Researchers Explore Using Chernobyl Fungi As Radiation Shield For Astronauts
Posted in: Today's ChiliThere are many challenges that come with sending people into space, one of which is actually protecting the astronauts that are being sent there from issues such as radiation. Given that when in space, astronauts are not protected by the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field, naturally we wouldn’t want them to come back irradiated.
So far, scientists have come up with various ways to protect astronauts from radiation while in space, but recently, researchers are exploring another method that you could almost call “organic”. This is by taking the fungi that grew following the Chernobyl reactor meltdown and use it as a possible shield of sorts for astronauts.
The reason for choosing Chernobyl fungi instead of regular fungi is because this particular fungus managed to grow and actually flourish despite being in a highly radioactive place. These are capable of not only absorbing radiation, but are able to take it and convert it into energy for their own use.
The idea is that astronauts could take small samples of the fungus with them on space missions, like that to Mars, and from there the fungus can then be further cultivated into a structure, allow it to thicken, and offer a layer of protection that is sustainable and to a certain extent, free of charge.

Aside from using the iPad as a tablet, which was what it was originally designed for, not too long ago Apple introduced a feature for macOS called Sidecar which basically allows users to use their iPads as a secondary display. However, a patent discovered by AppleInsider has revealed that Apple could have other plans for the iPad in the future.
The patent describes a setup in which two iPads can connect to each other through a connector-like device. As you can see in the diagram above, this will result in a laptop-like setup where the iPad on the top will act as a display, while the iPad below can double up as a virtual keyboard and more.
It could even be used vertically or in portrait mode, where it could be held up like a book of sorts where you could display multiple things on the screen at once for either reading or referencing, kind of like a dual screen smartphone. It has also been suggested that it does not necessarily require two iPads and could actually combine both an iPad and an iPhone together.
What’s interesting about this concept is that it is one that Microsoft is sort of working on. The company seems to believe that dual screen computing devices are the way of the future and are working on mobile devices like the Surface Neo and Surface Duo, and are also developing a version of Windows 10 that will suit such devices.
That being said, it is unclear if Apple will make this patent a reality, so maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Devices like Tile’s Bluetooth trackers allow users to add the tracker to everyday objects like keys, wallets, bags, and so on, where they can then track those items in the event that they misplace them. Taking things to a whole new larger scale is Nali who have announced the N100 device for the location of things and people.
By teaming up with Changhong North America for manufacturing, Codepoint’s N100 tag can be deployed on a larger scale and offer up solutions to businesses who might be looking to implement location of things on their premises en masse in a more affordable way. The tag itself is small and shaped like a credit card and can be adapted, integrated, and programmed according to how businesses see fit.
According to Gary Tu, Managing Director of Changhong North America, “With the introduction of the Nali N100, solution providers now have the means to address opportunities that were previously cost prohibitive or too complex. The rechargeable Nali tag can provide about two months of use per charge under typical conditions. The long-battery life is a great fit for personnel safety, asset tracking, and security monitoring applications.”
Codepoint believes that by handling the hardware from their end, companies can instead focus on the development of software instead of worrying about hardware or infrastructure. Michael Mathews, President and co-founder of Codepoint Technologies adds, “Web and smartphone developers can create/publish their own applications without requiring detailed knowledge of device’s inner workings.”

Google Stadia, the cloud-based game streaming service, requires a fast network to support the type of low-latency gameplay subscribers expect. This makes gaming over cellular networks questionable at best, but times are changing and mobile broadband speeds are quickly evolving. In its latest update, Google says that Stadia players can now stream their game over 4G and 5G networks, but … Continue reading
