Don’t Install iOS 14 If You Want To Keep Fortnite

As the legal battle between Apple and Epic continues, it seems that those of you who still have Fortnite installed on their iPhones or iPads might want to stay away from the iOS 14 update. This is according to a tweet by the Fortnite Status account who claims that updating to iOS 14 could result in the app being uninstalled.

The tweet claims that if users were to update to iOS 14, they might see a message that asks them to temporarily remove apps ahead of the update, and doing so would uninstall Fortnite and players will not be able to get it back. This is because in case you haven’t heard, Apple has removed Fortnite from the App Store, and users will not be able to redownload it again once it’s been uninstalled.

Instead, the tweet is suggesting that users should manually uninstall or offload unused apps before installing the update. Note that this seems to only apply to iOS devices that do not have enough storage for the update to begin with, which is why iOS might prompt them to uninstall apps before updating.

Personally I did not encounter this issue during the update to iOS 14, but it’s worth taking note of anyway. In the meantime, we should also point out that even if you have Fortnite installed, the removal of the game also means that you will no longer be able to receive future updates and you will also no longer be able to play the game with non-iOS gamers.

A Bunch Of Companies Banded Together To Fight Against Apple’s App Store

While there are millions of apps in Apple’s App Store, suggesting that many are flocking to Apple’s distribution platform, it was never always a smooth sailing experience. So much so that it seems that a bunch of companies that Apple might have “wronged” in the past have banded together to form what they are calling the Coalition for App Fairness.

This includes companies such as Epic, Spotify, and Basecamp, the developers behind the Hey email app, and all of whom have had issues with Apple at some point in time. These companies are now banding together to either force app store providers, such as Apple, to change their policies to make them more “fair”, or to force regulation.

Some of the key issues at hand that the coalition is hoping to address is how companies like Apple are taking a 30% commission from sales of apps or in-app purchases. They are also upset that there are no alternative means of distributing apps to iOS devices other than the App Store, which in turn forces them to comply with Apple’s rules and terms.

Some might argue that Apple’s tight control over the App Store has provided some degree of quality assurance for end-users, where for the most part, they know that apps downloaded from the App Store can be trusted to do what it says it does. On the other hand, others are saying that the rules are too restrictive and to a certain extent, anti-competitive.

We’re not sure how big of an impact this coalition will have on Apple and the app market in general, but it is clear that more than a handful of developers have reached their tipping point and are unhappy with how Apple is handling things.

Finland Deploys COVID-19 Sniffer Dogs At The Airport

We’ve all seen how dogs are deployed at checkpoints along the border or at airports to help sniff out drugs and other illegal substances that people should not be bringing into a country, but could sniffer dogs also be used to sniff out diseases in people, like the coronavirus? Apparently so, or that’s what Finnish researchers believe.

It seems that researchers from the country have high hopes of the effectiveness of sniffer dogs at detecting the coronavirus, so much so that they have deployed four of them at the Helsinki airport where based on preliminary tests, the dogs were able to sniff out the virus in people with “nearly 100%” accuracy, even if the person has not developed any symptoms.

When a dog thinks that a person has the virus, it will then either start to yelp, paw at the ground, or lie down, after which the person is then given a PCR test to help verify the dog’s suspicions. At the moment it is unclear what it is that dogs can smell that might give them an indication that a person has the coronavirus.

It has been speculated that it could be in the sweat, where the odor might differ from a person without the virus. The idea of using dogs isn’t new and back in July, we heard that dogs in Spain were also being similarly trained.
