The Beats Studio Buds Have Been Officially Announced

For the past few weeks, we have been hearing rumors about Apple’s new Beats earphones called the Beats Studio Buds. For those who were hoping that it might be announced at WWDC 2021, that was not the case, but it looks like Apple has finally unveiled it anyway.

At a glance, were it not for the Beats logo right in the middle of the carrying case, you might have easily mistaken it for the AirPods Pro, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. This is because the Beats Studio Pro does not feature the use of the stem in the design of the earbuds and is more compact, perfect if you’d rather not make it so obvious that you’re wearing earphones.

They do share some features with the AirPods Pro, like active noise cancellation. It also features IPX4 water and sweat resistance so you can use it at the gym and don’t have to worry about your sweat damaging it. It will last for up to 5 hours on a single charge, and up to 8 if you turn off noise cancellation.

The earbuds also come with 8.2mm drivers and will support hands-free commands like “Hey Siri”. Interestingly enough, they will also play nicely with Android devices and can take advantage of Android’s Fast Pair and Google’s Find My Device. The Beats Studio Buds are priced at $150 and is currently available for pre-order via Apple’s website.

Razer’s 130W GaN Charger Will Cost You $180

Not all chargers were built equally. When you look at chargers for laptops, phones, smartwatches, and so on, you might usually pay attention to the power it can output, which is fair because obviously a higher output usually means that your devices can charge faster, so that’s reasonable.

However, you might soon want to start paying attention to whether or not they are GaN chargers. This is because GaN chargers have the advantage of being smaller and more efficient, and if you are interested in this tech, Razer has actually unveiled a new 130W GaN charger at E3 2021.

The charger measures 3.2 x 7.7 x 6.2mm, making it small enough to fit inside of a pocket. However, don’t let its size fool you as it is capable of charging two USB-C devices at 100W, and another two USB-A devices at 18W each. It comes with foldable prongs and Razer has also bundled a bunch of international adapters so that you can use it while traveling overseas.

Unfortunately though, this charger does not come cheap. Razer is selling it at a whopping $180, making it considerably more expensive than some of the competition, but at the same time it does offer 130W of power, so that’s the trade-off.

Qualcomm Expresses Interest In Investing In ARM If NVIDIA Acquisition Fails

In 2020, NVIDIA announced that they would be acquiring ARM. However, it isn’t a done deal yet as it is still subject to approval by regulators, where a few months ago, the UK government has decided to block the deal. This means that there is a chance that the deal could ultimately fall through.

If that happens, it seems that Qualcomm is looking to step in. According to a report from The Telegraph, Qualcomm’s soon-to-be CEO Cristiano Amon told the publication that Qualcomm is open to the idea of investing in ARM. They wouldn’t be trying to acquire ARM like NVIDIA is doing, but rather if ARM retains its independence and becomes a publicly-traded company, Qualcomm could be keen on putting some money into it.

According to Amon, “If Arm has an independent future, I think you will find there is a lot of interest from a lot of the companies within the ecosystem, including Qualcomm, to invest in Arm. If it moves out of SoftBank and it goes into a process of becoming a publicly-traded company, [with] a consortium of companies that invest, including many of its customers, I think those are great possibilities.”

That being said, regulators aren’t alone in their hesitation of NVIDIA acquiring ARM. Other tech companies such as Microsoft and Google had previously expressed their concerns as to whether or not NVIDIA’s acquisition could lead to supply being limited or prices being raised.

Amazon’s Luna Game Streaming Service Will Be Open To Prime Members This Month

Back in 2020, Amazon announced their entrance into the game streaming market by launching its Luna service. Unfortunately, as the service hasn’t been fully launched yet, the only way you could get in on it was to get an invite, but the good news is that if you’re an Amazon Prime customer, that will change this month.

This is because Amazon has announced that for Prime Day, for a very limited time only, Prime members will be able to sign up for a Luna trial. This will be available on the 21st and 22nd of June and if you’re a Prime member, signing up on either of those days will get you a free 7-day trial to the service.

Once the trial ends, you will then have the option to keep subscribing to the service by paying $5.99 a month. Essentially what Amazon is doing is giving Prime customers a two-day window to get in on Luna, otherwise once that window closes, you’ll have to wait for an invite or wait until Amazon opens Luna up to everyone else.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, then head on over to Amazon’s Luna page during those two days and sign up for an account.

Apple Watch ‘Extreme Sports Model’ Might Launch In 2022

The Apple Watch is a fantastic tool when it comes to exercise monitoring and health tracking, but it’s not exactly a very durable device. This is because of the materials used which might be prone to scratches or even cracks, but that might change in 2022. This is according to a Bloomberg report which claims that an “extreme sports model” version could launch next year.

This isn’t the first time that Bloomberg has reported on such a device. The first time we heard about it was earlier this year in March. The new report claims that the device was supposed to be launched this year, but has since been pushed to 2022. This could be due to how Apple is said to be planning features like a body temperature sensor which might launch in 2022, so it is possible that maybe Apple delayed this particular version to coincide with the introduction of the new sensor.

It’s interesting that Apple would be creating an “extreme” variant of the Apple Watch. When the smartwatch was first launched, Apple had marketed it as a lifestyle and fashion product, where they tried to position the watch as being a luxury timepiece. However, over the years Apple has scaled back on its luxury efforts and instead focused more on the health features of the smartwatch.

It would be interesting to see a more rugged variant of the Apple Watch, but whether or not that will happen remains to be seen. In the meantime, the report also revealed some details about the Apple Watch Series 7, suggesting that apart from a potentially new design, upgraded processor and display, it might end up being just a minor refresh.

Global Chip Shortage Could Create New Problems: Fake Components

As some of you are aware right now, there is a global chip shortage. As a result, it might be harder to get the parts that a company needs to make a product, which means that it could be delayed. However, it seems that delayed products might not be the only problem we might face with the global chip shortage.

According to a report from ZDNet, a potential problem caused by the chip shortage could come in the form of fake components. The idea is that because some companies might be desperate to try and fill orders or face production lines shutting down, they might turn to other vendors for their components, and that in their haste and desperation, might miss something during the verifying process.

Speaking to ZDNet, Diganta Das, a researcher in counterfeit electronics at the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering said, “If next week, you need to get 5,000 parts or your line will shut down, you will be in a situation of distress purchase and you will put your guard down. You won’t keep to your rules of verifying the vendor or going through test processes. This is likely to become a big problem.”

While Das says that it might be too early to notice a surge in counterfeit components, he believes that could change in the next few months. That being said, it has been suggested that this probably wouldn’t affect larger tech companies who source directly from chip makers, but rather low-volume manufacturers who might have less established supply chains.

How To Check If My iPhone Is Still Under Warranty

As with the majority of tech companies out there, whenever you buy an iPhone, you’re given warranty coverage. This warranty is known as AppleCare and it is free and comes with all iPhones and lasts for a year. However, some of you might have forgotten when exactly you purchased your iPhone and wonder if it is still under warranty?

If you want to check whether or not your iPhone is still covered by AppleCare, then here are several ways that you can go about checking whether or not your iPhone is still under warranty.

Check iPhone Warranty On Your iPhone Itself

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Go to General > About
  3. Look for Limited Warranty and it will tell you when it expires
  4. You can tap on it to bring up more information and to see what is covered under this limited warranty status

Check iPhone Warranty Through Apple’s Website

  1. Go to Apple’s Check Coverage website
  2. Enter your device’s serial number which you can get by going to Settings > General > About
  3. Enter the captcha code and click Continue
  4. You should now see a screen like the one above that shows you when the warranty will expire and what’s currently covered by your warranty

If your iPhone is still under warranty, if there are issues with the phone you will be able to either get it repaired or replaced assuming it is eligible and covered.

+

AppleCare is the name of the basic warranty that Apple offers to all customers. It is free and usually lasts for at least a year. AppleCare+ is the extended warranty that you will have to pay for and it covers things like accidental damage.

Under AppleCare, things like manufacturing defects are covered. For example, if your power or volume buttons stop working a month after you got your iPhone, that is covered.

However, what’s not covered are user-caused issues, like if you dropped your phone and the screen cracks. In that instance, it would be covered under AppleCare+, although you will still need to pay a deductible.

+

Yes, AppleCare+ will cover lost or stolen iPhones, but there will be a deductible of $149, and this can only be used twice (presumably so that people don’t abuse the plan).

+

  • iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XS, XS Max, and X – $200 or $270 for loss and theft protection
  • iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 11, XR, and 8 Plus – $150 or $220 for loss and theft protection
  • iPhone 8 – $130 or $150 for loss and theft protection
  • iPhone SE – $80 or $150 for loss and theft protection
