Zoom Can Now Take Advantage Of The iPad’s Center Stage Feature

When Apple announced the new iPad Pro, one of the features of the tablet is a feature called Center Stage. This is where the front-facing camera on the iPad can “track” the user as they move around in the frame, ensuring that they are constantly being placed in the middle. Apple later revealed that Center Stage will be made available to third-party apps.

For those of you who use Zoom frequently for work or school or just for social reasons, then you might be interested to learn that Zoom will be taking advantage of the new feature. According to Zoom, this feature can be turned on or off so if you don’t really like the tracking feature then you’re free to disable it anytime you want.

Zoom notes that your settings will be remembered for future meetings meaning that you don’t have to worry about enabling or disabling it for every meeting. For those unfamiliar with how it works, the camera isn’t actually tracking or moving around per se. Instead, it relies on a wide shot that pans from one end to another to give the illusion that it’s tracking you.

This means that in some instances it won’t actually be able to track you if you move too far out of frame, but it should be good enough for a bit of movement. The update to Zoom is already live so do check it out if you’re interested.

Instagram And Facebook Launch Feature To Hide Like Counts

Likes on a Facebook or Instagram post can be a useful metric to gauge roughly how many people might have seen it or interacted with it. However, some argue that chasing likes can be distracting and takes away from the original point of posting, although some might also argue that chasing likes is one of the main reasons why people post in the first place.

That being said, Instagram started testing out hiding the likes count a couple of years ago, and now it looks like the feature is official and will apply to both Instagram and Facebook. According to Facebook, the reason is that they want to give users more control over their accounts and hiding the likes counter is one of those ways.

“Starting today, we’re giving you the option to hide like counts on all posts in your feed. You’ll also have the option to hide like counts on your own posts, so others can’t see how many likes your posts get. This way, if you like, you can focus on the photos and videos being shared, instead of how many likes posts get.”

This is a feature that users can turn on or off themselves so if you still want to see the likes, you can keep doing it, but if you don’t, you can turn it off and turn it back on later if you want.

Pixel 6 Google Whitechapel processor leak sounds encouraging

The past two years may have been disappointing for fans and believers of Google’s Pixel phones. The Pixel 4 came with high-end specs but the Project Soli-based sonar features weren’t worth the costs and compromises that needed to be made to make room for it. Last year’s Pixel 5, on the other hand, was anything but premium and it almost … Continue reading

BlizzCon 2021 Has Been Cancelled

Last year due to the fact that the pandemic continued to rage on, Blizzard, like many other companies, decided to cancel its BlizzCon event. Instead, the company opted to host the event virtually which took place earlier this year as BlizzConline. If you were hoping to see them return to in-person events this year, you will be disappointed to learn that will not be happening.

Blizzard has announced that they have decided to cancel this year’s BlizzCon event as well. According to the company, “Building an in-person BlizzCon is an epic and complex affair that takes many months of preparation—not just for us, but also for the many talented production partners, esports pros, hosts, entertainers, artists, and other collaborators we team up with locally and globally to put all of the pieces together.”

They add, “The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November.” The good news is that BlizzConline will continue to live on and will take place in the early part of 2022.

It is a bit of a bummer but hopefully things will be better in 2022 and we will see the event come back, but having BlizzConline isn’t such a bad alternative either.

iOS App Store Flaw Lets Apps Refuse To Run Until You Give A 5-Star Rating

One of the ways to check if an app is legitimate and how good it is is to check the ratings and reviews. However, it seems that checking the ratings may no longer be a good way to gauge how good an app is. This is because there seems to be a flaw, at least with iOS apps, that allows developers to create apps that refuse to open until a 5-star rating has been given.

This was discovered by developer Kosta Eleftheriou, who in the past has been actively uncovering some of the flaws and issues with Apple’s App Store. In the video below, you can see that the app refuses to function until a 5-star rating has been given, and according to Eleftheriou, this is extremely easy for any developer to pull off, which means that it could have a negative impact on the trust people have placed on App Store reviews and ratings.

Of course, we imagine that most developers will probably not go down this route in order to maintain their reputation and also to prevent themselves from having their apps or accounts banned, but for scammers who are trying to get people to watch ads or click on links, they probably wouldn’t care too much about that.

We’re not sure if Apple is aware of this issue now that it has been made public, but hopefully they will now do something about it.
