Woman’s Silicone Breast Implant Helps Deflect Bullet That Might Have Killed Her

Unless you’re wearing a bulletproof vest, there is a good chance that being shot directly at your chest could result in you being killed. However, in the past we have seen how sometimes lives have been saved where the bullet misses its mark, thanks to objects being placed in our front pockets.

In the case of a 30-year old woman, she had her life potentially saved when her breast implant seemingly deflected a bullet that would have otherwise killed her. The story was published to the SAGE medical journal last week, and it seems that this could very well be the first instance of a silicone breast implant saving a life.

The case actually took place back in 2018 where according to the report, the woman who was shot actually walked herself into her local emergency department after being shot in the chest. To the amazement of the doctors and nurses in attendance, the woman seemed to be fine and was talking despite taking a bullet to the chest.

It seems that due to her silicone breast implant, the bullet was deflected away from her vital organs. While she did sustain injuries from the bullet entry point which resulted in a fractured rib, she was otherwise fine and made a full recovery.

Speaking to CNN, Dr. Giancarlo McEvenue said, “The bullet wound entry was on the left breast, but the rib fracture was on the right side. The bullet entered the skin on the left side first, and then ricocheted across her sternum into the right breast and broke her rib on the right side. The implant caused the change in the trajectory of the bullet.”

McEvenue adds, “On the left hand side is the heart and lungs — if the bullet would have gone into the chest, she would have had a much more serious, possibly life-threatening injury.”

Latest WhatsApp Beta Increases Group Video Call Participants To Eight

While video conferencing app Zoom started out as the darling of the coronavirus outbreak due to its relative ease of use and the ability to support as many as 100 participants at a time, it quickly soured due to the numerous privacy and security issues that were discovered shortly after.

If you’re looking for alternatives, then an upcoming WhatsApp update could be worth checking out. According to a report from WABetaInfo, they have discovered that in the latest beta for WhatsApp, the company has increased the group video call size from four to eight participants at a time. This is ideal for smaller groups of people who are looking to chat with each other

Note that this is only in the beta version of the app, but presumably it shouldn’t be too long until the feature is rolled out for everyone else. Those who are taking part in the beta should be able to access it for now. Now obviously eight users compared to 100 users is a fraction, but like we said, if you’re uncomfortable with the way things are with Zoom right now and you don’t need that many participants, then this update is definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

There is no word on when WhatsApp will release this update, but we’ll be looking out for it.

Apple Exploring Car Windows That Can Dynamically Tint Based On The Time Of Day

Car windows can be tinted to help protect drivers from the glare of the sun, but also to protect their privacy. However, these tints are typically static, meaning that once they’re tinted, it’s pretty much set. This can be troublesome because at night, the tint will result in the interior of the car looking darker.

However, Apple wants to solve that issue through dynamic tinting. In a recently-discovered patent, it looks as though Apple is exploring the idea of creating windows that can tint and change its darkness and opacity depending on the time of day.  This means that the windows of the car can change according to the situation or according to the user.

It should be pointed out that Apple has tried to be as broad as possible in its patent filing where it seems that this patent wants to cover vehicles as well as buildings. The former of which is particularly interesting given that there have been long-standing rumors that Apple could be working on their own car, or at least car-related technologies.

According to the patent’s description, “Adjustable windows may have adjustable layers such as adjustable tint layers, adjustable reflectivity layers, and adjustable haze layers. Adjustable window layers may be incorporated into a window with one or more transparent structural layers such as a pair of glass window layers.” That being said, we have on idea if this is something Apple will actually implement, but it does sound like a pretty fantastic idea.

Some Arctic summers will likely be ice-free even with reduced CO2

A new study has warned that the Arctic is likely to be ice-free during the summer months due to climate change, something that would only be partially prevented if humanity rapidly reduces the amount of CO2 emissions. The loss of ice during the summer months would be, according to the team behind the study, devasting for the local ecosystem, including … Continue reading
