95% Of Chinese Users Would Give Up Their iPhone Rather Than Lose WeChat

As some of you might have heard, the US government is considering banning apps such as WeChat in their ongoing trade war with China. It was previously suggested that such a ban could result in a 30% decline of iPhone sales, but a new survey suggests that it could actually be much worse.

In a survey made on Weibo and discovered by Bloomberg, it seems that 95% of those surveyed claim that they are more likely to give up their iPhone rather than lose access to WeChat. As we had pointed out previously, WeChat is more than just a messaging app. The app is multifaceted in China and various places in the world.

Users can use the app to make mobile payments to retailers, send money to each other, play games, pay their bills, purchase public transportation tickets, and so on. Also, given that China prevents other communication apps like Facebook Messenger from working, there are those living outside of China that rely on the app to keep in touch with friends, family members, or business partners in China.

However, it is unclear how this ban will work. Will it only ban WeChat from being used in the US? Or will Apple be forced to remove the app from their App Store and affect users around the world? We’ll have to wait and find out, but assuming the latter, it could spell big trouble for Apple.

4K Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter Could Be Launching Soon

Want to connect your laptop to a TV but don’t want to deal with the hassles of dragging cables? If you do, you may or may not have heard of the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. For those who haven’t, this is basically an adapter for your TV (or monitor) that gives it wireless capabilities that you can then connect a Windows computer to.

For those who felt that the adapter was a bit lacking, especially in this day and age where we’re seeing higher resolutions, you might be interested to learn that according to a tweet by Roland Quandt, it seems that Microsoft could actually be working on a new adapter that will support 4K resolution.

Presumably it will function similarly to its predecessor, but will now support a higher resolution. This might be useful to a lot of people who might have TVs that support 4K, but due to the lack of 4K support on the previous adapter, the results might end up looking less than ideal. Quandt also claims that the new adapter will be priced at $70 which makes it a bit more expensive than the current model priced at $50.

There is no word on when it will be released, but Quandt notes that it is “incoming” which hopefully means that we’ll be able to expect it soon.

Spotify Applauds Epic’s Decision To ‘Take A Stand’ Against Apple

It was reported earlier that Apple had removed Epic’s Fortnite from the App Store. This was due to Epic’s decision to try and circumvent Apple’s in-app purchasing system in which Epic would have to pay Apple a cut of 30%. To get around that, Epic introduced a direct payment system within the iOS app that would pay Epic directly.

Epic has since sued Apple over that, and now it looks like Epic might have found an ally in Spotify. In a statement made to Recode’s Peter Kafka, Spotify basically announced that they supported Epic’s decision in “taking a stand” against Apple’s alleged “unfair practices”.

According to Spotify, “We applaud Epic Games’ decision to take a stand against Apple and shed further light on Apple’s abuse of its dominant position. Apple’s unfair practices have disadvantaged competitors and deprived consumers for far too long. The stakes for consumers and app developers large and small couldn’t be higher and ensuring that the iOS platform operates competitively and fairly is an urgent task with far-reaching implications.”

Spotify has in the past expressed their dissatisfaction with the App Store and the cut that Apple takes from developers for in-app purchases, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise that they are standing with Epic on this matter. It is still too early to tell how all of this will play out, but in the meantime if you do not already own Fortnite on your iOS device, it looks like you’ll have to wait until this mess is settled before you’ll be able to download the game.
