NBA Could Use Oura Rings To Help Detect COVID-19 Symptoms In Players

The COVID-19 virus pandemic has yet to be fully contained and until a vaccine can be found and administered, it has been generally advised that people should practice social distancing. This means that a lot of events that involve a lot of people, such as sporting events, need to either be put on hold or find ways to hold them safely.

As far as the NBA is concerned, it seems that they will be turning to the use of technology to help them deal with the COVID-19 situation. According to a report from The Athletic (paywall), they have managed to get their hands on an internal memo in which it describes the NBA’s plans to handle future games, such as how they would go about testing players, quarantine protocols, and so on.

However, what was interesting about the memo is that it mentions that it proposes the use of the Oura smart ring. For those unfamiliar, the Oura ring was recently found to be capable of detecting COVID-19 symptoms early. By equipping players with the ring, it means that players who might have contracted the disease will be notified and given that it can detect symptoms early, the NBA will have more time to deal with the situation and to prevent further spreading.

It should be noted that the proposal claims that the rings are optional and that players can choose not to use them if they don’t want to. The data on the rings will also not be made available to the team staff unless the detects the player might be sick, in which it will require further medical review.

The Oura ring has yet to be officially adopted but it’s interesting to see how these types of tech are finding their way into sports.

Google Will Default To Using Phone Notifications For Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentications are a great way for you to secure your online accounts. This is because even if a hacker were to guess your password, the one-time generated code used by 2FA systems means that they will not be able to log into your account as these codes are generally sent to your phone.

For the most part, these codes are sent using SMS which is fine, but if you’d rather not deal with SMS, Google has announced that starting in July, they will be defaulting their 2FA checks to phone notifications. According to Google, phone prompts are said to be more secure compared to text or voice codes, plus they are also a lot easier to use.

Google claims, “This means that if you sign in to your Google account and are also signed in on a smartphone, you will be asked to follow phone prompts to verify the login attempt. This will help increase account security while making it easier to sign in.” However, it should be noted that this will only apply to accounts that do not use security keys.

For those who use security keys like Google’s Titan, then this won’t apply to you as the security key acts as an authenticator already as long as it is plugged into your device. These changes are expected to roll out on the 7th of July, but it could take a week or two before it becomes available to everyone.

Facebook Portal Will Now Support Up To 50 Users Per Call

With Facebook’s somewhat checkered history with regards to user privacy, many were incredulous when the company announced its Portal video calling device back in 2018 as it basically put a Facebook camera in your home. However, if you do own a Portal, then the latest update could be of interest to you.

In an announcement by Facebook, they have revealed that the latest update to Portal will now allow as many as 50 users per video call. This is thanks to Facebook expanding its Messenger Rooms feature to the device, where according to Facebook, “Starting today, you can easily hang out with friends and family on video group calls with Messenger Rooms on Portal — shareable video chat links for up to 50 people make it easier to get together with others remotely.”

For those unfamiliar, Messenger Rooms is basically Facebook’s challenger to Zoom. Messenger had previously allowed users to make video calls, but with Messenger Rooms, it expanded the number of active users per call to as many as 50. While it isn’t as many as Zoom’s 100 user limit, we imagine that it will still be more than sufficient for most users.

In addition to allowing 50 users per call, Facebook has also updated Portal with new background options so that you can hide your room’s messy background while you’re on a video call with your colleagues.
