Whether or not the LG Wing actually makes practical sense is a different question and doesn’t really take away the fact that this odd contraption is not something many would have seen coming ever. But more than just the eccentricity … Continue reading

It would seem that Instagram had a particularly nasty bug on their hands when cybersecurity researchers at Check Point Security discovered that this bug, when exploited, would have allowed a hacker to take over the victim’s phone. Yup, the entire phone, not just their Instagram account.
Thankfully though, Instagram has since patched the vulnerability which means that if you’re running the latest version of Instagram, you should be safe. However, the good news is that this attack would have been a bit hard to pull off. This is because the hacker would need to send the victim an image that is loaded with malicious code.
The victim would then need to open up their Instagram account and upload that photo. This means that there are several steps in this process that need to be accomplished for the hack to work. The idea is that apps like Instagram request user permissions to certain features of the phone, and by exploiting this bug, the code in the image could then piggyback off the permissions to wreak havoc.
In a statement made to Business Insider, Check Point head of cyber research Yaniv Balmas said, “People need to take the time to curate each permission an application has on your device. This ‘application is asking for permission’ message may seem like a burden, and it’s easy to just click ‘Yes’ and forget about it. But in practice this is one of the strongest lines of defense everyone has against mobile cyber-attacks.”
Instagram has also noted that to date, there are no reports or instances in which the hack was successfully exploited.

Headsets for virtual reality setups tend to be bulky because of the displays that they put inside of them. However, it seems that Apple might have an idea for a VR/AR headset that could in theory be more compact as the company is toying with a slightly different idea on how to allow users to see the images or videos in the headset.
Patently Apple has come across a patent filed by Apple in which it suggests that the company is exploring different ways of delivering video content through such a wearable. Based on the patent, it seems to indicate that Apple is thinking about using mini projectors built into the headset which can then beam images directly into the wearer’s pupil.
In addition to being a potential way to reduce the footprint of the headset, using this technology could also dynamically affect the way the person views the images as it is scanned to the wearer’s retinas, thus opening it up to better focusing. It could also help reduce or eliminate the convergence-accommodation conflict which can be found in normal VR systems.
A popular rumor we’ve been hearing is that Apple is apparently developing its own pair of smart glasses. We have no idea how that will take form or when it will be released, so it’s hard to say if this patent is merely Apple exploring an idea, or if it could be a hint of what we might be able to expect.

A popular rumor is suggesting that Apple’s iPhone 12 event could take place in October. As we are approaching the end of September and there is still no official word from Apple just yet, it’s safe to assume that October seems like the most likely candidate. Now it looks like those rumors have been “confirmed”.
According to MacRumors, they have managed to get their hands on what is apparently an internal video presentation by the CEO of British carrier British Telecom. According to the company’s CEO Marc Allera, “We are just days away from Apple’s next major launch, a 5G iPhone, which will be a huge boost for 5G. Teams in all parts of Consumer have been preparing all year to win this launch, and be Europe’s number one partner for Apple.”
The video also apparently seems to feature an appearance by Apple’s services chief, Eddy Cue, who praised EE (one of the carriers under British Telecom) for being the first carrier to offer smartphone plans bundled with Apple services like Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and more. The appearance by Cue does seem to lend some credibility to those claims.
Why “days away” might not necessarily be accurate, the iPhone 12’s launch does seem to be close at hand so check back with us in the coming weeks where hopefully we’ll have more details to share.
