One of the upsides of using a mirrorless camera over a DSLR is that generally speaking, mirrorless cameras are smaller and lighter which makes them easier to carry around. Sony’s A7 series of mirrorless cameras are relatively compact, but the company does make even more compact models.
This creates a conundrum for photographers who want the power of the A7 series, but want a smaller body. Sony has since introduced a solution to that problem in the form of the newly-announced Sony A7c. This is a full-frame mirrorless camera that has been stuffed into a compact body similar to that of Sony’s A6000 series.
Sony has created this camera with vloggers and videographers who might want to capture high quality video footage in a smaller frame. It weighs in at 509 grams, making it over 100 grams lighter than the A7 III, and marginally heavier than the A6600. It will feature the use of the same sensor of the A7 III, but will also sport a fully-articulating screen that would be useful for vloggers.
It is capable of shooting at 10 fps, an ISO range of 100 to 51,2000, support for USB-C, phase-detection AF with 693 phase detection points, and more. The camera is priced starting at $1,800 body-only which makes it $200 cheaper than the A7 III. Pre-orders of the camera should be going live soon and the camera is expected to begin shipping out late October.

When it was announced that TikTok had to seek a US buyer or face potentially being banned in the US, Microsoft also announced that they were in talks to acquire the company. What was interesting is that Oracle, typically seen as a tech company aimed more at enterprise users, threw their hat into the ring as well.
Now according to a report from The Wall Street Journal (paywall), it looks like Oracle might have won the bid, but not in the way you think. The publication has revealed that Oracle has apparently been chosen to be TikTok’s “trusted tech partner”. What this means is that while Oracle will not be acquiring TikTok outright, they will be managing the company’s US operations.
This means that instead of relying on ByteDance, which is a Chinese company, TikTok’s operations will now go through Oracle’s own cloud technology based in the US. This is interesting because not too long ago, it was reported that TikTok was in talks that could maybe allow them to avoid selling themselves outright.
This was expected to come in the form of a restructuring that would allay any concerns regarding national security, and it looks like this could be it. In the meantime, Microsoft had also recently confirmed that they would no longer be pursuing the acquisition of TikTok.

Given the popularity of TikTok, it didn’t come as a surprise to learn that many other tech firms were racing to create something similar. Instagram launched Reels and now it looks like YouTube has also decided to wade into the market with their own answer called YouTube Shorts.
YouTube’s interest in a TikTok clone was revealed earlier this year, and now it looks like it has been officially launched. However, it should be noted that the company has launched Shorts in beta and that it will only be available in India for now. This is an early version so expect some changes ahead of its global launch.
According to YouTube, “Over the next few days in India, we’re launching an early beta of Shorts with a handful of new creation tools to test this out. This is an early version of the product, but we’re releasing it now to bring you — our global community of users, creators and artists — on our journey with us as we build and improve Shorts.”
Shorts will allow users to create clips of up to 15 seconds in length with features like multi-segment cameras, choose from a library of songs to accompany their videos, speed controls, and more. Essentially it is almost like a TikTok clone that YouTube is probably hoping will attract users who might be concerned about the fate of TikTok in the US.

TikTok was practically an overnight sensation just like FaceApp and, like the face-morphing app, it got dragged into a privacy and security scandal. Unlike FaceApp, however, TikTok’s problems grew to a national level in the US and its demise in the country was all but ensured. While its fate still likes in the hands of Oracle and the US government, … Continue reading
