Job Listing Hints At Apple’s Interest In Cryptocurrency

It is no secret that Apple has interest in fintech. The company does have systems like Apple Pay and not too long ago, they also launched the Apple Card. However, could the company be looking to explore cryptocurrency as well? According to a job listing, that seems to be something Apple could be looking into.

While the job listing doesn’t specifically mention cryptocurrency, it does mention what Apple calls “alternative payments”. The job description reads, “The Apple Wallets, Payments, and Commerce (WPC) team is seeking an experienced Business Development Manager to lead Alternative Payments Partnerships. We are looking for a proven professional in global alternative and emerging payment solutions.”

It also calls on the applicant to have, “5+ years experience working in or with alternative payment providers, such as digital wallets, BNPL, Fast Payments, cryptocurrency and etc.,” as well as having “deep knowledge” of alternative payments, understanding the complexities of fund flows, and so on.

That being said, it is interesting if this could be headed down the cryptocurrency path. This is because Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had stated back in 2019 that he was not a fan of the technology. He was quoted as saying, “I deeply believe that money must remain in the hands of states. I am not comfortable with the idea that a private group creates a competing currency.”

It is entirely possible he could have had a change of heart since then, but who knows?

Tidal Launches Apple Watch App With Offline Playback

The other day, Spotify updated its app for the Apple Watch where it would now support offline playback and downloads. It looks like Tidal doesn’t want to be left behind because the company has since released their own app for the Apple Watch that comes with similar functionality like offline playback.

This is useful because prior to this, users who wanted to listen to their music from their smartwatch would usually need to have it linked to their phones for internet connection. However, with support for offline playback, it can be used without your phone or when you’re in an area without internet connection.

This is most definitely not a new feature because Apple Music already supports it and Spotify too, so at the very least Tidal is playing catch up. It’s interesting because before this, Tidal was seen as being kind of separate from Apple Music and Spotify as the company chooses to focus more on higher quality audio streams.

However, recently Apple announced their own lossless audio streaming and without extra costs to subscribers, meaning that Tidal definitely needs to step their game up if they don’t want to be left behind. Spotify is also said to be preparing their own lossless streams but they have yet to officially announce it.

Amazon Has Acquired MGM For $8.45 Billion

It looks like all the other streaming services out there need to start paying attention and step up their game because Amazon has announced the acquisition of MGM. We heard rumors about Amazon’s interest in MGM last week, and it looks like the rumors have since been proven true as the deal is said to be worth $8.45 billion.

According to Mike Hopkins, Amazon’s head of Prime video and Amazon Studios, “The real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of IP in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM’s talented team. It’s very exciting and provides so many opportunities for high-quality storytelling.”

For those who are unfamiliar, MGM is the studio behind many popular movie franchises such as James Bond. If you’ve ever watched a movie, there is a good chance you would have come across MGM’s roaring lion logo. The deal isn’t closed yet as it is subject to the usual regulatory approvals, but assuming it all goes to plan, it could be a huge deal for Amazon.

Amazon isn’t alone in trying to secure more exclusive content for its own platform. Other companies like Apple and Netflix have also been trying to court famous actors and directors to create shows for their platforms in a bid to entice customers to subscribe.

Fitbit Introduces 2FA For Account Protection

Right now, a good majority of the online services we use still require the traditional username and password combination to log into our accounts, but many have since introduced an additional layer of security in the form of two-factor authentication (2FA) that helps protect the account in the event someone guesses your password.

However, for the longest time ever, Fitbit did not support the feature, at least until now. For Fitbit users who might have felt a bit uneasy at the lack of 2FA, you’ll be pleased to learn that a report from 9to5Google has revealed that the company has started to roll out the feature to its users for account protection.

Fitbit’s use of 2FA still relies on SMS, which we guess is fine, but you will need to provide them with a phone number that the SMS will be sent to. As 9to5Google points out, carrier spoofing can negate the positive effects of 2FA through SMS, but we suppose it is better than nothing, and maybe further down the road Fitbit could change it to something else.

If you don’t see the feature available for you yet, don’t worry as it should eventually be pushed out to all Fitbit users. More information on 2FA and how to enable it on your device can be found on Fitbit’s website.
