This App Can Monitor Mental Health By Tracking Your Data

Our wearables and apps can track our health to a certain degree, like how many steps we’ve taken, calories burnt, heart rate, and so on. However, thanks to the work of researchers at the Dalhousie University in Canada, they have created an app that can track the person’s mental health by monitoring your phone data.

Dubbed PROSIT, how this works is that the app will track your mental health by looking at the way you use your phone. For example, it takes a look at how much a person sleeps, how often they exercise, messaging logs, screen time, music preferences, and also their call history. The concept of looking at how a person uses their phone to gauge mental health isn’t exactly new.

In the fact, in the past, researchers have found that by browsing a user’s Instagram profile, they can use the photos uploaded to gauge whether or not a person might have depression. This is done by looking at the photos and their color choices, where certain colors might indicate that a person could be depressed.

This app is most definitely rather invasive, but it could be useful to help medical professionals better tailor their treatment methods according to the patient and their activity.

Twitter Could Soon Let iOS Users Customize Their App’s Icon

One of the great things about Android is that you can download icon packs and change the way your Android apps look on your home screen. This means that users can create certain themes or looks that they like, but unfortunately for iOS, you’re pretty much stuck with whatever the developer has chosen for you.

However, according to a report from 9to5Mac, they have discovered that Twitter could actually be testing out a new feature for iOS in which they will allow users to pick different app icons. As the publication notes, third-party Twitter app Apollo already allows users to pick from different icons, so it wouldn’t be a stretch for Twitter to do the same with its own official app.

We should also point out that iOS and iPadOS actually allows developers to give users the option of choosing different icon options, but to date, we haven’t actually seen many apps take advantage of this and give users the option. We suppose it is more work for them to create new icons, plus we’re not sure how many users would actually bother.

However, this could become more a mainstream thing because with iOS 14, Apple is changing up the home screen in a big way by letting users include widgets that can affect the overall layout, so maybe more developers might take advantage of this in the future. That being said, it is unclear if Twitter will actually implement this feature or if it is something they’re experimenting with, so we’ll just have to wait and see if it happens.

Several Hong Kong Based VPNs Caught Logging User Data

One of the many reasons people choose to use VPNs is because they’re designed to encrypt your data and also guard your privacy. That is pretty much its main selling point, where you can use it when you’re on public WiFi or if you simply rather not have your internet provider know what you’re up to.

However, it appears that over in Hong Kong, Comparitech’s Bob Diachenko discovered that there were several VPNs who were logging user data, despite the fact that they advertised that they did not embark on such practices. This included nearly 1TB worth of records in an Elasticsearch cluster by UFO VPN.

The logs contained data such as account passwords, tokens, IP addresses of user devices, and VPN servers that these users connected to, all of which appeared to be stored in plaintext format which basically allowed anyone to view them. When UFO VPN were alerted to the issue, they blamed the coronavirus pandemic for the issue, stating that due to “personnel changes”, it prevented its staff from securing the database’s networking.

UFO VPN is not alone in this as several other Hong Kong-based VPN services were found doing the same thing. As for UFO VPN, they claimed that these logs were kept for traffic-performance monitoring, even though that seems to go against the company’s claims that they do not track user activities.
