Reporters Without Borders Has Launched A Virtual Library In Minecraft

In the past, we have seen how Minecraft can be used for all kinds of purposes, such as being used as an educational tool to teach children about technology, to being a hobbyist game where we’ve seen how some players have used Minecraft and its building tools to construct entire worlds.

Now it looks like the organization, Reporters Without Borders, have turned to the use of Minecraft as well where together in a partnership with BlockWorks, they have managed to create a virtual library within the game that contains works that have been censored by certain governments around the world.

By using a game like Minecraft, which is widely available, Reporters Without Borders will be giving access to all these uncensored works to people around the world, granting access to some who might not have been able to access it otherwise.

According to Christian Mihr, Managing Director Reporters Without Borders Germany, “In many countries around the world, there is no free access to information. Web- sites are blocked, independent newspapers are banned and the press is controlled by the state. Young people grow up without being able to form their own opinions. By using Minecraft, the world’s most popular computer game, as a medium, we give them access to independent information.“

For those who are interested in checking it out, you’ll be able to download the map via its website.

Future iMacs Could Come With A Built-In Projector

The trend we are seeing these days with computers is that people are either starting to adopt additional displays or buying a single ultrawide display. This can greatly improve on productivity as it allows more information to be displayed at once, so users can keep multiple apps and websites open while they work.

It looks like Apple could have an answer to that for its iMacs, which are all-in-one desktop systems. According to a recently-discovered patent found by AppleInsider, it seems that Apple has explored the idea of potentially adding projectors into the iMac, which in turn would allow the computer to digitally expand the display of the computer.

The patent’s description reads, “The rear housing wall may have a glass portion or other transparent structure through which projectors project images onto nearby surfaces and through which image sensors and other optical sensors receive light. The housing may be supported by a stand. An electrical component in the stand may interact with an electronic device on the stand. Wireless circuitry in an external item may wirelessly couple to wireless circuitry within the housing.”

As you can see in the diagram above, Apple envisions the projector to be capable of projecting images from the back of the computer onto a flat surface like a wall. It is a pretty clever idea, although given that this is a patent, there’s really no telling if Apple has plans to actually make it a reality.

iPhone 12 Might Come With A ‘World Facing’ 3D Camera

These days, it’s not uncommon to see smartphones come with time-of-flight cameras. Now it looks like according to a report from Fast Company, they have been tipped off by a source with knowledge that it looks like Apple will be introducing a new “world facing” 3D camera on at least one of its next-gen iPhones that will be launching this year.

According to Fast Company’s report, Apple has apparently been working on this for the past few years, and it is only this year that the company finally feels like it could be ready to be launched. The report does caution that Apple could still cancel their plans, but at least for now, the 3D camera has been included in the 2020 iPhone’s design.

This 3D camera will of a laser and a sensor and software that is designed to help it better sense the world through the lens. The laser will help measure the distance between the phone and objects in front of it, which in turn could help improve on augmented reality experiences and apps, where getting a better gauge of distance could help scale and overlay objects more precisely and realistically.

Apple has not made their love and interest in augmented reality a secret. In fact, there have been rumors suggesting that the company could actually be working on an augmented reality headset that might be announced later this year.
