Sony Japan has introduced an unusual new product that combines a large wireless speaker with an atypical television remote control. The device enables users to listen to the television content no matter where they’re located in the house; the built-in controls eliminate the need to carry around the remote alongside the speaker. The device would be particularly useful for the … Continue reading
Google has been clamping down on Android apps that abuse permissions, and that appears to have had a very tangible effect on the Play Store. As part of a larger piece explaining how Google continues to fight “bad apps,” the company revealed that the…

Last year Apple launched the AirPods Pro. These are a pair of upgraded AirPods where it features active noise cancellation and also better sound quality. Now according to a new report from DigiTimes, it seems that Apple could be working on a new pair of earbuds in the form of the AirPods Pro Lite.
Unfortunately, apart from reporting that such a device exists, not much else is known about it as the report does not provide any details. However, generally speaking the term “Lite” suggests a cheaper model, but as MacRumors notes, the price difference between the wireless case version of the AirPods and AirPods Pro is only $50, it is unclear where the AirPods Pro might fit in the lineup.
There have been some rumors that have Apple could announce a new version of the AirPods this year, so it is possible that maybe the AirPods Pro Lite could be in reference to that particular model. However, we should note that DigiTimes doesn’t always have the best track record when it comes to Apple related rumors, so it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt for now.
Apple is also rumored to host an event in March where the company could announce new products like the iPhone SE 2, so maybe more details about these AirPod Pro Lite earbuds could be revealed then.

When Essential was first announced, there was a lot of hype and expectations surrounding the company’s product, the Essential Phone. This is due to the fact that Andy Rubin is behind Essential, where his experience with the Sidekick and also being the father of Android led to quite high expectations.
Unfortunately, the phone failed to live up to the hype, but Essential did tease that they would be working on something different in the form of a device known as Gem. However, it seems that if you were hoping to maybe get your hands on Gem one day, that will no longer be possible as Essential has announced that they will be ceasing their operations and shutting down.
According to a statement made on the company’s website, “Our vision was to invent a mobile computing paradigm that more seamlessly integrated with people’s lifestyle needs. Despite our best efforts, we’ve now taken Gem as far as we can and regrettably have no clear path to deliver it to customers. Given this, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations and shutdown Essential.”
It is rather sad to see Essential go, but to be fair, following the company’s release of the Essential Phone, we haven’t really seen anything else from them since. Also, given how competitive the market is, we’re not sure sitting by the sidelines for a couple of years did them any favors.

For the past couple of years, Sony announced that they would not be attending E3, which is arguably one of the biggest events of the year for all things gaming related. However, it seems that to fill the void left by Sony, Nintendo has recently confirmed that they will be in attendance at E3 2020 this year.
The ESA (the organizers of the event) recently published a press release in which it confirmed that Nintendo will be one of the attendees this year. “Several leading video game companies have already committed to participating in E3 2020, including Xbox, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Bethesda Softworks, SEGA, Capcom, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive Software, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc., and Warner Bros. Games, among others.”
However, this shouldn’t really have come as a surprise as earlier this year, Nintendo’s President of America Doug Bowser actually confirmed with The Hollywood Reporter that they are planning to attend the event this year. “We look forward to participating in E3 2020. It is one of many ideal venues for us this year to interact with people in a social and immersive environment. Every year, we base our approach to E3 on the content we have to share.”
It is unclear as to what new games or hardware Nintendo has planned for the event, so we will just have to wait and see.

Back in 2018, Microsoft announced that they would be dipping their toes into the game streaming market with an upcoming service known as Project xCloud. This is where users can stream Xbox games onto pretty much any device. The service was later launched in preview where gamers on Android could participate in it.
If you do not own an Android device but would love to check out xCloud, you’re in luck because Microsoft has since announced that they will be extending its streaming service to iOS devices, like the iPhone and iPad, where gamers can participate in it through Apple’s TestFlight platform which is for apps that are in beta.
However, there is some bad news because due to the limitations of Apple’s TestFlight program, the preview will only be limited to 10,000 testers. We imagine that this will be far less than the number of people who want to take the service for a spin, but Microsoft does plan to rotate the beta testers, meaning that eventually some testers will be booted out of the program to make room for new ones.
According to Microsoft, “As noted earlier, there are limited spaces available, so for testing purposes we may need to cycle through registrants in order to best utilize the available testing audience. This also means that even if you miss out on the initial allocation, you might receive an invitation to participate later in the preview.” For those who are interested, you can sign up to participate here, but you might want to hurry as spaces are limited.

Apple Pay can be used to make online purchases. It can also be used to make offline purchases at stores where users simply tap their iPhones or Apple Watches at compatible POS terminals. However, what if a retailer or restaurant does not have those terminals installed? Now there is a new way of paying.
POS service provider Clover has recently announced a new feature called Scan to Pay where smaller retailers can simply include a QR code on its receipts where upon scanning, Apple Pay users will be redirected to a website where they can then make their payment using the service.
According to Clover, “Developed to expedite the payments experience in response to consumers’ increasing expectations for speed and convenience, Scan to Pay helps eliminate inefficiencies within the traditional full-service restaurant payment process by allowing a guest to pay a bill and tip within seconds using their iPhone and Apple Pay.”
This method is similar to how iPhone users scan QR codes where they can then be taken to a product or company’s website, except that in this instance, they can make payments through this method as well. Clover claims that this method will be faster and also potentially more secure, as payments made through Apple Pay require users to authenticate themselves through Face ID or Touch ID.

galaxy home miniAccording to the rumors and reports, Samsung was expected to officially announce the availability of the Galaxy Home Mini smart speaker at its Unpacked event. That did not happen, but it seems that the speaker is actually now available, although not exactly in the way that many of us imagined.
In a report from TizenHelp, it has been discovered that over in Korea, Samsung has officially released the Galaxy Home Mini, but it seems that it will only be available if you were to pre-order the recently-announced Galaxy S20 smartphone. This offer will be valid until the 26th of February, although it does not mention if it will be available for purchase after that.
For those who are unfamiliar, the Galaxy Home Mini is essentially a smaller version of the Bixby-powered Galaxy Home. It follows in the footsteps of devices like the Amazon Echo Dot and the Google Nest Mini where it is targeting users who don’t necessarily need a smart speaker, but want the smarts of a digital assistant baked into one.
The smaller footprint also means that it should be more convenient to place around the house, while also being more affordable. The device was initially launched back in 2019 where it was was available as a beta for those living in Korea. There is still no word on wider availability, but hopefully Samsung will have more details soon.
