Report: Amazon Uses Marketplace Seller Data to Make Its Own Competing Products

While Amazon faces antitrust scrutiny in the U.S. and EU, the company has consistently denied any allegations of wrongdoing. It’s been accused of things like changing algorithms to favor its own products to using seller data for its own profit. Amazon’s associate general counsel, Nate Sutton, told Congress in July…

FCC Opens 6GHz Spectrum To Allow For Faster WiFi Speeds

When it comes to determining the speed of your WiFi, there are many different factors that can affect it. For example signal strength is one of those factors, where the further you are away from the signal, the poorer the connection will be. There is also the number of users on your WiFi network, where the more people there are, the less bandwidth there is to go around.

Then of course there is also your internet package, where if you opted for a lower-end package, your speeds could also be slower. However, the FCC is hoping to eliminate at least one bottleneck and that comes in the form of an expansion of the spectrum, where the FCC has recently approved the expansion of WiFi to the 6GHz band.

What this means is that it will add as much as five times more bandwidth and should offer up to 2.5 times faster speeds with less interference from nearby devices. However, the downside is that similar to the 5GHz band, 6GHz will be a short-range expansion meaning that you will need to be relatively close to your router in order to take full advantage of it.

Previously, WiFi would rely on the longer-range 2.4GHz band and the shorter-range 5GHz band, but now with the FCC’s approval, companies now have permission to start making equipment that can take advantage of the 6GHz band which was previously only available for utilities and public safety.

12-Core ARM-Based MacBook Could Launch In 2021

Laptops powered by ARM-based processors aren’t new, but if you have been following the rumors, you might have heard that Apple could get in on the action by launching MacBooks powered by the company’s own ARM-based chipsets. Now according to a report from Bloomberg, they are reiterating those claims.

According to the report, Apple is set to launch such a laptop in 2021 where it will offer a 12-core ARM-based chipset built on the 5nm process. This chipset will consist of 8 high-performance cores combined with 4 “efficiency’ cores. To give you some context, Apple’s base MacBook comes with two cores, while higher-end models offer more cores depending on the configuration.

However, we should note that having more cores does not necessarily make a chipset better or more powerful as there are other things to consider. The report goes on to claim that Apple is trying to synchronize the architecture between their ARM chipsets and Intel chipsets, and are also working on ways to ensure that older apps built for Intel’s platform will continue to work on their ARM-based computers.

That being said, for those hoping for a high-end ARM MacBook in 2021, the report claims that Apple might only launch an entry-level device, and that ARM chipsets that can rival the higher-end Intel MacBook Pros and iMacs might not arrive until much later.

Facebook Still Has Plans To Put Ads In WhatsApp Eventually

Ever since Facebook was acquired by WhatsApp, many have been wondering how Facebook plans to monetize the otherwise free app. Given how much Facebook paid for the company, it is without doubt that they do plan on recouping those expenses. Last year there were plans to introduce ads, but earlier this year Facebook decided to ditch that idea.

However, according to a report from The Information (paywall), it claims that Facebook has not given up completely and still plan on eventually introducing ads. This was confirmed in a statement made to Engadget in which a Facebook spokesperson confirmed that ads are still a long-term opportunity for WhatsApp that they are still exploring.

The report goes on to claim that one of the reasons why Facebook ditched their plans earlier this year was because they wanted to avoid antagonizing regulators. Given Facebook’s somewhat bad reputation regarding user privacy, the company has come under intense scrutiny and ads would have definitely not helped their situation.

There were also internal concerns amongst company executives who were worried that introducing ads would result in users deleting their accounts. When exactly these ads will start being implemented remains to be seen, so expect that they will eventually show up one day.
