Researchers Have Developed Antibodies That Are Proving Effective Against The Coronavirus

The race is on to find a cure, treatment, and vaccine for the coronavirus pandemic that is still very much plaguing the entire world. This is because without such options, life will never be able to fully return to normal, but there is good news as it appears that separate groups of researchers seem to be having some luck in developing antibodies that show promising signs.

These research teams come from various parts of the world, such as the Netherlands, Israel, and Japan. The researchers were successful in developing strong antibodies that appear under lab conditions, seem to be capable of neutralizing the virus. However, like we said, these are under lab conditions which means that it is unclear how it will work in humans and if it will be just as effective.

Speaking to The Guardian, researcher Berend-Jan Bosch from Utrecht University said, “Such a neutralizing antibody has potential to alter the course of infection in the infected host, support virus clearance or protect an uninfected individual that is exposed to the virus.” Needless to say that so far all these drugs will have a ton of hurdles to overcome before they can even be considered effective and safe for the masses, so we could be in for a wait.

In the meantime, other companies are working on vaccines, such as Moderna who are hoping to move onto the second phase of its trials. There are also some who are floating more controversial ideas, such as deliberately infecting healthy hosts with the virus to help speed up these trials.

I Asked a Linguist to Pronounce X Æ A-12. He Couldn't

In the days following the birth of X Æ A-12, a human baby recently born to Grimes and fathered by Elon Musk, I have tried my best to just ignore the fact that two wealthy people have procreated and saddled that progeny with a code from a rejected Dan Brown novel rather than a name. But upon hearing both parents’…

Base iPhone 12 Model Could Come With A Triple Camera Setup

When Apple introduced the iPhone XR, it came with a single camera that made up for the lack of a second lens by using software to achieve similar effects and results. Apple later upgraded this camera in the iPhone 11, where the Pro and Pro Max models came with triple cameras, but the base model was upgraded to two.

Now it looks like the iPhone 12 could be getting a similar upgrade, where according to renders shared on YouTube by Pigtou that are based on leaked CAD drawings, it seems that the base iPhone 12 model could be getting an upgrade from a dual camera setup to a triple camera setup. This does not mean that the Pro and Pro Max models will get a quad camera setup, but it could mean that in terms of optics, the base model could finally offer up similar performance.

For those who might be unfamiliar with Apple’s releases, for the past few years, the company has released a mix of iPhones with OLED and LCD screens. The base (and cheaper) model usually comes with an LCD screen and other compromises that helps make it cheaper. To date this is mostly in the camera department, but the latest leak suggests that things could be different this year.

Apple has had quite a lot of success with the iPhone XR and the iPhone 11, so unless the company plans on raising the prices of the iPhone 12’s base model, we expect that trend to continue.

Google Lens Can Now Pronounce The Words It Translates

Google Lens is an incredibly useful tool where thanks to text and object recognition, it allows users to search for an image simply by pointing their cameras at it. It also comes in handy when you need to translate something physical, like a menu written in a foreign language, or a physical document that’s written in another language.

Now in an update to Google Lens, the company will be making the tool a bit more useful and perhaps even educational, where not only does it translate words you point at it, but it will also be able to pronounce the original text. So if you’re traveling overseas and want to know how to pronounce particular words to make yourself seem less of a tourist, these pronunciations could help with that.

However, that’s not all the update brings to the table. Lens will also be able to select words and users can tap on those words or phrases for an explanation about them, similar with how Google handles search results. Users will also be able to pseudo scan physical documents to their computers by scanning the text with lens and select “copy to computer”, and you’ll be able to paste it on a device that you’re signed into Chrome on.

Tinder To Launch In-App Video Chats Later This Year

The early days of social media were pretty much its glory days, where it was relatively new and people who joined it were pretty much who they said they were. These days, it’s not uncommon to receive spam messages from bot and fake accounts, and this is a problem that has similarly plagued the likes of dating apps like Tinder.

If you’re hoping to avoid getting catfished on Tinder, you might be interested to learn that Tinder’s parent company, Match Group, has announced that the app will soon come with the ability for in-app video chats. This means that users will actually be able to see each other in real-time, which does potentially reduce the risk of being catfished by someone pretending to be someone else.

Of course this isn’t exactly a foolproof system, but if someone if refusing to hop on a quick video call before you meet up, that could be a red flag that could give you some pause. On the social aspect side, it makes sense too as some users might be uncomfortable giving out more information about themselves and would prefer to keep their communication within Tinder itself.

According to Match Group, the feature should be rolled out in Q2 2020, so expect it to debut in the coming weeks or months. With social distancing measures still being kept in place, this might actually be a pretty good idea.
