2022’s iPhone Could Come With A Periscope Lens

This year’s iPhones have yet to launch, but it seems that there are already some rumors and predictions as to what kind of features the 2022 iPhone could be packing. This is according to a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that at least one of 2022’s iPhone models could feature a periscope lens.

What this means is that in the future, Apple could have an iPhone that will feature a pretty impressive optical zoom, similar to Huawei’s 5x zoom. For those wondering, there is a difference between digital and optical zoom. With digital, it is essentially cropping the photo to zoom in on the subject.

However, with optical zoom, it uses the lens to actually zoom into the subject, which in theory should result in better quality images as the details will not be lost as the lens zooms into the subject. At the moment, Apple’s iPhones are only capable of 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom, so this will be quite a marked improvement.

We’re not sure why Apple is waiting so long to introduce the feature, especially since it has been available on Android phones since last year already, but we suppose better late than never. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but if an iPhone with 5x optical zoom is something you might be interested in, it looks like you’ll be in for a wait.

Loss Of Sense Of Smell And Taste Could Be A Symptom Of COVID-19

Some of the symptoms that might indicate a person has contracted the COVID-19 virus is a fever, a persistent dry cough, and shortness of breath. Those aren’t particularly specific and could also be potentially related to other illnesses. This means that sometimes when a patient comes in with a fever, it can be difficult to determine if doctors should use a COVID-19 test kit on them.

However, it seems that doctors have recently identified another potential symptom that could help with the screening process. According to doctors, they are now calling for a loss of sense of smell and/or taste to be added to the list of screening tools for the COVID-19 virus. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has published on its website claiming that there is anecdotal evidence that suggests that anosmia and dysgeusia could be potential signs.

The academy writes, “Anosmia, in particular, has been seen in patients ultimately testing positive for the coronavirus with no other symptoms.” They add, “Anosmia, hyposmia, and dysgeusia in the absence of other respiratory disease such as allergic rhinitis, acute rhinosinusitis, or chronic rhinosinusitis should alert physicians to the possibility of COVID-19 infection and warrant serious consideration for self-isolation and testing of these individuals.”

This decision doesn’t come as a complete surprise, especially given that in the past, a sudden loss of smell has been associated with certain respiratory infections.

It’s 2020 And The World’s First Digital Watch Is Making A Comeback

These days when we look at watches, there are some that are digital, some that are analog, but way back in the day, analog was pretty much the only way to go. However, back in 1972, a company by the name of Hamilton launched the world’s first electronic watch with a digital display that used LEDs.

Now fast forward nearly 50 years later, it looks like the company is planning on revisiting its original release by announcing that they are planning on relaunching the world’s first digital watch. Dubbed the Pulsar P2 2900, the watch first made an appearance in James Bond’s Live and Let Die.

Given that it was brand new bleeding edge technology back then, the watch was sold for $2,100, which apparently translates to about $13,000 today based on inflation. The watch will be relaunched as the PSR where it will be much cheaper where it will sell for $750 for the steel version, and just under $1,000 for the gold version, which will be limited to 1,970 pieces.

As for functionality, don’t expect anything fancy. It is simply just a digital watch that shows the time and nothing more. There are no notifications, no activity tracking, no heart rate monitors, but if you’re a watch aficionado and don’t want to spend a lot of money acquiring the original, then this could be worth checking out.

The Coronavirus Might Be Capable Of Surviving On Surfaces Longer Than We Thought

With the spread of the coronavirus, there are some concerns that some are having regarding the lifespan of the virus on surfaces. This is because who’s to say that the package you ordered online won’t have the virus on the surface of the package? Or what about the containers that your takeaway meals are stored in?

Previously it was suggested that the virus could survive for anywhere between hours or days, depending on the type of surface it is left on, but now according to new data published by the CDC, it appears that the coronavirus could have a much longer lifespan than we had previously thought.

According to the CDC, they have found that the coronavirus could potentially survive on surfaces for as long as 17 days, if not longer. This is based on what they had found on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, where a bunch of passengers were initially quarantined before they were allowed off.

The study showed that even after passengers had left the ship, the virus continued to remain on surfaces well after what was previously thought to be the lifespan of the virus. Researchers had previously estimated that the virus could last as long as 3 days on surfaces made from steel or plastic, although the amount would decrease over time.

So what does this mean for us? Basically this means that we probably shouldn’t assume that our packages are clean, and that maybe giving them a wipe down might be a good idea, along with thoroughly washing our hands after handling them.

People Are Finding Creative Ways Of Skipping Zoom Meetings By Using Looping Videos

With more people working from home these days, it seems that Zoom has seen a sudden surge in popularity. For those who are unfamiliar, Zoom is an app that allows people to hold video conferences together, and what makes it different from other apps is that it has a feature that lets the host know if the user has navigated away from the active Zoom window for more than 30 seconds.

This means that during meetings or online classes, if you think you can switch apps while the other person talks, the app will tell on you. However, it seems that some Zoom users have gotten pretty creative with how they are beating the app’s feature, where some have created looping videos to make it look like they’re paying attention, while others have created a custom background which features their still image.

https://thenextweb.com/corona/2020/03/23/adapt-evolve-overcome/

What this allows is that as far as the host is concerned, they think you’re still in the meeting, but you could be off doing something else like lying down on your bed, playing games, eating, and so on. It is actually pretty hilarious, although it should be noted that creating a custom Zoom background is a paid feature that costs $500 a year as it is part of the Zoom Rooms subscription.

However, there is a chance that if you’re using Zoom for work or school, your company or your school might have already paid for it. If not, then we guess you’d be out of luck.

BMW Could Be The First To Support iOS ‘CarKey’ Feature

bmw armoredAccording to a report from last month, it was discovered within the code of iOS that Apple seems to be toying with the idea of allowing users to use their iPhones as car keys to unlock their car doors. This isn’t that much of a stretch, especially given that modern cars these days sometimes use key fobs instead of regular keys.

However, since Apple doesn’t make their own cars, obviously this feature would need to be adopted by a carmaker, but the question is who will be the one to adopt it? According to a report from 9to5Mac, it seems that new evidence discovered within iOS 14 has suggested that BMW will be the first to adopt the feature in their cars.

When 9to5Mac reached out to BMW for a comment, the company did not deny or confirm their findings, but instead directed them to a press release published in December. According to the press release, “The BMW Group took a leading role in the seamless integration of smart devices and the customers’ digital ecosystem in the early stages. Providing customers with simple, connected and ‘keyless’ access to their vehicles has been a key area of innovation.”

Basically it sounds like the company has already been working on such a system, so maybe it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch for them to adopt Apple’s CarKey system, although whether or not they will remains to be seen.

Nikon To Temporarily Suspend Camera Repair Services

If you have a Nikon camera that is in need of repair, it seems that you might have to wait a while before you can actually send it in, at least officially. This is because according to an announcement by Nikon USA, they have announced that due to the coronavirus outbreak, they will be temporarily suspending their camera repair services.

The company’s president and CEO Bo Kajiwara has also since issued a letter which reads, “We are all experiencing unprecedented circumstances around the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the virus. Nikon’s top priority is the health and safety of our customers, employees and the communities we serve.”

He adds, “Nikon Inc. has taken steps to ensure the safety of its employees by instituting office closings and remote work strategies in line with state and federal government mandates. These include the temporary closure of our repair service centers to prioritize the safety of our workforce and help limit the spread of the virus.”

Nikon’s decision doesn’t come as a surprise, as Apple themselves have also shut their physical stores temporarily due to the virus outbreak. As such, they too are no longer accepting device repairs, and customers who did not collect their devices in time will have to wait until the stores reopen before they can collect them.

2020’s iPad Pros Found To Have Only Marginal Gains Over 2018’s iPad Pros

Apple recently launched their 2020 iPad Pros which came with a brand new A12Z chipset, improved GPUs, and more RAM. Given that the last time the iPad Pro was refreshed was back in 2018, we expected that the new models should prove to be a lot better than its predecessors, but that might not necessarily be the case.

According to early benchmarks, it seems that the gains in the 2020 iPad Pros over the 2018 models might be marginal at best. For example on the Geekbench 5 test, the 11-inch model had a single-core score of 1114 and a multi-core score of 4654. This is versus its predecessor which scored 1113 and 4608 respectively.

In a way, this shouldn’t be surprising given that the A12Z chipset is more or less the same as the A12X with its 8-cores that are clocked at 2.48GHz, so in reality, it shouldn’t be too different. The main difference is in the GPU department, where the new iPad Pros have an 8-core GPU versus the 7-core GPU in the 2018 models..

Given the somewhat modest gains, this does seem to lend credence to the rumors that Apple could be planning another iPad Pro launch later this year, where it will be a higher-end model which will use mini LEDs. That being said, this does not mean that the 2020 models are bad, it’s just that if you were hoping for a major shakeup in terms of hardware, this might not necessarily be it.

Apple Just Made A Bunch Of E-Books And Audiobooks Free

Most of us are stuck at home these days to practice social distancing, which is the act of isolating ourselves at home to help slow down the spread of the coronavirus, and also providing some relief to healthcare workers. This means that instead of finding entertainment outdoors, we need to start finding ways to entertain ourselves at home.

The good news is that if you’re an Apple user, you might be pleased to learn that the company has announced that they will be making a bunch of e-books and audiobooks free to those living in the US. These books and audiobooks will be available via Apple Books for a limited time, so you might want to check it out if you’re looking to get some reading done.

At the moment, this offer seems to be only available for those living in the US, so if you’re living outside of the US, you’d be out of luck. We imagine that this could be a licensing issue which is why not all countries will be able to benefit from this freebie, but there are plenty of alternative forms of entertainment out there.

For example, movie studios are now choosing to release their movies digitally earlier than normal. This is because as people are being advised to stay home, there are less people going to the cinemas. As such, studios are no doubt hoping that by releasing their movies digitally earlier, they will be able to recoup those lost ticket sales.

Galaxy M51 renders reveal a familiar face

Remember the Galaxy S10 Lite? Yeah, that odd “in-between” smartphone that prefigured part of the new design that Samsung would adopt in the Galaxy S20. Apparently, Samsung thinks that design is a winner, at least for a mid-range market. That may or may not be the reason it is bringing that exact same appearance to what is believed to be … Continue reading
