New MacBook Air Models Launched With Updated Scissor Switch Keyboards

One of the biggest complaints about Apple’s MacBook laptops in recent years was its keyboard. Several years ago, Apple tried to introduce a new butterfly switch keyboard to its laptops, but unfortunately it proved to be more trouble than it was worth. It was only in 2019 that Apple finally did away with the butterfly keyboard and replaced it with a scissor switch mechanism.

For those who don’t want or can’t afford to buy Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro, the good news is that Apple is slowly introducing the new keyboard to its other MacBooks, and it looks like the MacBook Air will be the first non-Pro laptop to be on the receiving end of the new keyboard as Apple has officially updated the MacBook Air lineup.

Aside from the introduction of the new scissor switch keyboard, Apple has updated them with 10th-generation Intel Core processors up to 1.2GHz quad-core Core i7 with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.8GHz, along with Intel Iris Plus Graphics that the company claims will offer up to 80% faster graphics performance, making the MacBook Airs better at playing games and editing videos.

Apple has also doubled the storage on the new MacBook Airs, where the base model will now come with 256GB of storage with support for up to 2TB. There is also a built-in T2 security chip, a new three-mic array, and also support for a 6K external display, which is a first for the MacBook Air.

The company has also lowered the price of the new laptops where the base model will start at $999 (down from $1,099), and $899 for education users. The new MacBook Airs are currently available for purchase via Apple’s website.

Apple Launches Brand New iPad Pro Models With LiDAR Scanner

According to the rumors, it has been suggested that at least some of Apple’s 2020 iPhones could come with a “world facing” 3D camera. This is said to help improve on the iPhone’s augmented reality capabilities by introducing a camera that is more accurate at sensing its environment.

It looks like those rumors could be true because Apple has announced its latest iPad Pro models that come with a built-in LiDAR scanner, a hardware feature that can be found in self-driving cars.

Apple claims, “The LiDAR Scanner measures the distance to surrounding objects up to 5 meters away, works both indoors and outdoors, and operates at the photon level at nano-second speeds. New depth frameworks in iPadOS combine depth points measured by the LiDAR Scanner, data from both cameras and motion sensors, and is enhanced by computer vision algorithms on the A12Z Bionic for a more detailed understanding of a scene.”

These iPad Pro models are a refresh to the previous-gen models and interestingly enough, instead of packing an A13X chipset that we typically see in iPads, Apple has given the new tablets an A12Z chipset, which presumably is based off the A12 chipsets found in 2018’s iPhones. They will also sport 6GB of RAM and the new U1 chipset introduced in 2019’s iPhone 11 models.

According to Apple, the A12Z will boast an 8-core GPU, enhanced thermal architecture and performance controllers, making it a powerful chipset that will support things like 4K video editing and 3D modelling on the go. There is also support for WiFi 6, and as for the cameras, Apple has given the tablet a dual camera setup in the form of a 12MP Wide camera and a 10MP Ultra Wide camera.

In terms of pricing and availability, the new 11-inch iPad Pro will be priced starting at $799, while the 12.9-inch model will retail for $999, and both models are already available for order via Apple’s website.

Apple’s New iPad Pro Smart Keyboard Comes With A Built-In Trackpad

If there is one criticism to be made about the Smart Keyboard accessory for the iPad Pro, it would be that it’s not particularly pleasant to type on (although much better compared to using an on-screen keyboard). For those looking to make the iPad Pro a potential laptop replacement, it looks like that reality is here.

Alongside the new iPad Pro models, Apple has also announced an update and change to the Smart Keyboard accessory, where as you can see in the image above, it has been redesigned with a set of new keys and also the inclusion of a trackpad, which is a feature that we had previously heard about.

Based on its design, it looks a lot like the keys Apple uses with its MacBook laptops as it offers backlit keys and it also appears to be using the same scissor switch mechanism that Apple introduced to its 16-inch MacBook Pro last year. This should make for a much more pleasant typing experience. There is also a built-in USB-C port that allows for pass-through charging, and also a hinge that allows for adjustments up to 130-degrees.

This makes it more adjustable compared to the previous model that only supports two different positions, although at certain angles, it will make the tablet “float”. That being said, the new Smart Keyboard will not come cheap. The model that supports the 11-inch iPad Pro will now cost $299 (up from $179), while the 12.9-inch version will cost $349 (up from $199), both of which are expected to go on sale this coming May.
