GM Will Start Producing As Many As 50,000 Masks A Day

One of the things that the world is currently facing a shortage of is face masks. These are used not just by healthcare workers, but also the public in general to help protect themselves and others from the coronavirus. GM is hoping to solve the problem and lend a helping hand by announcing that they will start producing face masks.

The company has revealed that they are working with their partners around the world to help boost their manufacturing capacity. The company expects that they will be able to deliver 20,000 face masks on the 8th of April, but their goal is to be able to produce as many as 50,000 units a day.

According to Peter Thom, GM vice president, Global Manufacturing Engineering, “Our team began looking at ways we could quickly utilize our talents and resources to help in the shared fight against COVID-19. Working around the clock, our team rallied with incredible passion and focus to come up with a plan to produce masks that will help protect the women and men on the front lines of this crisis.”

GM is not alone in trying to use their manufacturing capabilities to help contribute to the fight against the coronavirus. Razer was one of the first few tech companies to announce that they too will be converting their production lines to help manufacture face masks as well. Others, such as Ford, will also be helping to manufacture medical equipment like ventilators and respirators.

Samsung To End LCD Panel Production By The End Of 2020

The world is starting to shift towards the use of LED display panels. This is because unlike LCD, LEDs are more energy efficient as they only light up the parts of the display that are needed, whereas LCD requires a backlight that lights up everything. This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise that Samsung will be winding down their operations for LCD display panels.

The company has announced that by the end of 2020, they will be ending its production of LCD panels. According to Samsung Display, they cite a falling demand for LCD panels as one of the reasons they’ll be ending their production. The company also states that they will continue to fulfill orders placed by customers and do not see an issue accomplishing this. “We will supply ordered LCDs to our customers by the end of this year without any issues.”

Samsung Display currently has two LCD production lines, one of which is in South Korea and the other in China. The company did previously state that they will be investing around $10.72 billion over the next five years into converting the South Korean LCD lines into a facility that will produce more advanced quantum dot screens, but they did not state what they plan to do with their operations in China.

Apple To Allow Some Employees To Work On Unannounced Products From Home

Apple is a company known for their secrecy when working on new products. We have heard stories of how employees are generally not allowed to take work home in a bid to help keep their operations as secretive as possible. However, with the coronavirus outbreak, many people are being forced to work on home.

Does this mean that all work on existing products stop? Obviously not, and according to a report from Bloomberg, it seems that Apple is putting its secrecy to the test by allowing select employees to work on unannounced projects from home. The report goes on to state that the process of taking work home has a long chain of command.

This involves a vice president signing off on this, along with a list of employees who are in possession of these projects. This list is said to be regularly reviewed by Apple’s most senior leadership to ensure that it doesn’t fall into the hands of someone who isn’t supposed to be working on it.

Assuming the company keeps to schedule, they are expected to launch a bunch of new products this year. This includes the iPhone 9, iPhone 12, potential MacBook Pro refreshes, a new iPad Pro with a mini LED display, and a new HomePod, just to name a few. Whether or not these products get leaked as a result of working from home remains to be seen.

Microsoft Takes On Grammarly With Its New ‘Editor’ Browser Extension

If you do a lot of writing, then Grammarly might be a software you have heard of. For those unfamiliar, Grammarly is a piece of software that can check your grammar as you write, identifying problematic sentences and so on. This is helpful regardless of whether or not English is your native language.

For the most part, Grammarly is more or less the dominant software when it comes to these features, but Microsoft is looking to challenge the app with their new software called Microsoft Editor.

According to Microsoft, “Many of us are working or attending school remotely, and with so much communication happening through writing it is more than important than ever that you communicate clearly. Microsoft Editor, an AI-powered service that enables you to write with confidence in 20+ languages, can help.”

Microsoft Editor will exist on multiple platforms, where it can be used in other Microsoft apps such as Word and Outlook. It will be capable of offering rewrite suggestions and also checks for similarity. Editor exists also as a browser extension. This means that if you use web-based word processing software, like Google Docs, Editor can also help in that regard.

If you are interested in the Microsoft Editor, Microsoft notes that the availability of Editor will be rolling out starting today, and it should be available to the masses by the end of April.

Apple’s iPhone 9 Could Be Announced In The Next Two Weeks

Recently, a photo showed that cases for Apple’s rumored iPhone 9 have started to show up at Best Buy’s stores. This seemed to indicate that the phone was close to being officially announced, and it looks like it could be true. This is according to Jon Prosser, founder of YouTube channel Front Page Tech.

According to Prosser, he claims that Apple will be officially launching the device on the 15th of April, about two weeks from now. In a way this makes sense because had Apple held their rumored end of March event, the phone would have most likely seen a release in April as well, so this date isn’t really that much of a stretch.

That being said, Prosser’s claim of a 15th of April launch is interesting. This is because it seems to contradict an earlier rumor that suggested that the phone could be launched on the 5th of April. Given that the 5th of April is a Sunday, it does seem odd that Apple would choose a weekend to launch a product.

The company has typically launched products during the week, where usually we see them released on Fridays. In any case, these are just rumors for now so do take it with a grain of salt, but check back with us in the coming days for more updates.
