Scientists create a cyborg eye that mimics the real thing

Scientists have been working on artificial eyes for years, but mimicking the shape and behavior of a real eye has been difficult. A breakthrough might just lead to a practical design, though. Researchers have created (via New Scientist) a cyborg eye…

Microsoft Patents A Dock That Can Keep Its Surface Laptops Cool

Due to the size of tablets and laptops, it is obvious that it will never be quite as efficient at cooling compared to a desktop computer that has ample room for larger fans and better airflow. However, Microsoft thinks they might be able to help with that and have patented what appears to be a cooling dock solution.

The patent was filed back in 2019 and was recently discovered by WindowsUnited after it had been published earlier last week. Now, the concept of cooling docks aren’t new. We have seen a variety of laptop stands with built-in fans in the past, but Microsoft’s system suggests a more hi-tech solution by relying on magnets to help keep the device in place.

In a way, by using magnets, it makes the laptop/tablet part of the actual dock, similar to how you might attach a keyboard accessory like the Surface Pro Type Cover. Also, unlike other cooling docks that simply have a fan attached to it, Microsoft’s patent suggests that there could be a heat sink built into the dock that will make it more efficient at dissipating the heat.

However, given that this is a patent, there’s no telling if Microsoft has plans to turn it into an actual product, so maybe don’t get your hopes up at seeing this hitting the shelves anytime soon.

Apple Wants To Build A 192 Room Hotel On Its Austin Campus

Apple has several campuses places around the US, but it seems that the company could be planning on expanding on some of them, or to be more specific, the company’s campus located in Northwest Austin. According to a report from Culture Map, it appears that Apple is apparently looking at introducing a 192-room hotel in its Austin campus.

Now before you get too excited at the prospect of staying in an Apple hotel, it seems that this hotel is more about providing a place for employees to stay if they were to travel to the Austin campus from another location. The hotel, which currently does not have a brand, will span 75,500 feet and will be six stories tall.

Apple had initially filed plans for the campus back in 2018, but those plans then did not include a hotel until more recently, the updated plans were approved in April last month. As it stands, none of Apple’s campuses have hotels built into them, so this would be a first. Like we said, chances are the hotel will be used to house employees who fly or drive in for work or training purposes.

It’s interesting that the company has chosen to put a hotel in its Austin campus instead of its headquarters, but who knows, perhaps that could change in the future.

Astronomers Might Have Witnessed The Birth Of A New Planet For The First Time Ever

How was the universe formed? That is a question that many are no doubt curious about. Do planets suddenly just pop into existence? Or were they always there? Now thanks to recent observations made with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, scientists might have a better idea.

In the observation they made, it seems that astronomers could have very well witnessed the birth of a new planet for the first time ever. The images captured by the telescope shows a swirling vortex of dust and gas around AB Aurigae, which is located 520 light years away from Earth in the Auriga constellation.

According to scientists, these types of spirals of dust and gas suggests that there is a baby planet present, which “kicks” the gas and causes a disturbance, thus the spirals of dust and gas. Right in the center of the spiral, there is a little “twist” in which scientists believe this is where the planet is being made.

The findings were published in a study in Astronomy & Astrophysics where according to co-author Anne Dutrey, “The twist is expected from some theoretical models of planet formation. It corresponds to the connection of two spirals  — one winding inwards of the planet’s orbit, the other expanding outwards — which join at the planet location. They allow gas and dust from the disc to accrete onto the forming planet and make it grow.”

OnePlus McLaren Editions are no more

Up until recently, OnePlus’ selection of smartphones per year has been more or less straightforward and simple. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t diverge from time to time to make special editions of those phones. Its most consistent special edition, however, has been its souped-up McLaren Editions since 2018. Now it seems that it will no longer be the case this … Continue reading
