Apple Maps Will Now Remind Users To Self-Isolate

While there are travel restrictions put into place pretty much all over the world, some travel is still allowed as people need to go to other countries for work or other emergency reasons. The SOP is that whenever you come back from travel, you should self-isolate for a couple of weeks to make sure that you’re not infected with the coronavirus.

In case it wasn’t already obvious for some people, it seems that Apple has introduced a little reminder in their Apple Maps app. Thanks to a tweet by Kyle Seth Gray on Twitter, it appears that whenever Apple Maps detects that you might have been at the airport, it will then send you a little reminder that you should stay home and self-isolate if you have traveled recently.

Of course, you could be at the airport for other reasons besides travel, but the reminder will come in handy nonetheless. It actually seems like a nifty feature and will live alongside other features in Apple Maps that will show users where the coronavirus testing locations are near them.

This isn’t the only thing that Apple is doing to help deal with the pandemic. The company had previously teamed up with Google to create a framework for contact tracing to help health officials around the world keep better tabs on people who might be infected or have come into contact with those who are infected.

New Apple Silicon Benchmarks Surface And They Are Promising

Apple’s transition to their own custom chipsets has been called “brave” by some, and we have to agree to a certain extent. Intel is pretty much the dominating hardware of choice when it comes to computer processors, with many applications designed for its hardware, so for Apple to launch something new in such an established ecosystem does seem risky.

However, it seems that Mac users might not need to worry all that much because according to new Geekbench 5 Pro benchmarks, it appears that Apple’s custom silicon is holding its own just fine, if not better. The benchmarks are based on the A12Z chipset inside of a custom Mac Mini computer that is running natively, not through Apple’s Rosetta virtualization software.

This means that in theory, it should perform better, and sure has. Based on these benchmarks, the Mac Mini managed to achieve a single-core score of 1,098 and a multi-core score of 4,555. To give you some context, the 2020 entry level MacBook Air powered by Intel scored 1,005 for single-core performance and 2,000 for multi-core.

Of course, benchmarks only tell one part of the story, but this is the part that we’re sure some are concerned about as to whether or not Apple’s custom silicons will be as powerful as Intel’s. Apple is expected to release their first ARM-based Mac computers by the end of the year, so hopefully we’ll have more details then.

Samsung Could Be Making Exynos Chipsets For Windows PCs

With Apple planning to transition their Mac computers over to a custom ARM-based silicon, we have to wonder if other companies could be planning to do something similar. It does seem like a pretty good opportunity, and according to a report from SamMobile, it seems that Samsung could be planning something similar of their own.

The report claims that Samsung will apparently be making Exynos chipsets designed for Windows PCs. This is interesting if true, although we’re not sure how well-received such a move would be. This is because Samsung has come under fire over its Exynos chipsets, which some users have found to be not as powerful compared to Qualcomm.

If that is the case, Samsung would have to really prove themselves if they’re hoping to convince customers to purchase an Exynos-powered Windows PC. Plus, there will also be a need to convince developers to create apps for the ARM-based chipset, although given how dominant Intel is at the moment, it would be a hard sell.

That being said, ARM-based Windows computers aren’t exactly new. We’ve seen Qualcomm-powered Windows laptops in the past, although admittedly they haven’t exactly caught on. In any case, given that this is a rumor, do take it with a grain of salt for now.
