Microsoft Shuts Down Cortana For iOS And Android

Just like many other tech companies, Microsoft wanted in on the digital assistant market and launched Cortana several years ago. Suffice to say that unlike other digital assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa, Cortana has not gained the same level of traction or use, despite them having launched it on platforms like iOS and Android.

This is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that Microsoft has since announced that they will be shutting down the Cortana apps on both iOS and Android. According to Microsoft, “As we make this shift toward a transformational AI-powered assistant experience in Microsoft 365, we need to adjust our focus areas of innovation and development to give our customers assistance where they need it most. As a result, we are making changes to some U.S. consumer-centric features and functionalities with lower usage.”

This doesn’t mean that Microsoft is done with Cortana or that they are killing it off entirely. Instead Cortana will continue to live on within iOS and Android, but it will live on by being integrated within Microsoft’s 365 apps, so if you really have to use Cortana, you’ll still be able to access it within these apps.

Support for third-party Cortana skills will be deprecated on the 7th of September, while support for the main app will come to an end in early 2021.

Microsoft Could Be TikTok’s New Owner

The US government had previously announced that they might be considering banning TikTok. This is because TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is from China and due to the ongoing tensions between both countries, it could spell trouble for TikTok. Now it seems that things could be escalating, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The report alleges that based on what their sources have told them, apparently US President Donald Trump could somehow force ByteDance to sell off its US TikTok operations. But who will buy the company? According to a tweet by Fox Business Network’s Charles Gasparino, he claims that apparently Microsoft is in talks to potentially acquire the company.

TikTok has been defending itself claiming that despite its parent company being ByteDance, they are a US-based company. The US government has alleged that TikTok has become a platform of misleading speech, and could also be used to spy on the US by using the data it has gleaned from its users.

Whether or not those are legitimate concerns is another story, but the fact is that TikTok seems to be caught in the crossfire between the US and China. Whether or not TikTok will eventually be sold to Microsoft remains to be seen, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

17-Year Old Arrested Over Twitter Hacks

A couple of weeks ago, several high profile Twitter accounts were compromised in which they were taken over and then used to post a bitcoin scam. Given that these were very public profiles which included the likes of Apple, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and so on, it managed to gain quite a bit of traction with some Twitter users falling for it.

It was suggested that this could have been an internal job where a Twitter employee could have given the hacker(s) access to internal Twitter tools, which allowed these accounts to be quickly and easily accessed. That being said, it looks like things are finally wrapping up as a 17-year old teen from Tampa, Florida, has since been arrested and has also been accused of masterminding the whole attack.

In a statement made to WFLA, State Attorney Andrew Warren said, “I want to congratulate our federal law enforcement partners – the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, the FBI, the IRS, and the Secret Service – as well as the Florida Department of Law enforcement. They worked quickly to investigate and identify the perpetrator of a sophisticated and extensive fraud.”

Twitter has also since reassured users that despite these accounts having been taken over that no passwords were compromised as a result, although it seems that the direct message inbox of at least 36 accounts were also accessed during the attack.

It’s not an overstatement to say that Hannibal, Bryan Fuller’s nouveau gothic drama take on the Hannibal Lecter mythos, made Mads Mikkelsen’s career in Hollywood.
