A 1,000 Medieval Recipe Found To Be A Viable Antibiotic

There is growing concern that because of the amount of antibiotics we are prescribed, that eventually our bodies will develop resistance against them which means that it will make it harder to fight off infections in the future, especially when we need to. However, thanks to a 1,000 medieval recipe, it appears that maybe a more natural antibiotic solution has been found.

Dubbed Bald’s eyesalve, it seems that this antibiotic was created using rather natural ingredients such as onion, garlic, wine, and bile salts (taken from a cow’s stomach). Given that it was made with a bunch of natural products rather than a single compound, the researchers have found that it gives Bald’s eyesalve the potential to be a potent anti-biofilm.

The researchers believe that such a recipe could be used to treat certain illnesses that might be particularly prone to be resistant to antibiotics, like diabetic foot infections which are known to be a super-resistant biofilm infection that can lead to sepsis and end up with patients having their toes, feet, or lower legs amputated.

Of course, with all medicine, there needs to be testing to ensure that it is safe for consumption. So far based on their initial tests, the researchers have found that it has a “promising safety profile”, but further testing will need to be done to be certain.

This Device Will Stop Alexa From Hearing You

Our smart speakers are listening to us all the time. This isn’t really spying, but rather they are listening out for commands so that they can respond whenever we ask a question. However, we totally get it if you feel a bit uncomfortable knowing that a company could possibly be listening to your every word and you don’t know for sure if they aren’t.

Enter Alexagate. This is a $100 device that fits on top of most of Amazon’s Alexa speakers. The idea is that it emits ultrasonic frequencies so that Alexa can’t hear what you’re saying. If you do want to summon Alexa, just tap three time on top of the device to pause the ultrasonic frequency, and you will be able to use your smart speaker just fine.

As the frequency used is beyond the range of human hearing, you will not be able to hear it which means that it will not interfere with your day to day activities. Of course, this might kind of negate the entire reason of having a smart speaker in the first place, but if you’re someone who truly values their privacy, it might be worth taking a look at.

If you want to get your hands on Alexagate, you can head on over to their website for the details on how to buy it. For now it seems to only work with Amazon’s Echo devices, so for other digital assistants or speakers, you’re out of luck, at least for now.

Future AirPods Could Rely On Bone Conductivity To Deliver Audio

Sound is basically vibrations, which is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that some audio companies are relying on those vibrations to create earphones that use bone conductivity to deliver audio to the listener. However, such earphones aren’t exactly common, but maybe future AirPods could employ the use of the technology.

According to a patent that was discovered by AppleInsider, it seems that Apple is exploring the potential use of bone conduction that could find its way to AirPods in the future. Of course, whether or not they do is another story, but there are some advantages to using bone conduction that might make it a good reason to develop such a product.

For starters, bone conduction will work for everyone, even those who might be hearing impaired. Secondly, since it doesn’t exactly go into your ear canals, bone conduction audio devices will leave the user free to take in the environmental noise, which might be useful when they’re out in public and need to be aware of things like traffic or have conversations. It can also make it feasible to be used underwater.

We imagine that such a setup when paired with devices like AR glasses could also greatly improve on its functionality, where users won’t need to keep themselves shut out of the outside world. However, as this is a patent, there’s no telling if it is going to be an actual product, so maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Oppo’s Fast Charging Tech Seemingly Degrades Batteries Faster

Fast charging tech has become commonplace in our smartphones today, take for example Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5.0 that was recently announced. However, as is the case with fast charging technology, it can have an impact on your battery’s overall health, and it seems that Oppo’s tech seems to degrade batteries faster than they claim.

Oppo had recently unveiled their 125W wired and 65W wireless charging solution, which sounds great on paper, but according to a group of Italian researchers, they tested out Oppo’s fast charging solution and found that after 255 cycles at 65W of charging, the battery’s capacity dropped to 85%

The company had previously claimed that with their battery charging technology, it would take about 800 cycles before it hits 80% capacity. Assuming you average a full charge a day, it means that it would take a little over two years to hit that mark. However, if the 255 charging cycles are accurate, it means that your phone’s battery will hit 85% capacity in just under a year, which is obviously not good.

Now, we’re not sure how accurate these tests so maybe don’t take it as gospel for the time-being. However, like we said, fast charging does have an impact on overall battery health so it might be something to consider in the future.

Twitter Closes Loophole That Let Users Promote Hate Speech Or Violent Content

Social media platforms such as Twitter do not allow users to post things related to hate speech or violent content. However, some users have found a loophole in which the post itself might not mention anything about hate speech or violence, and may simply provide a link to it, which we suppose helps circumvent Twitter’s filters.

However, that will no long be allowed because it looks like Twitter will finally be closing that loophole where they have announced that starting July 30, 2020, they will start blocking links that might lead users to websites or content that contain hate speech or violence. According to the company, this will come in the form of the same approach that they have taken in the past with regards to malicious links.

According to the company, “At times, Twitter will take action to limit or prevent the spread of URL links to content outside Twitter. This is done by displaying a warning notice when the link is clicked, or by blocking the link so that it can’t be Tweeted at all.” The company also goes on to state that users who continuously post these kinds of URLs could eventually find their accounts suspended.

“Accounts dedicated to sharing content which we block, or which attempt to circumvent a block on the sharing a link, may be subject to additional enforcement action, including suspension.”

Google Is Trying To Convince Samsung To Use Google Assistant Over Bixby

Companies like Samsung rely on Android for their mobile devices. However, given that a lot of mobile hardware and software tend to be the same, companies try to set themselves apart by offering their own software services. For example, with Samsung, the company has their own alternative to the Google Play Store and Google Assistant.

However, it seems that Google doesn’t want that. According to a report from Bloomberg, it seems that Google and Samsung are apparently in discussions for a deal that would give Google’s own services more prominence on Samsung’s mobile devices, such as promoting the use of Google Assistant over Bixby.

In a statement that Google has since released, “Like all Android device makers, Samsung is free to create its own app store and digital assistant. That’s one of the great features of the Android platform. And while we regularly talk with partners about ways to improve the user experience, we have no plans to change that.”

This is actually not the first time that Google and Samsung have discussed such changes. Several years ago, Samsung had agreed to tone down some of the customizations in its TouchWiz UI. This ultimately led to Samsung creating the One UI which is a considerably toned down UI that gives users a more stock experience.

Konami Has Started Selling Desktop Gaming PCs

Konami is a name that many gamers might be familiar with as the publisher behind several extremely popular games such as PES, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, and Silent Hill, just to name a few. However, it seems that the company is branching out into creating other products, such as desktop gaming PCs.

According to a report from Japanese publication PC Watch, the company has launched several desktop gaming PCs under the Arespear brand. There will be three different models to choose right now: the C300, the C700, and the C700+. All three models will sport the same design as far as the chassis is concerned, and will also sport the same dimensions. The main differences would be the internal hardware, and also with the C700+, it will feature an acrylic side panel with RGB lighting.

As for its internals, the C300 will feature Intel Core i5-9400F processors with 8GB of RAM, 512GB of PCIe SSD storage, and will sport an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 GPU. Google Working On Assistant Chat Heads For Android

One of the new features that Google is bringing to Android 11 are Bubbles. The concept of chat heads isn’t new and we’ve seen Facebook use it with Messenger in the past, but with Android 11, Google is bringing it about in a big way. In fact, according to 9to5Google, it seems that Google could be bringing its Assistant feature to Bubbles.

According to an APK teardown, they found evidence that suggests that Google is working on something called Assistant Chat Head. Similar to Bubbles, it shows how Google Assistant can float about on the Android home screen like a contact that you’re chatting with. For now, tapping on it summons Google Assistant.

However, we’re not sure if this is the actual implementation or if it is simply a placeholder. Like we said, given its Bubble-esque nature, we imagine that it would be more about users chatting with Google Assistant instead of speaking to it as that feature can be easily accessed through voice commands or hardware buttons.

It is also unclear how users would be able to place the Assistant Chat Head on their screen or how to enable it. In any case, maybe more details will be revealed once Android 11 has been released.
