Trump: Churches Are 'Essential' And Should Reopen Immediately Because I Said So

In his latest push to quickly reopen America despite all evidence suggesting that that’s a pretty dumb idea, President Donald Trump declared places of worship “essential” and called for reopenings nationwide this weekend, even as several areas remain under coronavirus lockdowns.

You Can Now Launch Video Calls In Instagram That Supports Up To 50 People

Making video calls on Instagram isn’t exactly a new function or feature, however in a recent update to the app, Instagram has announced that the video calling feature will now support as many as 50 people at a time. This is thanks to the integration of Messenger Rooms within the Instagram app.

For those who are unfamiliar, Facebook launched Messenger Rooms earlier this month. This is a new feature for Messenger that will support large groups of users looking to make video calls with each other. This is meant to take on the likes of platforms such as Zoom which has gained a lot of popularity in the recent months.

Both Facebook Messenger and Instagram already support video calls, but it was limited to a handful of participants. With Messenger Rooms, users will now be able to create large rooms for multiple participants to join at the same time. So by integrating it into Instagram, users will be able to create Messenger Rooms with their Instagram contacts.

Messenger Rooms is also expected to eventually get integrated into WhatsApp as well, so if you’re not an Instagram user, not to worry as you should also be able to create Messenger Rooms through WhatsApp, so do check it out if you are looking for alternative video calling apps to Zoom.

Facebook Messenger Will Now Start Warning Users About Scams And Impersonations

During the early days of social media, it was relatively easy to trust messages you received on these platforms. This is because back then, not many people used them and as such, there is a good chance that who you were talking to could be an actual person. These days, it’s not uncommon to get random messages or friend requests from complete strangers.

A lot of times, these are fake accounts designed to spread scams. In case it wasn’t already obvious, Facebook is now trying to do their part to warn users about these messages. Now whenever you receive a message from a stranger not part of your friend’s list on Facebook Messenger, you will get a warning that it could either be a scam or an impersonator.

For example when receiving a message from a stranger, Messenger will show you a warning that offers some advice, like refusing requests to send money. For instances where an account that has been created to look like someone you know, Messenger will also warn users that this account appears to be similar to someone you know and that the person you’re chatting with might not actually be your friend.

These tools don’t actually stop the scams or impersonations from happening, but hopefully the additional warnings will give people some pause before they give away personal information or send money to scammers.

Scientists Create A Cyborg Eye That’s Almost Like The Real Thing

The problem with a lot of prosthetics today is that they don’t 100% mimic human parts, although some really do come close. However, thanks to the work of scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, they have developed a cyborg eye that is said to be almost like the real thing.

Current visual prosthetic devices have their limitations, one of which is that it uses a flat object to sense images. This means that it doesn’t exactly conform to the human eye’s spherical shape, and as a result, its field of vision is narrower versus the human eye, which has around a 150-degree field of vision.

However, what the researchers have done is create an artificial eye that mimics the human eye. This particular design includes a lens to help focus light, along with a hemispherical retina. In the middle of the eye, they have filled it with a conductive fluid, similar to an actual human eye which is hollow in the middle and filled with vitreous humour.

The eye itself is made from porous aluminum oxide and filled with nanowires that are light-sensitive. This means that when there is light, it will activate and transmit electrical signals. Right now, the eye requires an external power source, but the researchers believes that given the use of the nanowires, it is possible that it could double up as a small solar cell and eventually make the eye self-sufficient in future iterations.

Google’s CEO Is Open To Working With Apple On Other Projects

As some of you might have heard, both Google and Apple had teamed up not too long ago to develop the Exposure Notification API. This API would allow developers to create contact tracing apps to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. This was actually a surprise announcement as both companies are typically seen as each other’s rivals.

That being said, the collaboration between both companies must have been a pretty good one because during an interview with WIRED, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai seemed rather open to the idea of collaborating with Apple again on future projects. When Pichai was asked whether or not this was a one-off collaboration, the CEO replied by saying, “Large companies working together in service of society is really good for the world. I am committed to finding other opportunities, and I had the same sense from Tim on this.”

Like we said, Apple and Google’s recent collaboration came as a bit of a surprise. While both companies have developed apps for use on the other’s platform, it felt like it was mostly done out of a necessity.

Pichai also shared how the who process started. “Both teams independently had started working on technology to support health agencies in their contact tracing work. Very quickly both sides realized that for this to work well it has to be available everywhere. So engineering teams across Android and iOS organically started reaching out. At some point, Tim and I decided to exchange notes and talk directly.”
