Google Kills Off Its Augmented Reality Measure App

Apple’s iOS platform has an app called Measure that uses augmented reality to help you measure the dimensions of objects or even the heights of people, but did you know that Google also has their own Measure app? The app has been around for a while but not many might be aware of its existence, which is a pity since it will now be killed off.

Google has confirmed that they will be killing off the Measure app and have also removed it from the Play Store. The good news is that if you were aware of the app and had downloaded it before or are still using it, you can keep using it without any issues, at least while it continues to work. Since Google won’t be updating or supporting it anymore, it’s hard to say if future versions of Android could result in the app breaking its functionality.

In a statement released to XDA Developers, a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We’re no longer able to support ongoing maintenance for the Measure app. Instead, we recommend trying one of the many alternatives available on the Play Store.” We’re not sure why Google has decided to kill off the app, but then again Google does do this from time to time so it’s not that surprising.

However, according to the comments, it seems that quite a number of people had issues with the app and claimed it wasn’t very accurate. Either way, if you’re after an AR-based measuring app, you’ll now have to look elsewhere.

Apple Might Have Confirmed The M1X Macs

Were you disappointed when at WWDC Apple did not announce new MacBook Pros like the rumors said they would? If you are disappointed, you’re not alone, but at the same time, it’s hard to be surprised as WWDC is usually software focused. Sure, Apple did announce the M1 chipsets last year at WWDC, but it felt like a one-off thing.

However, it seems that maybe Apple could have had plans to announce something at the event. This is according to a tweet by Max Balzer who shared a screenshot of Apple’s live WWDC YouTube stream in which Apple had tagged the “m1x mac”. The M1X, for those unfamiliar, is said to be the next version of the M1.

It’s an interesting naming choice because for Apple’s iOS devices that use the A-series chipsets, Apple usually goes from one number to the next, and the X designation sounds like it’s more of a minor upgrade as opposed to something more major. This is odd because we would have expected Apple would have created something a bit more powerful for the 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh.

We’re not sure why the tags were included but no announcement was made. It is entirely possible it was made as a typo, or maybe Apple just wanted to help reach as many users as possible who might have been searching for the M1X, either way, we might now have to wait until Q3 2021 or later to see the new MacBook Pros.

iOS 14.6 Will Let You Stream Lossless Audio From iPhone To HomePod

Back in May, Apple announced that they would be launching lossless audio for Apple Music. However, it seems that at that time, none of Apple’s devices would actually support lossless playback, although Apple did say that the HomePod would receive an update that would eventually support it.

The good news for HomePod owners is that it looks like that update is sort of here. If you own an iPhone and have updated it to iOS 14.6, you will be able to stream lossless audio from your iPhone to the HomePod. However, this isn’t quite the promised update we were hoping for, but that will come later.

Instead, this seems to be some kind of workaround where if you don’t mind streaming through your iPhone, this could be a good alternative until the update arrives. For those unfamiliar, the HomePod is similar to Sonos’ speakers where you can stream music directly through it instead of having to rely on a paired device like other regular Bluetooth speakers.

You will need to stream it over AirPlay and it needs to show the icon as “iPhone -> HomePod”, otherwise it will just stream in regular quality. It seems like a lot of hoops to jump through just for lossless audio, but it’s what you’ll have to deal with for now.
