MIT’s Art AI Finds Connections Between Paintings We Did Not Know Existed

Are there such things as a truly unique piece of artwork? After all, artists derive their inspiration from all kinds of things, so sometimes subconsciously, they might have created a piece of artwork that could resemble something else without them knowing, and it is this connection that MIT’s AI is able to sniff out.

Developed by researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Microsoft, they have created an algorithm that is capable of discovering potential hidden connections between art pieces that might not have otherwise been discovered by humans just by looking at it.

The AI dubbed MosAIc was inspired by a special exhibit called “Rembrandt and Velazquez” at the Rijksmuseum. By using deep networks, it attempts to find analogous works from different cultures and artists. One of the examples was Francisco de Zurbarán’s “The Martyrdom of Saint Serapion” and Jan Asselijn’s “The Threatened Swan” which despite featuring very different subjects, were found to portray “profound altruism with an eerie visual resemblance”.

According to lead author Mark Hamilton, “These two artists did not have a correspondence or meet each other during their lives, yet their paintings hinted at a rich, latent structure that underlies both of their works.” The AI also goes beyond just recognizing colors, but also the theme and the meaning behind the artworks.

Hamilton adds, “Going forward, we hope this work inspires others to think about how tools from information retrieval can help other fields like the arts, humanities, social science, and medicine. These fields are rich with information that has never been processed with these techniques and can be a source for great inspiration for both computer scientists and domain experts. This work can be expanded in terms of new datasets, new types of queries, and new ways to understand the connections between works.”

Instagram Is Throwing Money At Creators To Lure Them Over From TikTok

Instagram is working on a TikTok competitor in the form of Reels. The app has launched in several markets and is expected to find its way stateside next month. However, will it manage to be as popular as TikTok? While it’s hard to say if it will, it seems that Instagram is doing everything they can to make that happen.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it seems that Instagram is basically throwing money at TikTok creators to try and lure them onto their platform. The company is said to have set aside hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay to creators, where more money will be given to creators who are willing to create content exclusive to Reels.

For those who are unwilling to make the exclusive switch, Instagram is said to be asking these creators to create content posted onto Reels first before it goes onto other platforms. While competing services aren’t new, this is actually a pretty good time for Instagram to try and get Reels off the ground.

This is because it was previously reported that the US government was considering banning TikTok due to tensions between China (TikTok’s parent company is from China). Assuming that happens, it will leave a massive hole in the market that we’re sure Instagram is all too willing to fill.

Despite US-China Tensions, Apple Was The Fastest Growing Brand In China

It is no secret that tensions between the US and China are at an all-time high, but it seems that despite the frosty attitudes both countries have against each other, Apple actually seems to be doing pretty well over in China. This is according to a report from Counterpoint Research where they found that Apple was the fastest growing smartphone brand in Q2 2020.

According to their data, Apple’s smartphone sales volume grew by 32% year-over-year. This beats out the likes of Huawei who grew 14% YOY, while other Chinese smartphone brands such as Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi actually saw negative growth. It has been suggested that this explosion in growth is thanks to the iPhone SE, whose affordable price tag makes it a value for money purchase.

However, it seems that Apple’s massive growth in Q2 2020 in China wasn’t enough to give it much of a market share in the country. According to Counterpoint, it appears that Huawei’s market share in China as of Q2 2020 is sitting at a massive 46%, whereas Apple’s market share in the country is at 9%.

The report also suggests that 5G smartphone sales in the country are actually doing pretty well, where one in three smartphones sold in the country are 5G. Apple is expected to launch a 5G iPhone later this year, so it will be interesting to see how it might affect the company’s market share.

High-Res Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G Renders Leaked

Next week it is expected that Samsung will be announcing their next-gen foldable smartphone. Thanks to leaked renders obtained by MySmartPrice, we now know what the phone could look like and what it could be called, where it seems that it will be known as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G.

Yes, that is quite a mouthful, but it appears that Samsung will be using the Galaxy Z branding for its foldable devices. Also, the leaked renders seem to reveal some of the changes we might be able to expect from the phone. For starters, the outer display is now bigger and more usable than before, where it can be used in closed mode as a regular smartphone.

The camera modules also appear to be a bit different on the back, as well as on the inside of the phone where it seems that Samsung has gotten rid of the notch in favor of a hole-punch display. We’re not sure if Samsung has made any changes to the hinge mechanism of the phone to make it more durable, but hopefully they have.

Also, based on the name, it suggests that the phone will most likely come with 5G, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 5G that was launched last week.

Qualcomm Seemingly Confirms The iPhone 12’s Delay

Right now there is a bit of confusion as to when the iPhone 12s will be launched. Some believe that the phones will still be announced in September but could be released later, while others believe that the launch could take place later. Now according to a tweet by Jon Prosser and also Qualcomm, it looks like we can expect the new iPhone 12s in October.

According to the tweet by Prosser, he claims that the iPhone 12 and new iPads are expected to launch in October. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but like we said, Qualcomm also seems to hint at the possible delay.

This is according to an interview with Reuters in which Qualcomm’s CFO Akash Palkhiwala claimed that the company expects to see lower revenue in the coming quarter due to the delay of a flagship phone launch. The exec was quoted as saying, “We’re seeing a partial impact from the delay of a flagship phone launch. And so what we’ve seen is a slight delay that pushes some of the units out from the September quarter to the December quarter for us.”

As some of you might have heard, Apple and Qualcomm have settled their legal disputes and it is widely believed that Apple will be relying on Qualcomm to supply the 5G modems for the iPhone 12. In any case, take it with a grain of salt but we should have more details in the coming months.

Go Back In Time With This Mac OS 8 Emulator For Your PC

Most of us are probably familiar with Apple’s Mac computers which currently run on Intel. Some of you might even be familiar with the fact that before the move to Intel, Apple’s Mac computers ran on the PowerPC architecture, but did you know that even before that, Apple’s Mac computers were powered by Motorola’s CPUs?

If you want to see what it’s like to run a Mac computer that’s several decades old, then you might want to check out Felix Rieseberg’s project in which he has created an emulator that lets you run Mac OS 8 on your Windows, macOS, or Linux computer. This is an emulator created using JavaScript and it is a bit limited in terms of what it can do.

It isn’t necessarily designed to be similar to other virtualization apps like Parallels and it’s more of a fun project that is a throwback to the good old days. If Rieseberg’s name sounds familiar, it is because several years ago he created a similar emulator that allowed users to run Windows 95 on more modern machines.

That being said, we can’t imagine that Apple is too thrilled about this as it is possible that it infringes on certain intellectual properties, so if you are interested in checking it out, you might want to move quick and download it from GitHub while it is still available.

Frustrating study warns antioxidant foods may fuel certain cancers

These polyphenols, flavonoids, and other plant compounds have been linked with a variety of benefits, including reducing blood pressure, helping control blood sugar, and even reducing the risk of developing cancer. A new study underscores the fact that nothing is perfect, however, warning that antioxidant-rich foods may fuel … Continue reading
