Lenovo Launches New Legion Gaming Laptops

Lenovo just announced the Legion 7 (above image) and Legion 5i gaming laptops, both equipped with Intel’s 10th Gen H-Series CPU as the main, but not the only, CPU option. You can guess which is more powerful based on name, and it’s a significant update for Lenovo, so let’s take a closer look.

Legion 7

Key specifications

Lenovo Legion 7 ($1,599.99+)
GPUGeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q
CPUIntel 10th Gen i9 H-Series
Display1080p 240Hz
Keyboard1.3mm travel
Battery80Wh, Rapid charge

With such specifications, the new Lenovo Legion 7 is poised to do very well in both benchmarks in real-world gaming. Lenovo mentioned that it had improved its cooling system, which bodes well for sustained performance but also well for higher comfort if you choose using this computer on your lap.

The 240Hz refresh rate is a very nice touch, especially since the 1080p resolution should allow many games to effectively hit that refresh rate. That’s probably not true for the newest and heaviest games, but many people still enjoy games with less demanding graphics or simply favor speed over details.

The Lenovo Legion 7 “TrueStrike Keyboard” features anti-ghosting and large arrow keys, which is a must for gamers, but also for programmers, I can vouch for it. We’re not sure how the new key switches feel, but on paper, they look exciting and should be more “tactile” than conventional laptop keyboards.

The overall look of the Legion 7 is clean and sleek, and if we ventured to guess, we would say that it has been designed to please both Gamers and Creatives, two of the most important markets for high-powered laptops.

The overall design and specifications is a smart way to address the (non-workstation) Creative market as we all know that gaming systems are some of the most potent options when it comes to video editing for example.

Legion 5

Legion 5i with 17-inch display

Key specifications

Lenovo Legion 5i ($829.99/15″ and $1129.99/17″)
GPUGeForce RTX 2060
CPUIntel 10th Gen H-Series
Display1080p 15-inch 240Hz or 17-inch 144Hz

Lenovo Legion 5 ($849.99)
GPUGeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics
CPUCPU AMD Ryzen 4000 H-Series
Display15-inch 120Hz

Legion 5 buyers can choose between Intel and AMD platforms, which is nice since AMD has done an outstanding job with its latest offering. On the Intel side, there’s no i9 version, but it’s not surprising since the price is a notch lower. The Legion 5i (i for Intel) is the more powerful version, while the AMD model is optimized for value.

Some games can use a massive number of CPU cores, and can benefit from all the computing prowess chips from both companies have to offer. The same is valid on the graphics front, with the GeForce RTX 2060, which is great, but not quite as powerful as the RTX 2080.

Overall, the Legion 5 is an excellent way for Lenovo to increase its gaming laptop footprint by offering a good option for customers who are looking for a more affordable system.

You Can Now Buy Logitech’s More Affordable iPad Magic Keyboard Alternative

Alongside the 2020 iPad Pro, Apple also announced a new Magic Keyboard accessory for the tablet. Unlike the previous Smart Keyboard, this keyboard offers a new scissor switch mechanism and more importantly, it comes with a trackpad! Unfortunately, it is expensive as it costs $299 for the base model for the 11-inch iPad Pro, and going up to $349 for the 12.9-inch model.

If you’d rather not spend that kind of money for a tablet keyboard, you’ll be pleased to learn that Logitech’s more affordable alternative keyboard is now available to purchase. For those who are unfamiliar, when Apple announced the new Magic Keyboard, Logitech also announced their own alternative in the form of the Logitech Combo Touch.

While it might not come with the same scissor switch keyboard mechanism as the Magic Keyboard, the fact that it is priced starting at $150 makes it a whole lot more attractive and affordable. It also comes with a built-in trackpad and there is also a slot that users can keep their Apple Pencil stylus in.

The best part is that unlike the Magic Keyboard, which is only compatible with the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro models, the Logitech Combo Touch will play nicely with the 7th-gen iPad, the 3rd-gen iPad Air, and also the newer iPad Pro models. If you’re interested in picking it up, you can actually purchase it from Apple’s website.

US Senator Raises Privacy Concerns Regarding Apple And Google’s COVID-19 Contact Tracing Feature

Recently, Apple and Google announced that they will be teaming up to create contact tracing features that can be integrated into iOS and Android. While this sounds like a great idea, US Senator Richard Blumenthal has raised some concerns about the feature, and suggested that Apple and Google will need to make an effort to convince the public that it will not result in a violation of their privacy.

In a statement made by the senator, Blumenthal was quoted as saying, “Apple and Google have a lot of work to do to convince a rightfully skeptical public that they are fully serious about the privacy and security of their contact tracing efforts. I urgently want to know how Apple and Google will assure that consumers’ privacy interests are strongly balanced with the legitimate needs of public health officials during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Recently, Apple and Google shared how the contact tracing will work. It will rely on Bluetooth that will transmit information between devices when they are in close proximity with each other. When one person gets sick, it will then send out a notification alert to other people they were in contact with to let them know.

There will be consent required through every step of the way, where the user who is sick needs to give their consent for their broadcast beacons to be sent to the cloud. The identifiers will also be rotated and stored locally, meaning that unless the user gives their consent, then only will those identifiers be uploaded to the cloud.

Apple and Google will not be developing the apps themselves, but rather the API which can then be used by third-party developers. We imagine that its effectiveness will only be as good as people are willing to consent, meaning that if no one consents to share their information, then this initiative would be useless.

Final Fantasy Funeral Procession Held For Gamer Who Died To The Coronavirus

Everyday, the coronavirus outbreak is claiming lives. To date, over 140,000 people have died as a result from being infected by it. This includes people from all walks of life, one of them being a Final Fantasy XIV gamer. To mourn the player’s death, players in Final Fantasy XIV have held a funeral procession in the game to honor that person.

Players gathered in the Zalera server to mourn the human player of a character named Ferne Le’roy, who recently passed away after being infected by the coronavirus. The players initially held a discussion on Reddit and ultimately decided to host the procession in the game where they were joined by other players from other servers, where it looked like hundreds were in attendance, all dressed in black garb as appropriate for a funeral.

The funeral procession took place in the Central Shroud area which involved 33 minutes of in-game walking, where it ended under the boughs of the Everscade, a holy site in the woods. This is actually not the first time that players have been honored in such a manner inside of video games.

Years ago, players in World of Warcraft also held a funeral for a player who had also passed away (not from the coronavirus). Developers have also held tributes in-game to fallen players, like in World of Warcraft where there was a questline designed to honor a player who had passed away from cancer.
