Amazon Is Reportedly Mining Third-Party Seller Data To Create Its Own Products

As some of you might no doubt be aware, Amazon has its own lineup of Amazon-branded products under its AmazonBasics lineup. This ranges from all kinds of things like monitor arms, pouches to carry your cables, and so on. We imagine that Amazon has their own procedures on how they decide whether or not to make a product or enter a product category, but now we know at least one of those methods.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it appears that some Amazon employees and company executives have actually been mining third-party seller data. By using this information, it has reportedly helped them to create their products, as well as help them make decisions on whether or not they should enter a new product category.

This is done by studying the sales, marketing spending, and Amazon’s own share of sales to arrive at those decisions. It should be noted that Amazon has policies in place that forbid the company from using data from their sellers, but the report claims that employees and executives would find workarounds, such as by asking analysts to create reports or aggregating data.

Amazon has since respond to the report by reiterating that they “strictly prohibit” workers from using seller information to design Amazon-branded products, and that they have since launched an internal investigation into the matter.

New Messages Bug Can Cause iPhones And iPads To Crash

Apple’s Messages app is supposed to be a simple app designed to send and receive messages. However, over the years, there have been numerous bugs discovered that would cause the app or device to crash when messages containing a string of weird characters are being received.

You would think that this is an issue that Apple would have patched ages ago, but fast forward to 2020, and it looks like the problem has resurfaced again. According to a post on Reddit, it seems that sending a string of characters containing the Italian flag emoji and characters in the Sindhi language can cause the iPhone or iPad that receives the message to crash.

To make matters worse, it looks like this bug isn’t just isolated to the Messages app, but it also affects other apps that can receive messages. This includes the Mail app (which is currently facing its own security issues) and other messaging apps. At the moment there is no way to prevent these characters from causing iOS devices to crash, and in some instances, a device needs to be restored in DFU mode to fix it.

The good news is that according to MacRumors, they received a tip from one of their readers, Adam, who claims that the second beta of the upcoming iOS 13.4.5 update seems to have fixed it, although when exactly that update will be coming remains to be seen.

Third-Gen AirPods Might Only Launch In 2021

Earlier this week, a tweet by Jon Prosser of FrontpageTech suggested that Apple could be launching a new pair of AirPods next week. However, well-connected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo doesn’t seem to think so, and in a new investor’s note, Kuo claims that Apple’s AirPods lineup might not be getting a refresh this year at all.

According to Kuo, he believes that Apple might only be launching their third-gen AirPods in 2021 where production of the earphones might only begin in the first half of the new year. He goes on to claim that the changes will be largely internal and that Apple will not be touching the design of the earphones at all.

We’re not sure what kind of changes there might be, so we’ll have to keep an eye out for it. As for the second-gen AirPods Pro, that device might come even later, where production could begin in the fourth quarter of 2021 or early 2022, meaning that would-be customers could be in for quite a wait.

Now what about the rumored AirPods X/AirPods Pro Lite? According to Kuo, he believes that some are getting confused by this and that this device is not an AirPods device, but rather a Beats-branded earphone. All of this is admittedly rather confusing as the reports seem to contradict each other, so it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt for now.
