Verizon Pixel 4a 5G Ultra Wideband support will cost you

Last year’s new hotness is this year’s normal as 5G support becomes pretty much standard in many new phones. It’s no secret, however, that this new technology doesn’t come cheap and is often blamed for the rise in smartphone prices this year. Most 5G phones, however, probably have nothing over Verizon’s touted Ultra Wideband mmWave 5G network, which unsurprisingly also … Continue reading

Surface Duo teardown magnifies flaws and strengths

The Microsoft Surface Duo is probably one of the prettiest phones we’ve seen this year but it may have also become one of the most disappointing. Beyond the 2019 specs in a 2020 device, the software experience has also been less than gratifying thanks to the accumulation of small but annoying bugs. The teardown and repair narrative is even worse … Continue reading

Google Assistant Can Now Stay On Hold For You While You Do Other Stuff

Sometimes when you try to get in touch with a company’s customer service, depending on the volume of calls and complexity of your question, you might need to be put on hold. This is fine, but sometimes it can be a bit of a wait in which you can’t really do anything else except to wait, but not anymore.

If you have an Android device, Google has recently updated its Phone app where it seems that it will now be more integrated with Google Assistant who will stay on the line for you. What this means is that users who are put on hold will now be able to get Google Assistant to take their place while they go and do something else on their phone.

When the other person ends the hold, Google Assistant will then prompt you with sound, vibrations, and an on-screen notification to let you know that the other person is back. According to Google, the new Hold for Me feature is powered by the company’s Duplex AI system, which they claim is smarter about these sorts of things.

They claim that it will be able to differentiate between the different systems that companies might use for their customer service platform, and can recognize the difference between a prerecorded message that’s thanking you for staying on the line, and also hold music. It sounds pretty cool, but unfortunately for now it is only available as an early preview for Google’s recently announced Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G models.

Google Just Launched Its New Nest Audio Smart Speaker

Earlier this year, we had heard rumors that Google was planning a new Nest speaker. Given that Google had been slowly transitioning some of its products to the Nest brand, and with the Nest Hub Max, it makes sense that they would have a new Nest speaker that would replace the old Google Home.

For those who are looking for a new smart speaker, then you might be pleased to learn that Google has since officially announced the Nest Audio. What’s interesting about this device is that it seems to be a middle between the old Google Home and Home Max speaker, where according to Google, the Nest Audio will be 75% louder than the Google Home, and will also offer 50% stronger bass.

This means that if you wanted a smart speaker that could also double as a regular speaker with amazing audio quality, this could be it. The Nest Audio will also come with some of the features found on the Nest Mini, such as on-device processing. This means that Google Assistant will work faster given that it won’t need to connect to the cloud to process your requests.

Google is also introducing what they’re calling Media EQ that helps the speaker automatically tune itself to whatever you’re listening to, whether it be music, podcasts, audiobooks, and more. There is also ambient IQ that can adjust the volume based on background noise in your home. The new Nest Audio is priced at $99.99 and will be available for purchase on the 5th of October.

While the hardware by itself may be commendable, especially for power-efficiency, Microsoft once again oversold the software story. Not only was the initial Windows experience slow and disappointing, the number of popular Windows software you could run was … Continue reading
