COVID-19 Contact Tracing App Found To Have Shared Data With Foursquare And Google

One of the selling points of Apple and Google’s Exposure Notification API is the emphasis on privacy, where both companies will be using anonymized data and explicit user consent. As a result, some governments are choosing not to use the Exposure Notification API due to the various restrictions Apple and Google put in place.

However, it’s starting to feel like those restrictions might actually be a good thing. This is because according to a recent finding of privacy software specialist Jumbo Privacy, they have discovered that North Dakota’s Care19 app was actually sharing user information with third-parties like Foursquare and (ironically enough) Google, despite the fact that their privacy policy states that user data will not be shared unless given explicit consent by the user, or if compelled under federal regulations.

According to ProudCrowd, the company that developed the Care19 app, they claim that Foursquare integration was a mistake that it will be fixed. The company also issued a statement that reads, “The Care19 application user interface clearly calls out the usage of Foursquare on our Nearby Places’ screen, per the terms of our Foursquare agreement.”

“However, our privacy policy does not currently explicitly mention this usage. We will be working with our state partners to be more explicit in our privacy policy. It is important to note that our agreement with Foursquare does not allow them to collect Care19 data or use it in any form, beyond simply determining nearby businesses and returning that to us.”

Microsoft Patents A Pair Of Headphones With A Built-In Fingerprint Reader

These days, we’re starting to see how more headphones are starting to feature touch-based controls, where users can swipe on the earcups to adjust volume, adjust playback, and in some cases, allow outside noise in. However, it seems that Microsoft is looking to take things further with fingerprint integration.

So why fingerprint integration, you ask? It seems that Microsoft envisions how these headphones can act as a controller of sorts for a computer. For example, you could pair it with a computer and then with the fingerprint reader, you can then use it to log on securely to your accounts by verifying yourself by tapping on the earcups.

It could also be used to help keep your audio private, where maybe you can protect things like voice calls, music, podcasts, and so on. In a way we can’t say that this is too much of a stretch of the imagination. With Microsoft’s Surface Headphones, the company has introduced Office integration, so for a future pair of Surface Headphones to pull double duty as a fingerprint reader actually makes sense.

Plus, it would also save Microsoft and other companies money by opting out of including fingerprint readers in their laptops or computers, thus giving users more options. That being said, this is only a patent so it’s hard to say if Microsoft plans on making it a reality, so don’t get your hopes up just yet about seeing it hit the shelves.

Fitbit Wants To See If Its Wearables Can Detect COVID-19

A couple of weeks ago, Fitbit launched a study in which they wanted to see if their wearables were capable of detecting irregular heart beats. Now it looks like the company wants to see if its wearables might actually be capable of doing more than that, such as being able to detect early on if the wearer might have the flu or even COVID-19.

According to the company, “Wearables, like Fitbit trackers and smartwatches, are currently being used in research studies from partners like the Scripps Research Translational Institute and the Stanford Medicine Healthcare Innovation Lab to see if wearable data can help detect the early onset of infectious diseases, like the flu and COVID-19, even before symptoms start.”

It is unclear how they might be able to do that since testing for COVID-19 requires a physical swab of the patient’s nose canal, but perhaps there could be data that could suggest that the user is sick and could be display symptoms (that can be gathered from a wearable) that could be related to the virus.

Fitbit is definitely not alone in this because back in March, an app called Cardiogram launched for the Apple Watch where it also attempts to try and detect if the wearer has the flu, and whether or not it could be a sign of a COVID-19 infection.
