Chinese Doctors Find A Potential COVID-19 Cure That Does Not Require A Vaccine

Right now the world is waiting on a vaccine to be developed to help fight against the COVID-19 virus once and for all. At the moment, doctors just have to treat the symptoms as they arise, meaning that the treatment for patients will differ depending on what kind of symptoms they are displaying.

However, over in China, it seems that doctors are claiming to have developed a drug in which they claim could cure the COVID-19 virus without needing a vaccine, similar to how you would take a pill for a fever, gastritis, and so on. How this drug works is similar in concept to how a vaccine would work, but it seems to be faster.

A vaccine works by injecting a patient with a weakened strain of the virus, in hopes that the body will be capable of producing antibodies to successfully fend it off, and teach it so that it knows how to counter the virus in the future. This particular method introduces antibodies directly into the patient’s system that already knows how to fight the virus, thus making the process faster.

However, we should caution you that before you get too excited, the researchers have only tested out this new method on animals, like mice. Whether or not it will work the same way in humans without negative side effects remains to be seen, but the early trials appear to be promising.

This Copper-Laced Jacket Could Help Prevent The Coronavirus From Spreading

Depending on the material of a surface, the coronavirus can live for hours or up to days. However, did you know that copper actually can kill viruses? In fact, back in the day, hospitals actually used copper for things like doorknobs to prevent bacteria and virus from spreading, and in 2015, researchers found that copper alloys used in hospital settings actually reduced infection rates by as much as 58%.

Now thanks to a clothing company by the name of Vollebak, they have developed a jacket called the Full Metal Jacket that weaves strands of copper into the fabric. This essentially turns the jacket into some kind bacteria/virus repellent, where if you were to wear it, it could help to prevent bacteria or viruses from adhering to your clothing and preventing you or other people around you from getting sick.

While this copper jacket might seem like a direct response to the coronavirus pandemic, Vollebak co-founder Steve Tidball revealed that the development of the jacket actually began about three years ago after watching a TED Talk by Bill Gates about pandemics. Each jacket contains 65% copper, which explains why it is so expensive.

The Full Metal Jacket is priced at $1,095 but before you get too excited at the prospect of buying it, it should be noted that it is unclear how effective it is in the real world. While it is true that copper does have antibacterial properties, whether or not this jacket is effective enough to prevent the spread of viruses and bacterias remains to be seen.

However, even if it does not work, Tidball believes that it could still be repurposed for hi-tech clothing. Given copper’s properties and use in electronics, this jacket could also help lay the foundation for smart clothing in the future, something that companies like Google have been working on.

A Court In Singapore Just Handed Down A Death Penalty Through Zoom

We’ve seen how video conferencing apps are gaining quite a bit of steam these days due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced many people to work and study from home. Meetings and classes are now being held through platforms such as Zoom, and over in Singapore, it seems that the courts have handed down what appears to be the world’s first death sentence through the app.

In case you’re unfamiliar with Singapore’s laws, the country basically has a zero tolerance policy regarding illegal drug use, especially trafficking. The case involved a Malaysian man who back in 2011, trafficked 28.5kg of heroin to Singapore before returning to Malaysia. He was later extradited in 2016 where he was found guilty, and just last Friday, the court sentenced him to death via a Zoom call with the High Court officials, the man in question, and his legal team.

While some might find it a bit callous to sentence a man to die via a Zoom call, a spokesperson for the Singapore Supreme Court said, “In line with measures to minimise the further spread of the COVID-19, the courts have been conducting hearings, including hearings on criminal matters remotely.”

It is also interesting to see the courts use Zoom, especially since back in April, the Singapore government had actually banned teachers from using Zoom after a series of “Zoombombings” which saw video conferences being interrupted by random strangers who shared obscene images.

Apple Might Not Bundle EarPods With The iPhone 12

Ever since Apple ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack, the company first bundled EarPods but included an adapter. The company later changed this by including EarPods with a Lightning connector, but now with the iPhone 12, a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the device could finally see Apple ditch the EarPods for good.

According to Kuo, it seems that there is a chance that the iPhone 12 might not ship with EarPods included in the box. The reason for this seems to be because Apple is hoping that by not including a pair of earphones, it could prompt customers to see out alternatives like the truly wireless AirPods.

What’s interesting about this rumor is that it seems to be the opposite of a rumor we heard back in 2019, where a report from DigiTimes suggested that Apple could actually be planning to include AirPods with its iPhones. We thought that was a bit of a stretch given that by bundling AirPods, Apple would be losing out on a lot of money they could have made by selling it separately.

That being said, you should take this with a grain of salt for now, but we imagine that there are probably some out there who might not be too thrilled about this as it means additional things they will need to buy.

OnePlus To Disable ‘X-ray’ Camera Feature Over Privacy Concerns

The other day we reported that it was discovered one of the features of the OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera is the ability for it to gain “X-ray vision” through one of the filters. This basically utilized the camera’s infrared sensors to create an effect, in which one of the side-effects was that it could see through very thin pieces of plastic and clothing.

We stated then that we weren’t sure if this was an intended feature of the filter, or if it was perhaps an unforeseen side-effect, but we have a feeling it might be the latter. This is because OnePlus has since announced that in an upcoming update, they will be disabling the feature for phones running HydrogenOS.

In case you’re unfamiliar, OnePlus has two versions of its operating system. There is OxygenOS which is used for OnePlus handsets all over the world, and HydrogenOS which is exclusive to China. The report claims that the feature will only be disabled for China, meaning that the rest of the world will still be able to continue using this feature.

OnePlus claims that this is due to privacy concerns. “While we think this camera gives users the ability to get more creative with smartphone photography, we also understand the concerns that have been raised. Therefore, we are already working on an OTA that we’ll push out in the coming weeks to offer the Photochrom filter while limiting other functionality that may be of concern.”

Windows 10 will soon be able to run Linux GUI apps directly

This is definitely not your grandfather’s Microsoft. Not too long ago, then-CEO Steve Ballmer called Linux a cancer. Today, Microsoft proclaims it loves Linux and open source, two things the company set out to destroy using whatever means necessary (and some argue it’s still doing behind the scenes). From the acquisition of GitHub to its Windows Subsystem for Linux, Microsoft … Continue reading
