Amazon Widget Adds Alexa To iOS Home Screens

One of the newer features of iOS 14 is the ability to add widgets to the Home screen. This is more useful than Apple’s previous implementation and if you’re looking to get more use out of it, you might be interested to learn that Amazon’s Alexa app has been updated where it now supports widgets.

What this means is that if you so desire, you could actually add Alexa to your Home screen via a widget. According to Amazon, “On iOS 14 or higher, you can now add the new Ask Alexa widget to your home screen and tap to talk to Alexa.” It should be noted that as far as digital assistants are concerned, Siri is the only one that you can summon regardless of what app you’re using.

While putting Alexa on your Home screen as a widget won’t let you summon it using the, “Hey Alexa” command, it will make it easier for you to tap on it and make requests to it. Given that different smart home devices work with different digital assistants, we imagine that you might own some that are Alexa-only, so having Alexa on your Home screen will make it easier for you to interact with it and control your smart home.

Apple is expected to improve on its widgets by adding support for more of it in iOS 15. The update doesn’t have a set release date yet but it will most likely be launching this fall.

Apple Maps In iOS 15 Will Warn Of Weather Conditions

Apple Maps was launched to a rocky start but over the years, Apple has made various improvements to it to make it a better mapping application. In fact, it seems that come iOS 15, Apple will be introducing weather conditions to Apple Maps, where it can help users make better decisions when it comes to choosing their routes.

As spotted by u/ChrisSDreiling on Reddit, it appears that one of the changes we can expect in Apple Maps in iOS 15 is the factoring in of weather conditions and warnings. As you can see in the screenshot, it shows the user alternate routes that they can take if they want to avoid potential flash floods.

Given that not everyone drives trucks or cars that wade through a flood, this is actually a very useful feature to have, as people in the comments have pointed out. Also, it helps people make a decision whether or not they want to go out or stay home and keep safe. It’s interesting that Apple did not mention this feature at WWDC 2021 when they unveiled iOS 15, but it’s pretty cool.

iOS 15 is currently scheduled for a release in the fall, possibly alongside the new iPhones, although we don’t have a specific release date yet.

OnePlus Might Have Quietly Upgraded The OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 9R

The OnePlus 8T was released last year while the OnePlus 9R was released earlier this year, but it seems that for whatever reason, OnePlus has decided to give both phones a very tiny upgrade. According to user reports, it seems that the RAM in the phones have been upgraded to be faster.

When both phones were launched, both of them used LPDDR4X RAM, but some buyers noticed that when they got their new units, they came with LPDDR5 RAM. It’s odd because OnePlus still officially lists either phone as having LPDDR4X RAM, plus the company hasn’t made any kind of announcement so it is a bit strange.

That being said, chances are that these changes probably won’t make a difference to users on a day-to-day basis. Sure, LPDDR5 is faster, but like we said, there is a good chance that most users probably can’t tell the difference anyway, but it’s still odd that OnePlus would give these phones an “upgrade” halfway through their life cycle.

In any case, it’s only a good thing for newer customers who are getting, technically, “better” hardware. OnePlus is not alone in making these kinds of changes. As XDA points out, companies like Samsung and Apple have used different components for the same smartphone models, whether it be storage or modems, so we guess it’s not entirely unheard of.
