Thermal scanners aren’t anything new, and in the past we have seen how the tech has been deployed at places like airports to detect if people flying in have a fever. Now it looks like the technology is being used in wearables like smart glasses, and this is exactly what Chinese company Rokid is trying to sell to the US.
The company has reportedly pitched their product to several companies based in the US. The glasses, known as the T1, will come with an infrared scanner which can detect the temperatures of up to 200 people at once from a distance of up to 3 meters. This means that health officials can be deployed in the field to do a quick scan to see who has a fever, which is one of the symptoms of the COVID-19 virus.
The glasses are powered by a Qualcomm chipset and comes with a 12MP camera, augmented reality support, and the company is also offering IoT and software solutions to facilitate facial recognition. That being said, we should note that not having a fever doesn’t mean that the person does not have the COVID-19 virus.
A fever is simply one of the symptoms, but at the very least it could help officials weed out people who are visibly sick and maybe perform additional tests on them. The fact that it is a wearable means that it can be easily deployed and moved from one location to another, thus covering a wider space at once.

Space is a vast and open place that is still largely unexplored by humans due to the current limitations of our technology. In fact, we are probably in our infancy when it comes to understanding space and knowing what is out there, but it seems that we are taking steps to figure it out.
In fact, NASA has recently awarded additional funding to a variety of projects under its Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program, where one of the projects by JPL roboticist Saptarshi Bandyopadhyay seems to float the idea of building a telescope in the far side of the moon, or rather in one of the moon’s natural craters.
As you can see in the image above, it does look a bit like the Death Star from Star Wars, but it is in fact a telescope which Bandyopadhyay is calling the Lunar Crater Radio Telescope. This is an ultra-long-wavelength radio telescope that will be capable of capturing weaker signals traveling through space, thus allowing us to better observe the universe based on wavelengths that are further away and far away from the noise emitted by Earth’s ionosphere.
NASA has awarded this project $120,000 to move it forward, and should Bandyopadhyay come up with a convincing proposal, it will then move to the more advanced stages, which could potentially result in the telescope actually being built.

Before the new iPhone SE was announced, it was rumored that the handset could be largely based on the iPhone 8’s design. Sure enough, the rumors were true. However, it now also means that Apple has since discontinued the iPhone 8, meaning that if you wanted a cheap iPhone, the new iPhone SE is your best bet.
Apple has typically kept older iPhones around even when newer models have been announced. This is because while Apple doesn’t necessarily make “budget” phones, the older models are sold for less, making it an option for those who don’t have the money or see the need to purchase a high-end iPhone.
That being said, we suppose it actually makes sense that the iPhone 8 is discontinued. In fact, we’d probably go as far as to say that the new iPhone SE might be a better buy. This is because in terms of processor, it uses the A13 chipset found in last year’s flagship iPhones, meaning that it will be quite powerful.
It also utilizes smarter camera software to achieve the bokeh look from Portrait Mode despite having only one camera. It is also priced at $399 which makes it very affordable. Apple has been experiencing a fair bit of success in the recent years with the iPhone XR and the iPhone 11, both of which are positioned slightly cheaper than the flagship models. It will be interesting to see how this new iPhone SE will do at its price point.

People might take hard drives for granted these days. After all, their use of moving parts makes them less suited for mobile devices and their bulky sizes give off an “old school” vibe. Hard disks and their magnetic plates and moving read/write heads, however, still trump Flash NAND technology when it comes to capacity, which is why they are still … Continue reading
