Steam Records Record-Breaking 20 Million Concurrent Players

We all spend our time differently on the weekends. Some of us choose to spend it with friends and family at gatherings, some of us go to watch movies, some of us go for a run or a bike ride, and so on. However, with the coronavirus outbreak, it has been strongly recommended that we all practice social distancing and to stay at home where possible.

This is done to reduce the risk of us coming into contact with anyone who might have the virus, thus preventing a further outbreak. It seems that many people are taking this advice to heart because over the weekend, Valve’s Steam gaming platform managed to record a record-breaking 20 million concurrent players.

This means that at its peak, Steam had 20 million players playing games on its platform at that given point in time. That being said, it should be noted that this is for gamers around the world, and 20 million is but a drop in a bucket compared to the number of people around the world. However, the timing of this and the coronavirus outbreak suggests that it is more than mere coincidence.

We’re not sure if this number will rise, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it did. Companies such as Niantic, the developer behind Pokemon GO, has also made some changes to help players enjoy the game without having to leave their home.

Google Confirms They Are Developing A Coronavirus Information Website

Several days ago, US President Donald Trump seemingly misspoke when he said that Google was developing a website that would provide information about the coronavirus, such as by listing information on how to get screened/tested, and so on. However, Verily (a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet) clarified that it is them who will be developing such a website.

Now it looks like there might have been some truth to Trump’s claims as Google has since come forward and confirmed that they too, will be developing such a website. According to Google, “We’re partnering with the U.S. government in developing a website dedicated to COVID-19 education, prevention, and local resources nationwide. This includes best practices on prevention, links to authoritative information from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and helpful tips and tools from Google for individuals, teachers and businesses.”

Google also notes that they will be putting this information into its other services such as Google Search, Google Maps, and YouTube. “On YouTube, we’re using the homepage to direct users to videos from the CDC or other locally relevant public health agencies. We’re highlighting content from authoritative sources when people search for COVID-19, and inserting information panels to provide additional context from high-quality sources.”

The company also claims that this is done in an effort to help curb misinformation, especially given how many people rely on Google to search for news and information in general.

Apple To Expedite The Approval Of Credible Coronavirus Related Apps

The coronavirus outbreak is causing a lot of problems for everyone around the world, and as such, many are constantly searching for information about it. Unfortunately, the spike in demand for information has resulted in many unscrupulous developers creating coronavirus apps in a bid to capitalize on it.

Thankfully, companies have been quick to remove such apps from their stores in a bid to curb misinformation, and it looks like Apple is actually working to counter such bad apps by speeding up the process of reviewing credible apps for the coronavirus.

According to Apple, “To help fulfill these expectations, we’re evaluating apps critically to ensure data sources are reputable and that developers presenting these apps are from recognized entities such as government organizations, health-focused NGOs, companies deeply credentialed in health issues, and medical or educational institutions.”

The company adds, “Only developers from one of these recognized entities should submit an app related to COVID-19. Entertainment or game apps with COVID-19 as their theme will not be allowed.” Apple is also telling these developers to select the “Time-Sensitive Event” on the expedite request form, otherwise it could take longer for their apps to be reviewed and approved.

Other companies are also working to fight against misinformation about the outbreak, such as Google, who recently confirmed that they are developing a website designed to provide users with information about the coronavirus.
