Google Drive security update might break links to shared files

Although initially thought of as just hard drives in the cloud, cloud storage quickly became a way for people to share files. Unlike physical storage, however, there’s a greater need for security with files stored and shared from the cloud. It is for that reason that Google is introducing an update to Google Drive that fundamentally changes the way file-sharing … Continue reading

Apple claims sideloading iPhone apps will harm the app market

As if Epic Games’ epic lawsuit against it weren’t enough, Apple could soon be facing the biggest threat to its iOS App Store since the app store came online. The US Congress is preparing to debate antitrust six bills, one of which will put the iPhone’s closed app ecosystem under greater scrutiny. Those policies could force Apple to open up … Continue reading

LG Velvet 2 Pro leaks show what would have been LG’s last hurrah

LG’s exit from the smartphone market evoked mixed reactions. On the one hand, it wasn’t exactly surprising given the company’s ailing mobile business, but, on the other hand, it was still a sad fate to befall one of the former giants of that industry. Despite its best efforts, LG wasn’t able to make its last phones a reality, including what … Continue reading

In-Display Touch ID Might Only Arrive In 2022’s iPhone

There is no denying the effectiveness of Apple’s Face ID system, but there is a certain convenience with Touch ID that makes it better to use in some situations. We have been hearing that Apple could be working on a solution, but if analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s latest report is accurate, we might have to wait until next year.

This is because according to Kuo, the in-display Touch ID system will only arrive in 2022’s models, and even then, not all the models in the lineup might have it. According to Kuo, Apple will launch four iPhone models in 2022 which will consist of two 6.1-inch models and two 6.7-inch models.

However, he says that for the lower-end 6.7-inch model, it might not come with certain features, one of which is in-display Touch ID which will help to keep costs down. His report also confirms that the iPhone mini series will be killed off starting next year, so it looks like the iPhone 13 mini could be the last of its kind.

That being said, we’re not sure why Apple is taking this long. Other handset makers have long introduced in-display fingerprint sensors in their phones, so we’re not sure what’s holding Apple back. Perhaps they might be looking to do something more with the tech than just use it for fingerprints, but either way, it seems that it probably won’t arrive this year.

Google Authenticator For iOS Now Supports Face ID/Touch ID

Apps like Google Authenticator help you generate 2FA codes that act as another layer of protection for your online accounts. This means that in addition to your password, you will get a one-time generated code that verifies who you say you are, so in the event that your password is stolen, hackers still can’t get into your account.

However, what if the hackers got their hands on your phone? If you use Google Authenticator, you might be pleased to learn that the latest update to the iOS app now includes support for both Face ID and Touch ID. This means that if you want, you can set it so that only after you’ve been authenticated on your phone either via facial or fingerprint recognition, only then will the 2FA codes be shown to you.

Users can also now set how long they want this protection to last. For example, they will have the choice of either requiring authentication every time you want the codes, or every 10 seconds, 1 minute, or 10 minutes. The idea is that if you’re going to need to use the app in multiple successions, not having to authenticate yourself each and every time could be a time-saver.

The latest version of Google Authenticator should already be live so if you haven’t done so, you should update it. Updating the app will bring it up to version 3.2.0 so if you already are running that version then you should be all caught up.

This Is What Samsung’s New Wear OS Smartwatch Could Look Like

Many are undoubtedly excited to see what Samsung has to unveil at MWC 2021 next week. This is because if you recall, at Google I/O 2021 last month, Google announced that they would be collaborating with Samsung to revamp its Wear OS platform, combining the best of both Wear OS and Tizen together for some super wearables platform.

That being said, if you were curious about the fruits of that partnership, the folks at GizNext have teamed up with leakster OnLeaks to create renders of what the alleged Samsung smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch Active 4, could look like, although we have to say that it is a bit disappointing since it doesn’t seem to have strayed too far from the design of the Galaxy Watch Actived 2.

The main difference, at least based on the renders, would be the lugs of the watch, but other than that, it doesn’t look too different. Whether or not this is good or bad thing depends on your personal preference, and we suppose the main thing to look out for would be the software of the smartwatch.

Like we said, many are excited because Google’s announcement at I/O 2021 left out a lot of details, so many are at the very least curious to see how big of a change we are talking about. Either way, hopefully we’ll have more details next week so check back with us then for more updates.
