Epic Shows Off Unreal Engine 5 Running On The PS5

These days, our video games are starting to look more realistic than ever, thanks to the advancements made in technology that has allowed game developers to push the envelope further. Now in a demo video shared on YouTube by the folks at Epic Games, they have shown off what Unreal Engine 5 looks like while running on Sony’s PS5.

It should be noted that this is a demo and has been created specifically to show what the engine is capable off and all of its features, but whether or not other developers who choose to use the engine will push it to its max remains to be seen, but at the very least we know what it is capable of achieving.

Right off the bat, what is pretty obvious are the lighting techniques and technology that is used in Unreal Engine 5, where it is incredibly dynamic and also realistic. Dubbed Lumen, this is a new global illumination tool that is dynamic and adaptable, where it can change things like the sun’s angle based on different times in the day, turning on a flashlight, or having indirect light adapt accordingly like when a hole is blown in the ceiling, and so on.

The company is also expected to slightly modify its approach with Unreal Engine 5 in terms of revenue. With previous releases, Epic would allow developers to use Unreal Engine for free but will claim 5% from sales generated by the game after the first $3,000. However, with Unreal Engine 5, the company has increased that cap and will allow developers to keep all royalties for the first $1 million in sales generated, and then take a 5% cut after that.

Chicago Will Now Require Food Delivery Companies To Be More Transparent With Costs

While food delivery services aren’t exactly new, now that much of the world is on lockdown, such businesses have become more important than ever. However, there are some restaurants and businesses who are resisting using food delivery services simply because it actually ends up making them lose money.

This is because usually, these delivery services end up taking a cut out of the total order, which means that unless restaurants charge a markup in their prices to cover this cut, they actually end up making less. To make it clearer to customers who much restaurants are making (or losing), the city of Chicago will be implementing a new rule that will show how much a restaurant is paying a food delivery service when using a food delivery app.

This means that the next time you use a food delivery app to order your food, you should see an itemized breakdown of everything, including the cost of delivery, tips, taxes, and also how much is being paid to the company that is delivering your food. This rule is expected to come into effect on the 22nd of May and will apply not just to mobile apps, but also to websites that offer delivery services.

According to Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, “By providing customers with more transparency when they use these delivery services, we can further ensure not only fair business practices for our restaurants but also maintain the innovation that is essential to this industry.”

Microsoft Wants To Use AI To Help Improve Object Recognition For The Visually Impaired

Those who are visually impaired might either have a hard time seeing or are unable to see at all. However, thanks to technology like object recognition, we’ve seen how our smartphone cameras can be used to “see” the room and identify objects by announcing them out loud to the user.

Microsoft has made some strides on that front, but the company thinks that they could do better. How so? By making object recognition more contextual and more personal to the user using it. For example, object recognition might be able to recognize objects like keys, glasses, a remote control, but are these objects important to the person? What if a person who is visually impaired is trying to find their cane? What if someone moved the user’s keys to a different spot?

According to Microsoft, “There has been no effort to collect images of objects that may be particularly important to users who are blind or low vision. Providing a larger dataset for researchers and developers to use to build better AI systems could be a game changer in this area, for people who are blind or low vision in particular but also for everyone.”

To that end, the company has conducted a pilot study where they want to see and understand how those who are visually impaired might take videos, and from there, they will investigate these videos to understand what kind of objects might be of greater importance to those who are visually impaired. This in turn could then be applied to existing tech like Microsoft’s Seeing AI or even wearables like Project Tokyo.
