Hackers Have Stolen Source Code For EA’s FIFA 21 And Frostbite Engine

You would assume that a company as big as EA would have invested a lot of money and resources into developing a system that would protect its IPs from being stolen. There’s a good chance that they might have, but at the same time, it seems that hackers have also come a long way in terms of skill and tools because a bunch of EA’s IPs have been stolen.

In the initial report from Motherboard, it appears that hackers have managed to break into EA’s systems and made off with 780GB worth of data belonging to the publisher. This includes source code for games such as FIFA 21 and the company’s proprietary Frostbite engine which is used to power a bunch of EA games like Battlefield.

In a statement made to Motherboard, an EA spokesperson said, “We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen. No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy.” The company says that they’ve also made improvements to security and do not expect that this will have an impact on their business.

Not too long ago, developer CD Projekt was also hacked and where source code for games like Cyberpunk 2077 were stolen. The hackers had demanded a ransom from the company, but it seems that CD Projekt refused as it later reported that Cyberpunk 2077’s source code had been auctioned off.

Nikon Could Launch A Retro-Inspired Mirrorless Camera Later This Month

When it comes to the design of mirrorless cameras, it seems that Fujifilm is one of the few camera companies that are still sticking with a somewhat retro-looking design, whereas others such as Sony have opted for a more modern look. However, it seems that Nikon could be interested in going down that retro path.

According to a report from Nikon Rumors, it seems that there is a chance that later this month, Nikon could announce a new retro-inspired mirrorless camera. This wouldn’t be the first time Nikon has launched such a camera. Some of you might recall that back in 2013 the company launched the Nikon Df full-frame camera, and apparently this new mirrorless camera will be inspired by that design.

Given that the Df is a DSLR, we suppose it is possible that this camera could end up being the mirrorless version of it. The report claims it will be an APS-C based mirrorless camera, and that it will feature a “very thin” body that does not feature a handgrip. This is an interesting design choice and we’re not sure how we feel about that. A handgrip makes a camera more ergonomic and easier to hold, but if thinness/lightness is what Nikon is going after, we suppose shaving off the handgrip could help with that.

Not much else is known about this rumored camera except that it is expected to be announced by the end of June, so take it with a grain of salt and wait and see if Nikon has anything to share in the coming weeks.

Microsoft Working With TV Makers To Bring The Xbox Experience To The Masses

Right now the problem with consoles is that it comes at an additional cost, meaning that for some, it’s going to be an “either-or” choice. This is fine, but at the same time it means that some consoles usually end up doing better than others. To help boost their market share in the console space, Microsoft has come up with a unique solution – integrating the Xbox experience into TVs itself.

Microsoft has announced that they are working with TV makers to help embed the Xbox experience into smart TVs. This means that no additional hardware is required from the user, save for a controller, and they’ll be able to play and enjoy Xbox games right away as long as they have an internet connection.

Microsoft won’t actually be integrating the Xbox hardware into the TV itself, but rather they are working to ensure that its Xbox Game Pass service is playable on these TVs. Microsoft had actually hinted at their plans back in 2020, but now it looks like it has been confirmed. There is no mention of which manufacturers will be on board, but it sounds like an excellent idea.

The company had previously confirmed that they have never made a profit when selling Xbox consoles. Instead, the company profits from the games and services it sells, so by eliminating the need for hardware, it could actually end up making the Xbox division more profitable. Of course, there are downsides to this, such as an always-on connection, but it could help drive more gamers towards the Xbox platform.

Battlefield 2042 Announced, Will Be Released On The 22nd Of October

If you’re a fan of EA’s Battlefield series, then you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has since officially announced the next title in the franchise called Battlefield 2042. The game is currently set for a release on the 22nd of October later this year and will be launching on PC as well as current-gen and previous-gen consoles.

This means that if you own the PS4 or Xbox One, don’t worry because you’ll get to play the game as well. However, what’s interesting about Battlefield 2042 is that EA seems to be doing away with some of the features that fans have come to know and expect from these types of games, including campaigns and battle royale mode, neither of which will feature in the game.

Instead, the company will be focusing on massive multiplayer games that consist of up to 128 players in each game, so in a way, it’s almost like a battle royale mode. The game will also come with features like dynamic events in maps, meaning that players can look forward to events that can change their strategy and gameplay, like sandstorms, tornadoes that are destructive, and more. There will also be wingsuits that players can use and leap off skyscrapers.

We expect that despite not having a campaign mode and battle royale mode, it should still prove to be a pretty popular game nonetheless, so mark the date down on your calendar if this is the game you’re looking forward to.

Apple To Crack Down On Email Tracking Pixels

One of the ways people track whether or not you’ve read an email that they’ve sent is by embedding a single near-invisible pixel in the email. What happens is that when the email is opened, the image loads and will notify the sender that you have read the email. While it can be useful, some might find it a bit invasive in terms of privacy.

However, with iOS 15 and macOS Monterey, Apple will be cracking down on the use of these pixels. This is through a new email privacy feature called Mail Privacy Protection that will help prevent these trackers from working and gathering data about you.

According to Apple’s description of the feature, “If you choose to turn it on, Mail Privacy Protection helps protect your privacy by preventing email senders, including Apple, from learning information about your Mail activity. When you receive an email in the Mail app, rather than downloading remote content when you open an email, Mail Privacy Protection downloads remote content in the background by default – regardless of how you do or don’t engage with the email. Apple does not learn any information about the content.”

Do note that Mail Privacy Protection will not be enabled by  default. Instead, users will have to turn it on manually, but they will be prompted and notified about the new feature when they upgrade to iOS 15 or macOS Monterey.

Apple Wants To Eliminate Passwords By Using Face ID And Touch ID

Many believe that passwords are an antiquated system that needs to go. This is because passwords can be guessed, especially when people choose to use weak passwords, or they can be leaked when hackers breach a system. However, to eliminate passwords entirely is a monumental task, and that’s something that Apple is hoping to build towards.

During one of the company’s developer sessions at WWDC 2021, they unveiled a new authentication technology based on iCloud Keychain. How it works is that when you set up an account on a website, you just need to pick your username like you normally would, and then your device will use either Face ID or Touch ID to verify it’s you, and that’s it.

All passkeys will be generated and stored on your device and then synchronized across all other devices linked to your Apple ID. Apple says that this tech is based on the existing WebAuthn technology, so it should be familiar to some developers already.

According to Garrett Davidson, an Apple authentication experience engineer, “Because it’s just a single tap to sign in, it’s simultaneously easier, faster and more secure than almost all common forms of authentication today.” That being said, the success of this feature hinges on developers adopting it, so while it might sound good on paper, if no one chooses to use it, it would be pretty useless.
