Samsung Might Team Up With ARM, AMD For ‘Killer’ Android Chipsets

When it comes to mobile chipsets, Qualcomm is undoubtedly king. This isn’t to say that they are necessarily the best, but they do have a massive chunk of the chipset market. Samsung is producing chipsets of their own, although benchmarks have shown in the past that the company’s Exynos chipsets simply aren’t up to scratch compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series.

However, that could change soon because according to a report from Business Korea, it seems that Samsung could be looking to take things up a notch by partnering with the likes of ARM and AMD. For those unfamiliar, ARM is the company that developed the architecture that many companies like Qualcomm, Samsung, Apple, and Huawei use for their own chipsets.

AMD has largely kept to developing processors for computers, and while Intel still holds a lion’s share in the market, the company’s more recent processors have started to gain more ground. Partnering with the likes of Samsung and ARM could also allow AMD a way to elbow in on the mobile market, a market that Intel themselves have tried to find a place in, only to have failed.

We’re not sure what kind of chipset this partnership could produce or if it will be good enough to challenge the likes of Qualcomm, so if true, it will be an interesting development to watch.

Google Wants To Make It Easier To Develop Apps For ChromeOS

If there is a reason why Google’s ChromeOS platform isn’t quite as mainstream compared to Windows or macOS, the limited number of apps could be cited as a possible reason why. After all, a platform is only as good as the features it can offer its users. While there’s nothing wrong with ChromeOS, having more apps available could help make it a more attractive alternative to Windows or macOS.

Google is hoping to encourage this by launching a new site called ChromeOS.dev in which they are hoping to basically create a space where new and budding developers, as well as seasoned ones, can find all the resources that they might need in order to develop and create more Android apps for Chromebook devices.

According to a Google spokesperson, the site is meant to “help developers maximize their capabilities on the platform through technical resources/tutorials, product announcements, code samples and more”. Some of the new tools that Google is offering includes a full Android emulator for ChromeOS that will make it easier for developers to test their apps as well as deploy them without the need for additional hardware or by connecting external devices.

Google had previously tried to expand on the functionality of ChromeOS by making Android apps compatible with the platform, so hopefully this new website will make it even easier for new developers to try creating apps for it.

TikTok Found To Have Collected Data On Android Users

The argument that the US government is using in their bid to ban TikTok is that they claim that the app collects data on US citizens, which they believe poses a risk to national security. It seems that whatever excuses TikTok is making to defend itself might be moot, especially with a recent discovery.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it appears that towards the end of 2019, TikTok had actually been collecting data on Android users in the form of the user’s MAC addresses. Unlike cookies that can be easily deleted, MAC addresses are unique identifiers that are used especially in digital advertising to identify devices.

Apparently the app had been exploiting a widely-known Android security flaw which according to AppCensus co-founder Joel Reardon, who documented the exploit, is surprising that it is still exploitable and not closed by Google. The report goes on to claim that TikTok had apparently stockpiled the MAC addresses it collected for at least 15 months.

Google has since stated that they are investigating these findings, while a TikTok spokesperson claims that the app has since been updated where it no longer collects MAC addresses of its users, although we have to wonder if it is too little too late as the damage has already been done.
