Some Of The 2020 iMacs Are Experiencing Screen Glitches

One of the options that Apple has offered to 2020 iMac customers is the ability to configure the computer to come with the Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. This is an additional $500 over the default GPU option, but it seems that this particular configuration is causing some display-related issues.

According to several posts made on the Apple Support Forums, some users are claiming that their iMacs are displaying screen glitches where a line just appears on the screen at random. One user writes, “I’ve just received my new iMac and noticed that from time to time a line glitch appears on my screen. It’s completely random, I thought it was related to intensive work/heat but sometimes even when the computer is idle I see the line on the screen.”

Another adds, “Same problem with my iMac 2020, already appeared during the initial Mac setup and keeps flashing randomly since then. Searching through YouTube and google it seems this is a common problem with the 5700XT gpu that comes with it.” Right now, the issues seems to be isolated to iMacs that are configured with the 5700XT with 16GB of VRAM, so the other models should be “safe”.

It is unclear why this is happening and if it is a software or hardware issue, but hopefully a solution to the problem will arrive soon.

10.8-inch iPad’s Design Revealed In Leaked Schematics

The other day, a series of leaked photos that allegedly shows a new iPad in a pamphlet revealed several changes Apple plans to make to the lower-end iPad lineup. Now thanks to new images shared by 91mobiles, some of those changes seem to have been “confirmed”, or at the very least corroborated.

For those who missed the previous announcements, basically Apple is expected to introduce a new 10.8-inch iPad. This iPad will borrow several design elements from the iPad Pro, including slimmer bezels around the display and also a smart connector on the back that would allow it to attach to accessories like Apple’s Magic Keyboard.

The report from 91mobiles also claims that this new tablet will cost $329 and will also come with Face ID, but this is a point of contention with 9to5Mac. According to 9to5Mac, they seem skeptical that Apple would introduce Face ID to a lower-end tablet while the more expensive upcoming iPad Air 4 will continue to use Touch ID in the power button.

It is possible that maybe these tablets are one and the same, and maybe someone got the names wrong. Either way, since these are leaks and aren’t official, it’s hard to say who is right. It’s probably best to take this with a grain of salt and hope that Apple will have something official to share in the coming month or two.

Japan’s ‘Flying Car’ Gets Off The Ground With A Human Pilot

We’ve all seen the TV shows and movies where everyone seems to be driving a flying car. It always felt like the stuff of science fiction, but it looks like it’s slowly becoming a reality. In fact, over in Japan, they are inching towards such a future thanks to Japan’s SkyDrive who recently successfully tested a flying car which got off the ground with a human pilot in the seat.

According to Tomohiro Fukuzawa, who heads up the SkyDrive effort, he hopes that this flying car can be made into an actual product by 2023, although we are a bit skeptical about that somewhat optimistic timeline. He does, however, acknowledge that there are various safety concerns that need to be addressed before that happens, where people have to feel safe while riding it.

Right now, the machine that they tested out can hover in the air for about 5-10 minutes, which isn’t very long, but still an impressive feat anyway. We’re not sure if the future will ever come with flying cars will become the new standard, especially since cost could be a factor. If it’s too expensive to own one, then no one will want one.

For the more immediate future, self-driving cars are slowly gaining acceptance, thanks to companies like Tesla who have introduced self-driving like features to their cars. We’ve also seen how companies like Google are also working on the technology, and it’s kind of a badly-kept secret that Apple is interested as well.

Pixel 4a iFixit teardown reveals a trap-laden puzzle

The Pixel 4a’s less than premium body normally implies a less than rugged phone. On the upside, that usually means a phone that’s also easy to open up and repair. If the Pixel 3a was anything to go by, iFixit’s silent, or should we say ASMR-inspired, teardown should be straightforward and uneventful. Unfortunately, they do say looks can be deceiving … Continue reading

GoPro Hero 9 Could Be The Ideal Camera For Vloggers

In GoPro’s more recent cameras, the company introduced a front-facing display. However, these displays mostly only displayed information like battery life, recording time, video settings, and so on. We’re sure that there are some users who might prefer if that display could be used for recording as well.

Turns out we might be getting our wish because according to a leak posted by WinFuture.de, it seems that GoPro’s upcoming Hero 9 camera is expected to come with a front-facing color display that will also act as a secondary screen so that users can see what they’re recording when the camera is pointed towards them.

This is something we’re sure that many users, especially vloggers, might appreciate since it ensures that they are always kept in the frame. Interestingly enough, GoPro wouldn’t be the first company in recent times to create a camera aimed at vloggers. Sony had recently launched a new compact camera in the form of the ZV-1 that is also aimed at the vlogging crowd.

Other rumored features of the GoPro Hero 9 include the ability to shoot 5K video and also fold-out mounting arms on the bottom that allows it to attach to mounts without the need for extra housing or accessories. There’s no word on the launch, but based on the clean renders we’re seeing, we wouldn’t be surprised if it were to launch soon.

You Will Soon Be Able To Read Your News Subscriptions Through Facebook

Facebook is used by many publishers to share links to their latest news and articles, but some publishers are behind a paywall and usually require a subscription or that users sign in. If you’re already subscribed, we imagine that this can get pretty annoying when you just want to read the news.

However, Facebook wants to change that and are testing out a way that would allow Facebook users to read news subscriptions that they pay for without the hassle of logging in. This would involve users linking their Facebook account to their subscriptions, meaning that whenever they click on a publication that requires a subscription, it will know that they are a subscriber and just direct them to the content immediately.

According to Facebook, “Early results for publishers in the product test are promising both for subscriber engagement and content distribution. In June, subscribers in our test group who had linked their subscription accounts on Facebook had on average 111 percent more article clicks compared to subscribers who were not part of the test group.”

Of course, this will require users have a subscription to these news services to begin with, but these changes will make it an improved experience for users who already do, and as Facebook points out, could encourage engagement between users and publishers.

New China Rules Could Impact TikTok’s Sale To US Companies

The US government has given TikTok until the middle of the month to find itself a buyer if they hope to continue operating in the country. Of course, given how successful TikTok is, it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that China has introduced a new rule regarding the export of technology to other countries, which in turn could throw a wrench in the US government’s plans.

The new ruling basically says that if companies wish to export Chinese technology to other markets, it will require government approval. While it does not explicitly mention TikTok, there are some who believe that this could impact the deal.

According to Cui Fan, a professor of international trade at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, “ByteDance has a number of cutting-edge technologies in artificial intelligence and other fields, and some technologies may be covered by the adjusted list.”

Alex Capri, a visiting senior fellow at the National University of Singapore adds, “There is genuine concern on the Chinese part if American companies do acquire Chinese interests, systems and Chinese business models, they would somehow be accessing and giving up technology they see as ground breaking. Or possibly they’ll see it as granting Western agents forensic access to Chinese technology.”

Right now Microsoft is the frontrunner as the most likely candidate that could acquire TikTok, but given this new wrinkle, it is unclear if they will be able to meet the imposed deadline. TikTok has also reportedly prepared a contingency plan in the eventuality that they might end up getting banned.

10.8-inch iPad leaked with iPad Pro features

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ were clearly attempts at grabbing back a huge chunk of the tablet market pie but it won’t be long before Apple tries to bite back. Cupertino is expected to announce a few new slates, perhaps across its entire iPad line, but details about the upcoming tablets aren’t as solid as those for the iPhone … Continue reading
