Apple’s WWDC 2020 Will Be Adopting A New Online Format

So it was previously reported that due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, Apple could be considering cancelling its annual WWDC event. It turns out that the company has done that, sort of, where instead of hosting a physical event like they always do, they will instead be launching a new online format.

According to Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, “The current health situation has required that we create a new WWDC 2020 format that delivers a full program with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world. We will be sharing all of the details in the weeks ahead.”

WWDC’s keynote has always been available both online and in-person, although the workshops that developers attend have pretty much been physical-only. However, with this new online format, Apple is hoping to offer up what they normally offer during WWDC, except that it will allow developers to access it from the safety and comfort of their home.

Apple is not the only company to cancel its plans for its physical event. Google has also cancelled its physical I/O event, and following the cancellation of E3 2020, Microsoft has also announced an online Xbox event.

US Carriers To Suspend Cancellations And Waive Late Fees

If you’re late to pay your phone bills, don’t be surprised if you get hit with a late fee, or in some cases if you’ve not paid for an extended period of time, your account could get suspended or even cancelled. However, that will no longer be the case, at least for the time-being where US carriers have announced that they will be suspending those penalties.

This is in response to the coronavirus outbreak which has forced many companies to temporarily halt their operations, and where staff have been sent home. Also, due to the disruptions to businesses, we imagine that there will be some people who might not be able to make ends meet, which includes paying their bills on time.

This initiative, dubbed the Keep Americans Connected Pledge, has seen about 70 or so companies take part in it. So far, it includes the four major US carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint. There are also internet service providers such as Comcast and Google Fiber.

According to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, “As the coronavirus outbreak spreads and causes a series of disruptions to the economic, educational, medical and civic life of our country, it is imperative that Americans stay connected. Broadband will enable them to communicate with their loved ones and doctors, telework, ensure their children can engage in remote learning, and — importantly — take part in the ‘social distancing’ that will be so critical to limiting the spread of this novel coronavirus.”

MacBook Air Refresh Could Arrive As Early As Next Week

Thinking about getting a new MacBook Air? If you are, you might want to hold off just a bit because according to a recent report from MacRumors, they have heard from a source that a refresh of the laptop could arrive as early as next week, so if you can hold off for at least one more week, it might be a good idea to do so.

At this point in time, it is unclear what kind of changes we can expect from the refresh. However, it would probably be a safe assumption that an update in processors is probably in the cards. Another potential change is that Apple could finally be introducing the new scissor switch keyboard in the MacBook Air, making it the second laptop in Apple’s lineup to receive the new switch that debuted in the 16-inch MacBook Pro last year.

As it stands, the current MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pros still use the older butterfly mechanism. While Apple did tout the lower profile of the butterfly switches, the way they were designed led to a lot of issues. The company did try to improve on the design over the years, before ultimately changing it and reverting back to the scissor switch design that can be found on older MacBook laptops.

Take this with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully there will be an official announcement next week, so be sure to check back with us then for more updates.
