Google Duo Group Calls Will Be Coming To The Web

With many people being stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, video calling apps and services are becoming increasingly popular. Companies are also stepping up their offerings, like with Google Duo where according to Google, the service will soon be able to support group calls via the web.

Previously, group calls made on Duo were only available using the app on iOS or Android devices, but according to Google, “In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to make group calls with Duo on the web, starting as a preview on Chrome, alongside a new layout that lets you see more people at the same time.”

Google also announced that they will be making it easier to join group calls just by clicking on a link. “To make getting together easier, you’ll also be able to invite anyone with a Google account to join a group call with just a link.” While Duo has been around for a while, the rocketing popularity of Zoom has seen the company make great strides in what the platform offered.

Even companies such as Microsoft have stepped their game up with Skype, while Facebook has also introduced enhanced video calling capabilities with its services like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. As Google states, the feature will be rolling out in the next few weeks, so do keep an eye out for it.

watchOS 7 Could Come With The Ability To Detect Panic Attacks

The Apple Watch has done a great job so far of being able to pick up on heart issues, but what about other health problems? It turns out that one potential new feature coming to the Apple Watch is the ability to look out for mental health problems, such as panic attacks. This is according to Jon Prosser who recently spoke on an episode of the Geared Up podcast.

According to Prosser, it seems that one of the features of watchOS 7 is the ability to monitor the mental health of the wearer, and be able to warn the user of an impending panic attack before it even happens. This could be useful if you’re outside driving and where you will probably want to pull over somewhere safe first.

“What their biggest focus on is right now and I hope it comes this year, it might come next year, but I hope it’s coming to WWDC is mental health capabilities. Where they can take the oxygen levels in your blood with your heart rate and determine if you’re hyperventilating.” However, it seems that this could be a feature only available on the Apple Watch 6.

This is because the device is rumored to come with a blood oxygen monitor, and Apple will apparently use that to help monitor for instances of panic attacks. Prosser does caution that it is possible that the feature might only be released next year, so we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, do take it with a grain of salt.

Office For The iPad To Get Trackpad Support Later This Year

Over the years, Apple has slowly been making inroads in transforming its iPad into a productivity powerhouse. Some of the recent changes include allowing users to use a mouse with a tablet, cursor support, and most recently, trackpad support with the launch of a new Magic Keyboard accessory.

The good news for those who are looking to make the switch to the iPad as a laptop replacement, it has been revealed that Microsoft is planning to introduce trackpad support for their Office apps on the iPad this year, or according to The Verge, by the fall of 2020. This means that when coupled with the Magic Keyboard or other compatible accessories, you’ll be able to use your iPad like a laptop.

Of course, there still needs to be work done on iPadOS before it can be considered a true laptop replacement. Multitasking is obviously a very different experience on the iPad compared to macOS, but Apple has been making some progress on that front. Also, what’s interesting about these changes is that it does give us a glimpse as to what the future could look like for Apple products.

The company has long been rumored to be considering making a switch to ARM-based chipsets for its Mac computers, so support for mouse and trackpad and multitasking on the iPad is like a sneak peek of that future.

LG Velvet Mid-Range Smartphone Announced

Earlier in April, LG started to tease a new smartphone where it would be adopting a new design compared to LG’s other handsets. Dubbed the LG Velvet, the company continued to tease the phone including some of its specs, and for those who are interested, the LG Velvet has been officially announced over in South Korea.

Based on its specs, this is not going to be a high-end device. We’re looking at the use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chipset instead of the Snapdragon 865 which is found in flagship smartphones like the LG V60. It will, however, sport a massive 6.8-inch display and under the hood, a 4,300mAh battery.

We’re also looking at 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a triple camera setup on the back that LG had previously referred to as a “raindrop” design. The setup includes a 48MP main camera sensor, an 8MP ultra wide camera, and a 5MP depth sensor. The phone will also come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, great news for those who still prefer using wired headphones.

As for its price, the LG Velvet is priced at 899,800 won in Korea, which roughly converts to $700 in the US. While it sports mid-range specs, the $700 price tag is rather steep. However, this is a direct conversion which means when it does get released stateside, the final price could be different. LG is expected to share more details about a global launch soon, so check back with us then for additional information.

Fitbit Launches Study To See If Its Devices Can Detect Irregular Heartbeats

Apple has found tremendous success with its Apple Watch, where over the years, we’ve come across countless stories of how the wearable was able to detect abnormal heart rates and inform the wearer that they should seek medical help, saving live in the process. In fact, recently there was an incident where the Apple Watch detected a problem that a more traditional ECG machine did not.

Now it looks like Fitbit wants to enjoy that same level of success and have announced the launch of a virtual study to see if its devices are just as capable, if not more so, at detecting irregular heartbeats. The company is hoping to enroll hundreds of thousands of people for its study, and it will be open to anyone in the US who are above the age of 22, and own devices like the Fitbit Ionic or the Fitbit Versa.

The company has been working on this feature for quite a while now, where it was previously reported that they have been developing a method to detect irregular heartbeats since October 2019. We’re not sure how well it will perform in this study and if it will be able to match or surpass that of the Apple Watch, but it’s good news for Fitbit customers and other users who might be seeking alternatives to the Apple Watch.
