Google Pixel 5 Specs Reveal Mid-Range Hardware

It seems that this year’s Pixel smartphones could be a bit disappointing for those who might have been waiting for flagship hardware. This is according to a recent report from Android Central who have published the alleged specs of Google’s upcoming Pixel 5, which some have rightfully expected to come with higher-end specs.

Based on their report, it appears that this year’s Pixel lineup will all sport mid-range hardware. Assuming the report is accurate, the upcoming Pixel 5 is rumored to come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, which is the same chipset Google used with the Pixel 4a. It is also reported that the phone might feature a small-ish display, compared to other phones released, measuring in at 6-inches.

It is also said to sport a refresh rate of 90Hz. Other rumored specs include 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, along with support for 15W Qi wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging. We’re not sure how Google plans to position its phones given that the Pixel 4a’s specs aren’t that drastically different.

While the lack of flagship hardware is a bit disappointing, it’s easy to see why Google might be headed down this path. The company’s Pixel phones have increased in price over the years compared to its Nexus phones in the past, plus given Apple’s success with more affordable handsets, perhaps Google is changing its strategy in hopes that they might be able to capture a larger market.

Alleged AirPower Teardown Shows How Complicated It Is

Last year, Apple cancelled their plans for the AirPower wireless charging mat. The company claimed that they were unable to meet the high standards that they set for themselves, and as such, decided that it would be better to cancel it rather than bring a subpar product into the market.

Now thanks to a video uploaded by Mr.white onto bilibili, it shows the alleged teardown of the AirPower and gives us some insight as to why it might have been cancelled. As you can see in the image above, the AirPower looks crazy complicated. Typically, wireless chargers use coils that are used to charge devices, but Apple has laid it out in such a way that it can be charged anywhere on the mat.

They have also included a keyboard-like array of circuits that looks very complex which some speculate could result in the AirPower being prohibitively expensive, more so than other wireless charging mats in the market today. Some of the earlier reported problems include how the charging mat can actually overheat, and it’s not hard to see why given the complexity of the circuitry.

That being said, we have been hearing rumors that Apple has not given up on the project entirely and that a newer and improved version could actually make its debut at Apple’s iPhone 12 event which is rumored to take place in October.

WeChat Ban Might Only Apply To The US

With the US government considering a ban on popular Chinese social media app WeChat, there are concerns that this ban could have bigger implications than previously thought. For example, it could impact companies such as Apple who have a huge presence in China, and is estimated to potentially lose billions in iPhone sales if the app were to be banned in China,

However, the semi good news is that according to a report from Bloomberg, their sources have told them instead of a blanket ban, the ban of the use of the app might only apply to the US, meaning that the rest of the world is free to keep using the app. It was previously unclear how the government would approach the ban, because given that Apple is a US company, it was speculated that maybe the ban could force Apple to just simply stop all dealings with China.

However, it should be noted that WeChat is one of the primary forms of communication over in China where other popular messaging apps either don’t work or don’t work as well as intended. As a result, people who live in the US might still rely on WeChat for communications with either family members, friends, or business partners over in China.

A recent survey also found that many Chinese customers would stop buying and using an iPhone if such a ban were to go into effect, resulting in Apple losing billions. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously predicted that if this were to be a US-only ban, it might not be as bad, suggesting that shipments could decline by 3-6%.
