As promised, Elon Musk held a conference today detailing Neuralink, an implantable device that would, according to Musk, solve certain problems related to brain and spine function. As an implant — and unlike many prototypes of similar concepts we’ve seen over the years — Neuralink will be entirely implanted within the recipient’s body, hiding it away from the world. TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is currently racing against the clock where they need to find a buyer for TikTok’s US operations by the 15th of September or risk getting banned. Microsoft is currently the favorite to acquire the company, but with all deals, there is always a chance that it might fail and fall through.
So much so that according to a report from Reuters, ByteDance is not taking any chances and is reportedly drafting up a contingency plan for if that happens and the app does get banned. The contingency plan comes in the form of a memo where ByteDance is asking TikTok engineers to draw up plans on how to shut down the app in the US if a ban does go into effect.
They are also asking that TikTok’s US employees and vendors to be compensated in the event of a shutdown, and for now, it seems that a hiring freeze has already been put into effect due to the uncertainty regarding the future of the company’s operations in the US. Obviously ByteDance would love to keep TikTok up and running, but it would be prudent to have a backup plan in case that fails.
A deal to acquire TikTok would also need to be approved by both the US and Chinese governments, so there are a lot of moving parts which could potentially result in a deal falling through.

There are plenty of markets around the world that might not have a population that’s willing to shell out $1,000 for a smartphone. This is why there are companies that purely make cheap Android phones to sell to the masses. Obviously there are compromises when you make a cheap phone, such as using less premium materials or using lower-end hardware.
Unfortunately, it also seems that in some cases, you might end up compromising on security as well. According to a report from BuzzFeed News, it seems that there are cheap Chinese Android smartphones being sold in regions such as Africa where it has been discovered that these phones actually come preloaded with malware that will steal your money.
According to one customer who spoke to BuzzFeed, after he bought the phone in question, he started to realize that he was getting a ton of popup ads that interrupted phone calls and chats, and he would wake up to find his prepaid data being used up and receiving messages about paying for subscriptions that he had never subscribed to.
Further investigation by Secure-D found that the malware actually came preinstalled, meaning that it was not the fault of the user as it came directly from the company themselves. It is unclear if this was done intentionally or if the handset manufacturer’s computers were already infected with the malware that they then unknowingly passed down to their customers.
So the next time you are thinking about picking up a cheap smartphone, you might want to think about this.

It looks like things between Apple and Epic have gotten worse as Apple has since officially terminated Epic’s developer account. What this means is that if you have downloaded any of Epic’s games in the past but have removed them from your iPhone or iPad, then you would be out of luck as you will now no longer be able to redownload them.
In a statement made by Apple, “We are disappointed that we have had to terminate the Epic Games account on the App Store. We have worked with the team at Epic Games for many years on their launches and releases. The court recommended that Epic comply with the App Store guidelines while their case moves forward, guidelines they’ve followed for the past decade until they created this situation.”
They add, “Epic has refused. Instead they repeatedly submit Fortnite updates designed to violate the guidelines of the App Store. This is not fair to all other developers on the App Store and is putting customers in the middle of their fight. We hope that we can work together again in the future, but unfortunately that is not possible today.”
Apple had previously stated that they are more than happy to allow Fortnite back in the App Store if Epic were to simply comply with the rules, but it seems that Epic is adamant about standing their ground.
