‘Stray’ Is A Game That Simulates What It’s Like To Be A Cat

Video games allow us to simulate different people, objects, and more, but if you’ve always wondered what it might be like to simulate a cat, then you might be interested to learn that Annapurna Interactive’s Stray will be releasing in 2022 for both PC and PlayStation consoles, and there’s a new gameplay trailer that shows off what we can expect.

Sony actually showed off the cinematic trailer back in 2020, but this gameplay trailer will provide a more accurate representation of what the game could look like. The premise of the game is that you as the player play as a cat who has been separated from their family, and you will use your cat-like skills to navigate the environment, solve puzzles, and more.

Unlike other animal simulator games like Goat Simulator, which feels kind of silly (but in a good way), Stray seems to have a slightly more serious tone. The game offers an open world concept that lets players explore the beautifully-crafted environment. There are also drones and robots in the game that the player can use and interact with to advance their progress in the game.

In any case, it looks rather interesting and if you have a few minutes to spare, you can check out the gameplay trailer in the video above.

Researchers Find That Adding Human Genes To Crops Can Boost Yields By 50%

Image credit – Yu et al.

How do we grow enough food to feed the world? That’s a question that many have been asking, and it seems that the answer could be human genes. This is according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago, Peking University, and Guizhou University, where they found that adding human genes to crops could boost yields by as much as 50%.

This means that instead of just planting more crops, existing crops will be more efficient and could produce more, which could help deal with issues like poverty and food insecurity, according to the researchers.

The use of human genes does not mean we are making crops more “human”, but rather the researchers are using the human gene that produces the FTO enzyme to help crops grow better. The enzyme in humans erases certain markers that regulate the production of proteins associated with cellular growth, and it was found that it could achieve the same effect in crops, thus helping them grow better.

The result are crops that grew by an additional 50% in mass which also yielded 50% more rice. The roots of the crops also grew longer, they photosynthesized more efficiently, and was also found to be more resilient to drought.

According to University of Chicago Economics Nobelist Michael Kremer, “This is a very exciting technology and could potentially help address problems of poverty and food insecurity at a global scale—and could also potentially be useful in responding to climate change.”

The Playdate Console Is Now Available For Pre-Order

Back in 2019, Firewatch’s publisher Panic announced an interesting handheld console called the Playdate. It was a tiny console that looked like it might easily slip into your pocket, but what was interesting was the fact that it featured the use of a hand crank that you could use to play games with.

The console was originally pegged for a 2020 release, but it looks like it was delayed, but the good news is that if the Playdate caught your eye, you’ll be able to pre-order it right now. The console was initially priced at $149 but it seems that the company has since revised the pricing where it will now cost $179.

The company is estimating that pre-orders placed now will most likely end up shipping in 2022. For those who missed our earlier coverage, the Playdate is a small handheld console with a 2.7-inch display. Its creators have made a creative decision to go with the use of a monochrome LCD instead of color, which we think adds a certain retro charm to it.

As for its games, they are going with an interesting concept called “Seasons” in which gamers will get two brand new games every week for 12 weeks for a total of 24 games. There are also plans to release an SDK so that if you’re so inclined, you can go ahead and make games for the Playdate as well.

Turning Off And Turning On Your Phone Could Help Thwart Phone Hackers

Want to protect your phone from hackers? According to the NSA, one simple trick that will take you about a minute would be to simply turn your phone off and then back on again, essentially restarting your phone. This is based on a “Mobile Device Best Practices” guide that the agency released last year.

Some of you might be wondering how does rebooting a phone stop hackers in their tracks and thwart their attempts? While it’s not a panacea for all hacking attempts, the idea is that rebooting a phone helps you thwart attacks that rely on in-memory payloads. This is a technique that some attackers like to exploit and it relies on the fact that many of us do not reboot our phones.

This is because rebooting our phone can disrupt these types of attacks, but like we said, since not many people do that, this type of hacks can be exploited for long periods of time. Of course, this is just one of the many ways that the NSA is advising people on how they can protect their mobile devices, but it’s one that might be worth looking into.

After all, it only takes a minute or two to shut your phone down and to start it back up, and if that could potentially thwart these type of in-memory payload attacks, then why not? Some other advice that the NSA has given include disabling Bluetooth when not in use, avoiding connecting to public WiFi, disabling location services when not in need, and so on.

Bang & Olufsen’s Beoplay EQ Are A Pair Of Noise-Cancelling True Wireless Earbuds

Bang & Olufsen are no strangers when it comes to true wireless earbuds. The company has launched its own take on the wearable in the past, but as we’re starting to see more of these earbuds come with noise-cancelling features, it’s not surprising that the company has decided to play catchup.

This will come in the form of the Beoplay EQ, which are the company’s first true wireless earbuds to feature noise-cancelling technology. According to Bang & Olufsen SVP of Product Management Christoffer Poulsen, “When creating Beoplay EQ, we made a commitment to deliver on the expectations of our customers whether they are using their earphones for travel, business or pleasure. The ergonomic earphones have been designed for comfort and provide powerful and authentic sound, making them a must have for design and music lovers.”

The earbuds will feature the use of an ANC DSP chip and six microphones that will take in sound from the surroundings so that it can better adapt its noise-cancelling. The company is also claiming that the earbuds will offer a total of 20 hours of battery life and about 6.5 hours of use per charge with ANC enabled.

The earbuds are also sweat and water resistant so you can use it during your workout if you desire. As for pricing, given that these are a Bang & Olufsen product, they will not come cheap. The Beoplay EQ is priced at 399 EUR and is expected to go on sale globally on the 19th of August.

Sony PS5 Update Comes With M.2 SSD Support

Consoles like the Sony PS5 come with a fixed amount of storage. If you manage your games properly, there’s a chance this could be enough. However, if you want to add extra storage, then you might be interested to learn that Sony has recently issued a new beta for its PS5’s software that will add support for M.2 SSDs.

However, before you get too excited for the update that will eventually be released to the public, it seems that adding this SSD to your console is more than just a plug-and-play process. According to Sony, “Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format.”

Sony also notes that while PCIe Gen4 has read speeds of 5,500MB/s or faster, the company “cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console.” They also note that it might not be the same performance compared to using the console’s own internal storage.

In any case, those are some of the things you might need to take note of in case you do plan on adding an M.2 SSD in the future. For more details and to see what are the requirements, head on over to the PlayStation support page.

Corporate America Is Building Its Own Surveillance State. Will the FTC Stop It?

Americans are used to hearing about what a great country they live in—how lucky they are to have been born in, or to have immigrated to, the United States. “American exceptionalism”—a phrase, funnily enough, coined by Joseph Stalin—is an idea that, on the whole, is still embedded in the country’s collective identity.…
