Jeep spent $1.6bn on the future home of its new hybrid SUV – and invited me inside

Usually, seeing the underside of a new car on a launch event is a sign that something went terribly wrong. Even before I’d touched the wheel of the new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, though, I’d seen it stripped back to bare metal. The automaker knows that perceived quality is key to nudging the first three-row Grand Cherokee upmarket, and … Continue reading

IATA Travel Pass App Will Help You Prove That You’ve Been Vaccinated

As the world is slowly getting vaccinated, there is now the question of whether it would be safe to travel, and if people still need to quarantine upon arrival. The good news is that if you’ve been vaccinated, you will be able to show proof of it and might be able to skip the whole quarantine situation.

This is thanks to the upcoming launch of the IATA Travel Pass app that is expected to go live in the coming weeks. For those unfamiliar, the IATA is a trade association that represents almost all the airline companies around the world. By launching the Travel Pass app, they are hoping that they will be able to standardize how proof of vaccine is shown so that it doesn’t matter which country you go to, everyone will be able to recognize the app and its format.

The app will allow users to import test results from government recognized labs, so in addition to being able to show that you’ve already been vaccinated, you will also be able to show your recent COVID-19 test results. At the moment, the app is still in the testing phase with about 60,000 enrolled in its beta, but so far feedback has been largely positive and the organization is hoping to go live in a couple of weeks.

Teen Developer Recreates iOS 4 As A Standalone App

Way back in the day when the iPhone was first launched, it felt almost revolutionary, but taking a look back at the old UI, it’s kind of cringey to see how outdated it looks by today’s standards. However, we imagine that there are probably some who might be fans of the old skeuomorphic design.

One of those fans is teen developer Zane Kleinberg, who decided that he would try to recreate the look of iOS 4 and release it as a standalone app called OldOS. As to why he chose iOS 4 instead of older or newer versions of iOS, Kleinberg tells Cult of Mac that it is because iOS 4 was his first experience with “modern mobile technology” and thus holds a special place in his heart.

According to Kleinberg, “My first experience with any form of modern mobile technology was iOS 4. It’s difficult to articulate how special of a place this piece of software has in my heart. It is what first introduced me to a passion for app development [and] tech. I think we all just like to cling to a very select number of childhood memories, and so many of mine include this operating system.”

That being said, Kleinberg is almost certain that his app will not be approved for release by Apple, however for those who are interested in checking it out, it is available via TestFlight here.

Pirated Software Helped An Unknown Malware Infect 3.2 Million PCs

hackThere are many reasons not to download pirated software, with the most obvious being that it’s illegal and you’re essentially “stealing”. The second reason is that because you can’t always trust the source of pirated software, it could lead to bad situations like this, where recently a report from NordLocker revealed how an unknown malware flew under the radar for two years, infecting 3.2 million PCs in the process.

The malware, which is unnamed due to the fact that it wasn’t discovered until recently, is said to have managed to spread to millions of PCs thanks to it hiding inside of pirated software like video games like tools like Adobe’s Photoshop. As a result, this malware also stole an estimated 1.2 terabytes worth of personal information from the computers it infected, like files from the Desktop and Download folders, image files, Word files, text files, and more.

It also seems that the malware even managed to activate the victim’s website and take photos of them without their knowledge. NordLocker has since reported the malware and the existence of the database containing the information to US-CERT. The email addresses part of the database have also been uploaded to Have I Been Pwned, so if you’re wondering if your computer might have been one of those compromised, you can head on over to the website and check.
