Trump's New Facebook Ad Uses Protest Photo From Ukraine in 2014, Not U.S. in 2020

President Donald Trump’s latest Facebook ad campaign uses a photo of protesters clashing with police, and suggests there will be “chaos and violence” if the president isn’t re-elected in November. Facebook users who see the new ad will probably assume the photo was taken in the United States sometime this year. In…

Stray Meatball Causes College Student To Fail Her Online Exam

Image credit – WordRidden @ Flickr

These days a lot of students are stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. As such, many education institutions have changed the way lessons are conducted, moving them to online classes. Exams have also changed where more students can now opt to take their exams on the internet as well.

Unfortunately for one student, Sam Lee, who is a junior at the University of Georgia, she flunked her exam after a stray meatball from her sandwich fell out and hit the wrong key on her keyboard. As a result, she accidentally ended her exam before she got to finish, which caused her to get a failing grade.

Thankfully there is a happy ending to this story because according to Lee, she spent the next six hours composing an email to her professor in hopes that she might be allowed to retake the test. Like we said, this is a happy story because her professor was willing to let her retake the exam, while adding a cheeky note at the end of the email.

In the email, the professor wrote, “Samantha, well, this is certainly a new and unusual excuse for a low score! But for that reason it seems unlikely you’ve made this up. I’ve extended your deadline for the module 6 test until midnight tonight. I would recommend you take the test either before or after dinner. :-)”

Netflix Testing Out A Cheaper Mobile-Only Subscription Plan

Netflix can be streamed across multiple types of devices and platforms, but if you’re the type of person that mainly streams on their mobile devices, then you might want to check out Netflix’s latest mobile plan which will come at a much cheaper price compared to the company’s Basic plan.

Dubbed the Mobile+ plan, it is priced at ₹349 a month, which after conversion roughly equates to $4.70. Like we said, this is cheaper than the company’s Basic plan where over in India, it is priced at ₹499 which is roughly $6.70. It should be noted that Netflix already offers a mobile-only plan in India which is cheaper than Mobile+, but it is limited to SD resolution, while Mobile+ will bump its resolution up to HD.

Given that these are mobile-only plans, it means that they will only be playable on a mobile device one device at a time. This includes smartphones and tablets. There is no support for computer or TV viewing, and for that you would need to pay for the Basic plan. However, this is a much cheaper plan that could encourage customers to sign up for it.

Unfortunately, for now it seems that Mobile+ is only limited to India and there is no word on whether or not it will find its way stateside, but given that some customers have been unhappy about Netflix’s continuous increase in price, hopefully they’ll bring this feature here to at least give customers the option.

Microsoft May No Longer Charge For Xbox Online Multiplayer Access

Both Sony and Microsoft have been charging gamers a subscription in order to access online multiplayer. Even Nintendo got in on the action with the Switch, but it seems that Microsoft could be considering ditching the paid subscription, instead they might be making it completely free for gamers to play online with each other.

This is according to a post by well-known Xbox insider Klobrille who was quoted as saying in a forum post, “The question is not if the online multiplayer paywall falls. The question is when.” Assuming this is true, this could represent a huge shift for Microsoft in terms of strategy, and could also represent a potential loss in revenue.

There is some evidence to suggest that this could be true. Microsoft recently stopped selling 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, instead offering only 1 month and 3 month options. It is possible that Microsoft is getting ready to make the transition and don’t want to get stuck with too many legacy subscriptions.

While this could mean a loss of revenue for Microsoft, some speculate that Microsoft is hoping that this could encourage gamers to sign up for the Xbox Game Pass service, which is basically like the Netflix for games. Microsoft has yet to officially comment on the rumors so take it with a grain of salt for now.

Gmail Will Soon Get A Lot Safer With Authenticated Brand Logos

For the most part, Google does a pretty good job at sifting out unwanted emails, such as spam and phishing emails. However, this doesn’t mean that the system cannot be improved upon, which is why Google will soon start to test allowing brands to better authenticate their emails with logos within Gmail.

This means that in the future, if you were to receive an email from an organization like a bank or a news publication that you wanted to make sure was who they say they are, these logos will kind of act like a verified badge of sorts.

According to Google, “Today, we’re excited to announce the pilot of another standard we’ve been working on: Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI). Our BIMI pilot will enable organizations, who authenticate their emails using DMARC, to validate ownership of their corporate logos and securely transmit them to Google. Once these authenticated emails pass all of our other anti-abuse checks, Gmail will start displaying the logo in existing avatar slots in the Gmail UI.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can start relaxing and get complacent, but if anything, it will at least provide some sense of reassurance that the email you receive is indeed from the company that the email claims they are.

2022 iPhone Could Come With A Pretty Insane Zoom

If there is a trend we’ve noticed in smartphones in the past couple of years, it is that companies are starting to make cameras for smartphones that have a pretty long zoom. This seems to be something missing from Apple’s iPhone, but apparently we can expect that to change in the next few years.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he believes that come 2022, Apple’s iPhones could feature the use of a periscope lens system. At the moment, devices that rely on such a system include devices like the Huawei P30 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Right now, the iPhone only allows for 4x optical zoom, which admittedly pales in comparison.

So why is this a big deal? Why would anyone need such a long-range zoom? Zooming into objects or subjects can be used to help create a tighter crop, making it ideal for portraits or closeup photography. It can also be used to capture objects at a distance while maintaining image clarity and quality.

The problem with digital zoom is that for the most part, it crops, which can sometimes result in photos looking grainy and not in focus. These are features that companies like Huawei and Samsung are touting with their smartphone cameras, and perhaps Apple in the future. We’re not sure why Apple is taking so long to introduce the feature, but we suppose better late than never.

Second-Gen AirPods Pro Could Be A Long Time Coming

Apple typically refreshes their products every year. With the AirPods Pro launching in 2019, many expected that the second-gen model could be launching this year, but unfortunately it seems that might not be true. According to a DigiTimes report (paywall), it seems that we could be in for a wait.

The report claims that the second-gen AirPods Pro will only be launching in the second half of 2021. This seems to be in line with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction where he had previously claimed that the earbuds would only go into production in the fourth quarter of 2021 or possibly in the early part of 2022.

We’re not sure why Apple is taking this long to launch the successor to the AirPods Pro, but it is possible that they plan on including a bunch of new features in it that could take time for them to develop. Some of the rumored features include sensors that could help monitor the wearer’s health, like heart rate, step counts, and so on.

Given Apple’s interest in the health sector, especially with the Apple Watch, we wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be true. It would also give them an edge over the competition as the second-gen model could be more than just a pair of wireless earbuds. In the meantime, there have also been rumors that Apple could be working on an AirPods Lite that might launch later this year.
