Researchers Test Effectiveness Of Century-Old Tuberculosis Vaccine Against The COVID-19 Virus

At the moment, there is no known vaccine that works against the COVID-19 virus. Researchers are working on several potential solutions, but there is nothing definitive yet. However, to help speed up the process, several scientists around the world are now exploring older vaccines to see if it can help.

The vaccine in question is known as the Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine and was introduced back in the 1920s to fight against tuberculosis. In fact, some countries in Asia such as Singapore and Malaysia had previously made it mandatory for newborns to receive the vaccine, and once again when children hit 12 years old.

The reason that researchers are exploring this particular vaccine is because unlike other vaccines that only protect against a particular disease, the BCG vaccine also helps boost the immune system in general. A study found that there were 50% lower mortality rates in children who received the vaccine compared to those who did not, which is a much bigger drop in deaths that can be explained by a reduction in tuberculosis cases.

However, whether or not the BCG vaccine will be able to work effectively against the COVID-19 virus remains to be seen. The researchers are saying that it will probably be months before they get the results back from the trial, so maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Facebook Messenger Desktop App Now Available On Windows And Mac

With all the heat that Zoom is facing these days over its privacy and security practices, if you’re uncomfortable using the company’s video conferencing services, we totally get it. If you’re after an alternative, it seems that Facebook Messenger could be worth checking out (although Facebook is no stranger to privacy controversies).

Facebook had launched it Messenger app for desktop back in March after announcing it at their F8 conference last year, but its availability was limited to a handful of countries. However, that has since changed as Facebook has since announced that its standalone Messenger app for desktop will now be available to all Windows and Mac users.

According to Facebook, “Now more than ever, people are using technology to stay in touch with the people they care about, even when physically apart. Over the past month, we saw more than a 100% increase in people using their desktop browser for audio and video calling on Messenger. Now with apps for MacOS and Windows, the best of Messenger is coming to desktop, including unlimited and free group video calls.”

The app pretty much does what the web version does, where it will support messaging and group video calls, although unlike Zoom, it is limited to a maximum of 8 participants. However, if you’d rather not keep your browser opened all the time, then this might be worth checking out. The app will be available for download via the Microsoft Store or the Mac App Store.

Potential Coronavirus Vaccine Produces Enough Antibodies To Fight Off The Virus

Right now the race is on to find a vaccine for the coronavirus outbreak that has impacted the world. Unfortunately, there is no known vaccine in the market yet, but there have been great efforts made by companies in which some potential vaccines have already been sent for human trials.

It looks like we might be able to add another to the list, thanks to the work of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine who have created a potential new effective vaccine against the virus. The vaccine that they created was tested on mice and based on their initial findings, it managed to produce enough antibodies in the host’s system to neutralize the virus within two weeks of injection.

According to Andrea Gambotto, associate professor of surgery at the Pittsburgh School of Medicine, “These two viruses, which are closely related to [Covid-19], teach us that a particular protein, called a spike protein, is important for inducing immunity against the virus. We knew exactly where to fight this new virus.”

The method of delivery involves a patch that is placed on the skin. The patch contains 400 tiny microneedles that can inject the vaccine into the skin where the immune reaction is the strongest. The patch is made using sugar and protein pieces and will eventually dissolve away. It is unclear how this will work on humans, but so far it appears to be promising as the researchers’ work have since been peer reviewed by other scientists outside of the university.
