Good News, The Portal Movie Is Still Alive And Well

We’d like to think that video games made into movies or TV series have definitely come a long way from their earlier and more terrible days. A good example would be the Castlevania series on Netflix which was very well-received, which is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise that movie studios are looking to video games for inspiration.

For fans of Valve’s Portal series, you’ll be pleased to learn that the Portal movie is still very much alive and well. The idea for a movie based around Portal was floated by producer JJ Abrams about eight years ago, but given that we haven’t really heard much about the movie since, you wouldn’t be alone if you thought that it was quietly cancelled or shelved.

However, during the press day for the home release of the Super 8 4K Blu-ray, Abrams confirmed that the movie is still alive and that a script is being written. “We actually do have a script that’s being written for the Portal movie now at [Warner Bros.]. We’re really excited about the take and the pitch, so it feels like that thing’s finally on the rails.”

Unfortunately, not much else is known about the movie like who will be directing, who’s actually writing the script, and who will be acting, but assuming things continue to progress, we should have those details in the not-so-distant future.

You Can Now Buy An AirTag Holder For Your Pet Collars

Apple was pretty clear when they said that the AirTag was not designed to track children or pets, but at the end of the day, the AirTag is really just a tool and it’s up to us how we want to use it. If you think that it has the potential to be a great way to track your pets, then you’ll be pleased to learn that ElevationLab has announced an AirTag holder that can fit on pet collars.

Dubbed the TagVault: Pet, this is essentially the TagVault except that it can now be used with collars that you can use to place on your pet. The TagVault itself is designed to be waterproof, so if you own a dog that loves jumping into water and swimming, you don’t have to worry about it getting damaged as the AirTag will be enclosed within it and sealed.

It also seems to have a relatively small footprint so your pet will be able to wear the collar and not really notice the AirTag there. Also, ElevationLab has designed it to work with a variety of collars and harnesses up to 5mm thick, which means that it should work with the majority of collars out there save for doubled up leather.

If you’re keen on ElevationLab’s TagVault: Pet, it is priced at $20 for a single unit, $35 for two units, and $65 for a four pack, and it can be ordered via the company’s website.

USB-C Upgrade Will Let It Deliver Up To 240W Of Power

If there is a reason why we don’t see all devices and computers rely on USB-C for power, it is because the current standard of USB-C tops out at 100W. This is usually more than enough to power things like smartphones and tablets and some laptops, but for more power-hungry gadgets, not so much.

However, that will change soon because the USB Implementers Forum, the group that develops the technology, has unveiled the version 2.1 update to the USB-C specification. In this new update, it will increase the power output up to 240W. This means that more powerful devices like gaming laptops, docking stations, printers, and more can take advantage of USB-C for power.

This is no doubt good news because it means that we have to deal with less cable variants which can be troublesome. It could also help reduce electronic waste because if you have a USB-C cable at home, you can just use that instead of having to buy a separate one. To help differentiate the new USB-C cables from the older models, manufacturers will have to include specific icons on them.

This is similar to how USB-A cables were differentiated last time between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, where the latter had a blue inner lining. We’re not sure when we will start seeing this new USB-C standard implemented, but we can’t wait for that future to arrive.

Apple’s M1 Chip Already Has An Unfixable Vulnerability

Security flaws and vulnerabilities are all part and parcel of tech. You would be hard pressed to find something that is completely free of it. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) for Apple, it seems that the company’s brand new M1 chipset which debuted last year already has a vulnerability that cannot be fixed.

This vulnerability was discovered by developer Hector Martin and we say it cannot be fixed because similar to the Spectre flaw that plagued Intel’s processors, this vulnerability is on a hardware level which means that unless Apple were to recall and replace every M1 device out there, there’s nothing they can do to fix it.

This vulnerability, should it be exploited, would allow apps to covertly exchange data with each other, meaning that it could take place without the OS knowing. However, Martin does note that while this is a vulnerability, it’s one we shouldn’t be worried about. This is because at least at the moment, there doesn’t seem to be a nefarious use to this vulnerability.

Now we say that it might be a good thing for Apple that this vulnerability was discovered because it means that they can fix it. This is versus the company creating multiple generations of its Apple Silicon chipset and then finding out the problem 5-6 years later. We’re not sure if this will be fixed in time for the M1X/M2, so we’ll have to wait and see.
