Fitbit Devices May Soon Be Able To Detect Snoring

Our wearables have become a lot more capable these days and many of them have health-related features like sleep tracking built into them. However, with Fitbit devices, it seems that the company is looking to introduce snoring and noise detection, at least that’s what an APK teardown by 9to5Google has uncovered.

According to the APK teardown, they have discovered references made to an upcoming feature that can detect snoring and other noises. This is done through the device’s microphone in which according to Fitbit, “We look for snore-specific noises. When our algorithm detects an event that’s louder than the baseline noise level, it performs a calculation to decide if it’s snoring or something else. If the noise level in your room is louder than the snoring, this feature may not be able to pick up the snoring.”

At the moment, Fitbit devices can measure and track your sleep through things like your heart rate and movement, but adding snoring and noise detection could help paint a better picture. So why is this important? This is because depending on how frequent you snore, it can be a sign of health issues such as obstructive sleep apnea that can have a negative effect on your health, like blood pressure, for example.

So being able to detect snoring could help paint a more complete picture so that if you are feeling unwell, you could bring this data to your doctor where further tests can be done. The feature isn’t live yet but given that it was in the APK, perhaps it will be launching soon.

Sony Wants To Change The Way We Play Our Instruments

If you’ve ever played the guitar, you might be familiar with the whammy bar. For those who aren’t familiar, it’s basically a bar that sits on the bridge of the guitar that when pressed down or pulled up, will cause the guitar’s sounds to change and create a vibrating-like effect that guitarists use for texture and to enhance their solos.

It seems that Sony wants to take this concept but apply it to all kinds of instruments, and this will come in the form of a gadget called Motion Sonic. This is a wearable that you wear on your wrist that will allow musicians to warp the sound of their instruments through a variety of motions and gestures.

In the demo above, it shows how a DJ can add effects like delay to their mixes just by moving their hands about in certain ways. There are even built-in LEDs so that you can add a bit of spice to your performance if you want. It is wireless and oddly enough despite it being made by Sony, seems to be exclusive to iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad.

Sony has currently launched the Motion Sonic on Indiegogo where they’re trying to raise funds to make it a reality, so if you’re interested, you can head on over to its Indiegogo page and pledge your support where a pledge of ~$218 (early bird pricing) will nab you the device upon successful funding and production.

AirPods Pro With Fitness Tracking Expected In 2022

At the moment, Apple’s main device with all the health related features and sensors would be the Apple Watch, but come 2022, that could change. A report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Debby Wu has revealed that come 2022, Apple will be launching a new set of AirPods Pros with fitness tracking capabilities.

Apple has not updated its AirPods Pro ever since it launched, so a new model in 2022 sounds about right. However, the report claims that Apple apparently planned to launch it this year, but for whatever reason they have been pushed back. The report also goes on to state that the design will be similar to the Beats Studio Buds, meaning that it could do away with the stem entirely and give it a smaller profile.

Not much is known about the new model and what kind of fitness tracking capabilities we are looking at. However, the idea of using headphones to track fitness is not unheard of. There are some earphones and headphones out there that come with health features like heart rate tracking and also motion tracking so that you can log things like your runs.

Putting health features into the AirPods Pro actually sounds like a good idea. The AirPods Pro is currently priced at $249 so for those who need basic health tracking, it could be a cheaper alternative to the Apple Watch which is priced starting at $399.

Analyst Believes Apple Watch AssistiveTouch Could Be Used To Control The Apple Glasses

There have been rumors that claim that Apple could be working on smart glasses. These glasses have been rumored to debut in the next few years, but analyst Neil Cybart seems to think that we might already be looking at Apple laying some of the foundations for it, such as the Apple Watch’s AssistiveTouch feature.

For those unfamiliar, AssistiveTouch was announced recently and is designed to be an accessibility feature that lets people interact with the Apple Watch through gestures like clenching your fist. However, Cybart believes that AssistiveTouch could be one of the ways that Apple could use to allow users to control the Apple Glasses.

Cybart drew parallels from a Facebook presentation a few months ago where they revealed how they are researching using a smartwatch as an input method for AR glasses, and how a few months later, Apple announced AssisitiveTouch. Of course, all of this is just speculation for now and might not necessarily be true, but it does sound plausible.

Giving users a way to control their smart glasses without having to reach for it and to touch it makes a lot of sense. We would have assumed that smartphones would be used as a controller, but for those with a smartwatch, why not? In any case, we’re probably a few years from it being a reality, if at all, so don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Apple’s M1 iPad Pro Is Capping Apps At 5GB Of RAM

Apple’s brand new iPad Pro sounds like a beast on paper. It is powered by the M1 chipset used in last year’s MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro computers, and it also comes with support for up to 16GB of RAM, as much as a laptop. However, it seems that even with 16GB of RAM, developers are still facing limitations.

In a post on the Procreate forums, the developer of Artstudio Pro revealed that the iPad Pro will cap developers at using up to 5GB of RAM, meaning that even if you have an iPad Pro with 16GB of RAM, you won’t be able to find an app that can take advantage of all that memory.

According to the developer, “There is a big problem with M1 iPad Pro. After making stress test and other tests on new M1 iPad Pro with 16GB or RAM, it turned out that app can use ONLY 5GB or RAM! If we allocate more, app crashes. It is only 0.5GB more that in old iPads with 6GB of RAM! I suppose it isn’t better on iPad with 8GB.”

We’re not sure why Apple is limiting apps to just 5GB of RAM. Perhaps they don’t want apps that are too resource intensive which could limit its audience. Imagine an app that requires 10GB of RAM and you have an older iPad, you’d be out of luck. That being said, the 16GB of RAM isn’t “wasted” as it means that apps can stay open in the background longer so that users won’t have to wait so long for it to reload when they switch back and forth.

HomePod And Apple TV Combo Reportedly In Early Development

At Apple’s Spring Loaded event in April, the company announced a new Apple TV. Sure, it had improvements under the hood and there was also a brand new Siri remote control, but otherwise it wasn’t a particularly significant or groundbreaking update to the Apple TV lineup, but there could be a reason why.

A report from Bloomberg has revealed that Apple could be working on a more significant upgrade. This upgrade could come in the form of a new device that would combine Apple’s HomePod and Apple TV together. This means that in addition to being an Apple TV, users could also use it like a HomePod to play music and more importantly, also use it to control their smart home devices.

However, before you get too excited, the report claims that this device is still in early development which means that it might not be launching anytime soon. What’s interesting is that this isn’t the first time Bloomberg has heard that Apple could be working on multiple iterations of the HomePod.

For example, we heard that Apple could have a smart display HomePod device. There was also mention of a HomePod with a robotic arm that could be used to hold an iPad. In any case, it might be a while before we see any of these iterations hit the market, but which of these devices would you be most interested in seeing?

Jony Ive Was Involved In The Design Of The 24-inch iMac

In 2019, Jony Ive, the long-time famed Apple designer that helped give the company’s products a certain unique look, left the company. However, it seems that despite leaving Apple about two years ago, Ive is still very much working with the company because according to a report from WIRED, Ive was involved in the design of the 24-inch iMac.

This little nugget of information was revealed during the publication’s review of the computer. However, it is unclear if Ive’s involvement was after he left the company and Apple had hired him through his new company, or if his involvement was before he left. As the publication suggests, hardware design can take a while so it is possible that he was working on it ahead of his departure.

This is actually believable because back in 2017 during an interview, Ive revealed that it took Apple about five years to develop the iPhone X. This meant that the phone was in development since at least 2012, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the 24-inch iMac’s design kicked off a few years ago while Ive was still employed at Apple.

The 24-inch iMac is the first major redesign of the desktop computer in many years and it is expected to be the start of many changes to come. Apple is also said to be working on a redesigned Mac mini and MacBook Pro, so don’t be surprised if Ive also had a hand in those changes as well.

Twitter Working On Facebook-Like Reactions For Tweets

A while ago, Facebook introduced reactions. These reactions allowed users to express themselves on posts without actually writing anything, so for example you could use the laughing expression for a post you find funny, a heart/love reaction, an angry reaction, and so on.

Now it looks like Twitter could be doing the same. This is according to researcher Jane Manchun Wong who discovered that Twitter is working on a reaction-like system for tweets. Right now it seems that the development of the feature is still in the early stages as it appears that Twitter hasn’t created all the necessary icons yet, but the concept is there.

In its current form, Twitter seems to be testing out five different reactions – likes, cheers, hmm, sad, and haha. We’re not sure if there are more to come or if this is it, but it does give us an idea of what we might be able to expect. Reactions are actually a pretty good system because it can give us an idea on how most people might view a post.

It also allows users to share their feelings and opinions without necessarily having to write it down, which is useful if you’d rather not get into online debates and arguments. That being said, there is no word on when this feature will be rolled out to users, but we’ll keep an eye out for it.
