Amazon Turns To AI And AR To Help Its Warehouse Workers Socially Distance

To combat the spread of the coronavirus, many health experts around the world have advised people to practice social distancing. This means that people should stand at a distance away from each other to prevent the virus from transmitting, or at least make it a bit more difficult for it to find a new host.

Over at Amazon, the company has announced a new feature they’ll be implementing in its warehouse called “Distance Assistant”. This will rely on augmented reality, time-of-flight sensors, and also AI to help enforce social distancing rules amongst its warehouse workers by letting them know if they get too close to each other.

According to Amazon, “As people walk past the camera, a monitor displays live video with visual overlays to show if associates are within 6 feet of one another. Individuals remaining 6 feet apart are highlighted with green circles, while those who are closer together are highlighted with red circles. The on-screen indicators are designed to remind and encourage associates to maintain appropriate distance from others.”

Amazon is not the first to employ the use of AR to help with social distancing. Previously, we’ve seen similar efforts rolled out to apps such as Snapchat, and Google themselves have also used AR to help people practice social distancing.

Apple Patents A Way To Keep Drivers Alert In Self-Driving Cars

One of the perks of self-driving cars is that, well, it drives itself. This means that in theory, you could be doing something else while the car is being driven. However, this is often not advised because there could be situations where it might need human intervention and if you’re distracted, then it could lead to disastrous consequences.

Apple thinks that they might have an answer to that problem, and according to a patent discovered by AppleInsider, it seems that Apple might have come up with a way to keep drivers alert even in a self-driving vehicle. This will come in the form of notifications and alerts that will prompt users on their devices that they have linked to their car.

As you can see in the diagram above, it shows how an iPad (or an iPhone) could be used to display alerts to the driver as the car drives itself, letting them know of what’s happening around them, like when the light turns green, obstacles on the road, and so on. This is under the presumption that the driver could be using their device while they drive, meaning that these alerts will most certainly grab the attention of the driver.

Apple had previously introduced a do-not-disturb feature in iOS where if it detects the driver is driving, it will turn off notifications to prevent any unwanted distractions.

Google Updates its WiFi Routers With Better Internet Optimization

Internet speeds can vary due to a lot of reasons. For example, someone in your home could be hogging the bandwidth which could slow down your speeds. It could also be due to you being in an area of the home with bad coverage, which can also impact your speeds. Then there could also be issues with your ISP that could also have a negative effect.

However, the good news is that if you own a Google WiFi or Nest WiFi device, Google has recently announced a new software update for these devices that should help with your internet optimization. While it will not necessarily make your internet faster, it should make the routers “smarter” in terms of handling your internet which could help deal with buffering issues.

According to Google, “This update will improve overall network performance on slow internet connections, which means your Wi-Fi will better support multiple video calls, gaming sessions and more simultaneously. It includes general security and stability improvements and will also improve device connection speeds on wireless networks and optimizations so your devices move to faster Wi-Fi radio channels.”

The update is currently in the process of being rolled out, so your Google WiFi or Nest WiFi devices should get them automatically. In the meantime, if you need some tips on how to make your internet faster, do check out our guide.
