Samsung Money Is The Company’s Answer To The Apple Card

Earlier this month, Samsung revealed that they were planning on launching their own debit card. Now it looks like the company has done just that as Samsung has taken the wraps off what they’re calling “Samsung Money by SoFi”. For those unfamiliar, SoFi is the fintech company that Samsung has chosen to partner with for its debit card.

However, unlike the Apple Card which acts like an actual credit card, Samsung Money is a debit card. This means that how much you can spend is pretty much limited to how much you have in your bank account, so you won’t be able to spend more than what you have in your account balance, which we suppose is a good thing as it doesn’t put you into debt.

It will, however, share similar traits to the Apple Card where the physical card itself is blank and does not display the card’s number, expiration date, or the CVV, thus protecting users from fraud or identity theft. Samsung also notes that the Samsung Money card is FDIC insured for up to $1.5 million.

According to Sang Ahn, Vice President and GM of Samsung Pay, North America Service Business, Samsung Electronics, “Samsung’s goal is to make everyday life better by putting powerful tools in the hands of Galaxy users. Now, users can access mobile-first financial services and earn exclusive Samsung benefits. We’re excited to help our users reach their financial dreams by allowing them to spend, save and grow their money and access it easily and securely.”

Canon’s Webcam Software Is Now Available For Mac Users

Back in April, Canon announced that they would be releasing software for Windows PCs in which it would allow users to turn their Canon cameras into webcams. Given that video conferencing is rising in popularity these days due to the coronavirus pandemic that has forced many to work and study from home, this was excellent news.

So what about Mac users? For Mac users who weren’t feeling the love, not to worry because Canon has since announced that its EOS Webcam Utility Beta software is now available for macOS as well. This means that if you’re a Mac user with a compatible Canon camera, you can download the software and start using your Canon camera as a webcam.

According to Canon, “Similar to the Windows operating system version released April 28, the new macOS compatible software solution requires one single USB plug (which may need to be purchased separately) to connect the compatible camera to the computer. Once the software is downloaded and the camera is configured within a video conferencing application, the user will have improved video appearance while participating in video conferencing and virtual meetings.”

Having an official method of using your camera as a webcam is no doubt a pretty useful one. Prior to this, most camera users would have to turn to third-party software and purchase additional accessories, but with official software now available, it should be pretty much a plug-and-play situation. The software is available for download via Canon’s website.

Ads Are About To Invade Instagram’s IGTV Videos

While browsing Instagram Stories, occasionally you’ll come across an ad or two. For the most part, Instagram’s IGTV videos have been kept ad-free, but that is expected to change. While it might be annoying for viewers who hate ads, it might actually be good news for creators who are looking to make a living by making IGTV videos.

In an announcement by Instagram, they have revealed that ads will be coming to IGTV videos, but like we said, this could be a good thing for creators. This is because Instagram will be sharing revenue from ads similar to how YouTube also shares ad revenue with its creators. This would make Instagram a more viable alternative to YouTube.

According to Instagram, “Starting next week, we are introducing ads in IGTV, our long-form video destination. We want to support creators’ investment in IGTV by sharing advertising revenue with them. IGTV ads will initially appear when people click to watch IGTV videos from previews in their feed. The video ads will be built for mobile and up to 15 seconds long.”

For those unfamiliar, IGTV is where Instagram users will be able to upload videos that are longer in length. This is versus Stories which are limited to 15 seconds per Story. Whether or not these changes will start seeing creators swap from YouTube to IGTV remains to be seen.

Skullcandy’s Latest Wireless Earbuds Comes With Tile Tracking Integration

Tile’s trackers are useful if you’re looking to locate misplaced items like keys, bags, and so on. However, in recent years, we’re starting to see more products get integrated with Tile’s trackers, meaning that you won’t need an external Tile tracker in order to keep track of them in the event you’ve misplaced it.

Skullcandy’s latest pair of wireless earbuds will be taking advantage of the technology as the company could very well be the first to integrate Tile’s tech into this form factor. Tracking the earbuds will be pretty straightforward where you can use your phone and the accompanying app to try and locate them. However, there will be an added benefit in which the earbuds can also enlist the help of other nearby Tile trackers to boost its search capabilities.

To be fair, wireless earbuds like Apple’s AirPods do come with their own tracking features, but by using Tile, it does make the tech more available to other brands who might be interested in doing something similar of their own. Also, we should note that this is not the first time we’re seeing Tile and Skullcandy work together.

In 2018, Skullcandy unveiled its Venue headphones that come with Tile tracking capabilities, and we’ve also seen Tile work with Bose to offer up similar features, but this would be a first as far as wireless earbuds are concerned. Skullcandy’s new wireless earbuds are priced starting at $60 and are available from the company’s website.

Facebook Launches New Voice Calling App CatchUp

Facebook Messenger already allows for voice calls, but it seems that Facebook is testing out a new app called CatchUp that will also allow users to make audio-only calls. So what’s the difference? Why would there be a need for a new and separate app? With CatchUp, there will be one main difference: users can show their availability.

We’ve all made phone calls in the past where people sometimes don’t answer as they might not have heard the phone ring or if they’re busy, but since we don’t know that, we have to try our luck. However, with CatchUp, users will be able to set their talk status in the app to show if they’re available to receive calls.

According to Facebook, they explain that this is meant to overcome some of the limitations with phone calls, where people don’t know if they should call because they don’t want to interrupt the other person if they’re busy. By showing their availability status, it is implied that the user is not busy and can be reached via phone.

Facebook claims that the app has actually been in development for a while, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, they accelerated its development to help users stay connected with each other. CatchUp was developed by Facebook’s internal R&D team so whether or not it will become a mainstay product depends on how well-received it is. For now, it is only available in the US for both iOS and Android devices.
